Love him or hate him, there's no denying any of us would be using the things we use without him.

* Windows only exists as it does because of the Mac. It may have eventually been a GUI, I'm sure, but not what we all know.
* Android would only exist -- at best -- as a Blackberry clone. We know how GREAT those are for web stuff. :p
* MP3 players would still be crap and/or you'd be so happy to use those Sony-proprietary mini-discs.
* Computers would probably still look exceptionally boring and they'd be running Microsoft PointyClickyDraggy™ OS.

Karl Denninger doesn't like Steve Jobs

"This morning I needed to reach for the barf-bag when I flipped on the TV and scanned the headlines of the major papers. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, had stepped down last night, and you had to be Patrick of "Sponge Bob" fame not to know it.

You can give credit to him for being the "driving force" behind Apple becoming an international powerhouse, but let's temper our accolades for this man, shall we? After all, the facts are what they are:"

the future....

get ready for the new Performa 2012! and a new Color Laserwriter to boot!

sorry...flashback to my support days when Gil Amelio ran the show...

Extremely saddend by this, it was inevitable given his health, but to go out on such a high as far as apple, the company is concerned, even so, all that hardwork, and money, and all you really want is to live as long as you can, so much to see, just hope who ever takes over follows the tradition, but I bet there are some competitors rubbing there hands right now. :mad

All innovators have to walk against a gale-force wind of people who tell them they're crazy/misguided/selfish/deluded/failures/egotists/naive.

It takes a rare person to succeed against this. Steve succeeded.

Good Luck & A BIG THANK YOU!

Sorry to hear this news, but 'thank you' Steve for what you've given us with Apple, and to know that you'll still be active and Chairing 'the Team'.

Just remember the old saying ... 'An Apple a Day ...'

All good wishes from the UK, Steve

Peter-P

We will miss you Steve. If only you could to the presentations for the upcoming projects? You are the best no matter what others say.

I love how everyone is saying it's all cause of steve apple is where it is today. How about the hundred's of engineers or works that help him.. I'm sure there are people that threw there ideas into the ring and steve said" Yeah lets try that". People have to remember that it wasn't only steve running the company...

Dont worry fanbois there is Tim Cook now... to worship!
And i bet he will be very happy about this! hehe

Then maybe is was luck, when he came back, that apple became such a success, if it went down the drain the buck would stop at the top, so why Not get the recognition for when it becomes one the the biggest, cash rich companies in the world, surely we are not all rabbits, glaring in the head lights of apple.

Why does this forum, and all other stories around the world, make this sound like a eulogy? Just another CEO stepping aside so apple can move on. Sure, he is a great person who turned apple around. BUT, there are others at apple that made it happen. Jonathan Ives is one of them. Many others too. My hope is for steve to enjoy the rest of his life as long as he can. Job well done as far as i'm concerned. Time to pass the torch!

I'll agree with this, but you would be remiss if you did not also recognize that Steve Jobs was the visionary behind Apple's recent success. His job was to see the company and its path from the 50,000 foot level, and he was/is very good at that.

Even if Steve jobs were to cease all connection to Apple and for some reason none of the many talented people at Apple came up with the next big thing Tim Cook could still run the company on autopilot and profitably coast on revisions to current products for at least five to ten years.

Every company has talented engineers, not everyone have a Steve Jobs. Just look at Sony, a company Jobs once admired. With the demise of their visionary things soon went "bad". Many fear, rightfully so, that Apple could see the same thing happen to them.

Will they keep doing well? Of course (so is sony). Will they be leading the "revolution"? Without a new Jobs, i think not.

And eventually find themselves in Sonys shoes, which by all means are quite great - but still.

True. But you need a brillant/smart/innovator/visionary person who can control all this staff. Without any intelligent orchestration, these engineers could not have done the beautiful work they all did.

Do people remember the hundred of construction workers that built the Eiffel Tower? No. We only remember Gustave Eiffel. Do people remember the thousand of mechanics that built all the first Ford cars? No. We remember Henry Ford.

Apple is a Platform Company

Steve stepping out of the CEO although a "news event", the company will be just fine. Let's not forget that he will still be quite involved with the company, it's just that the day-to-day decisions will no longer be under his control

It's the stamp that Jobs has put on Apple, its culture, and how it implements its end-to-end strategy.

Jobs positioned Apple as a Platform Company and that platform strategy is now Apple's core and what is driving the company's growth. The platform is much larger than Jobs or another other person within the company.

All the best Steve!

Some of you disgust me

Some of the comments in here are disgusting and hateful. Jealousy, maybe? The guy is obviously not-so-great shape and might be moving on soon so show some respect.

I hope he goes on to live a long life and his health gets better, but if the guy is to die tomorrow, he left his mark, and he will be remembered forever. So tell me, what have YOU done? What will we remember you with after you die?
