very excited

Its finally on! There is a real sense of excitement going on...a new platform and serious competition from serious players (too bad Microsoft, your not one of them) its going to push the boundaries for true innovation. Apple is poised to bring it on big time, they have all the cards. Its a great time to be a geek.

Print Media: saved by Apple.

"Global warming, saved by Apple." "No more wars, world hunger or diseases, thanks to Apple." Do you have any rational sense in you?

Actually, print media refers to papers being published. If anything, this will only further hurt it. All Apple's doing is jumping on the wave (with a host of others) of electronic news and eBooks.

I'm quite curious to see how open this "digital book format" is going to go as far as distribution and promotion. Jobs mentioned ePub as the format but will anyone be able to put ePub docs on the iPad via iTunes?

The web and alternative press web news sites has done a very good job bypassing the bias that a lot of medias have out there to get alternative views out. Are all these meetings an attempt at putting the Jeanie back in the bottle or just a PR move to promote the distribution scheme for anyone to subscribe no matter how many paper mills are owned by the publishing house?
People have been using ePub for years and that is not changing. I’m using Calibre and Stanza and as an example the scare caused by about USB sharing being disabled (for now) is just unfounded noise. Not everyone can probably get in on iTunes distribution but on other apps, sure.

As for the second paragraph… I don’t have a clue what Jeanie you’re talking about .
I am more than willing to subscribe, I would like each page with images including advertising that I would get in the printed version.

I get the magazine for the advertising as well as for the content.

I'm willing to pay a few dollars a month for the excitement of reading advertising and content... yes I said that...just make it look like the printed media.
What can I say.. only in America ? Hell no for that last sentence :D.
Wait a minute, is this a post about rumors that Steve Jobs does his job?
Good point :).
The way these industries are struggling, many of them will be goners (i.e. out of business) if they don't do something. This may be the last lifeline to grab for some of them. Gannett (who owns Louisville's Courier-Journal) is seriously hemorrhaging right now, and has let go of legions of employees over the past few years just to stay in publication.

Precisely why I get my news on the 'Net; it's what's happening now. Perhaps jaw04005's suggestion of app cost + ad revenue may be an acceptable alternative to the Web, where Flash still rules.

But was he using an iPhone as his cell phone during his travel?

It isn’t news until someone has written an article about it. Some proper journalism is quite different from Twitter etc. “news” happening now.

I just hope they definitely do not just move they’re current content (either web or paper) in PDF-equivalent to apps and start charging for it.. that’s just asking for failure. I want some proper alternatives to magazine subscriptions with video, audio, text and less advertizing. “iMags” is the killer service I was and am still waiting for. Books too but not that much.

Lemme guess. The conversation centered on, "I hold in my hand your savior. All you must do is develop content in HTML5 (and stay away from flash) and the minions shall spew forth!"

LOL!!!! Brilliant as teh steve levitates.

this is going to give those publishers a shot in the arm like itunes did for the music industry.

I was already sold on the iPad even before it was released, but give me iPad versions of sfgate.com, orlandosentinel.com, Playgirl, GQ, and a couple of other sexy publications and I'm even happier!

EXACTLY like how iTunes "helped" the music industry (and by "helped", I mean crippled it and cut CD sales down to next to nothing).

But, traxx, might I suggest you use <sarcasm> </sarcsam> tags here, because some shameless fanboys here like to rewrite history in their delusional minds. lol

All these media outlets use Flash for more than video (slideshows, scrolling banners, etc.). So, I have to think someone asked about the lack of Flash making some of their site and content not accessible.

To which Steve must have said, "Yeah, you should stop using Flash. Moving on ..."

And you can bet that by the end of these meetings, they will be reworking their websites without the use of "flash"!

Flash has nothing to do with this. Native app with content distribution through iTunes and content being in ePub format. The ePub amended as already rumored for the iBooks. At no point has Flash even been in the picture. (Yeah sure, some of the content is replacing /re-doing web site content but it’s just a small part of it.)

Yeah... and after Apple sells it's billionth book and it's billionth magazine subscription, the publications are going to be pissing and moaning about how Apple is screwing them.

Suits. Go figure.

It will be interesting to see what Apple comes up with.

Currently I use Zinio. for magazines.

Zinio works good on the Mac and the iPhone. On the iPad it will really rock.

You can check it out for free -- the app and an trial magazine or two.

Zinio already rocks. So I'm sure Apple will bring something really nice to the table.

Wow, not that I was 'on the fence' or in any doubt about it, but that site most definitely sold me on the iPad.

1) It's very uncomfortable to read a magazine like that with my MBP on the couch. I'm way too far away from the screen and my neck is cricked downward. The L shape form really doesn't lend itself to healthy couch reading.
2) It's flash based - and its jerky on a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4G Ram! Add to that it's hard to read, clunky and static content has not been 're-created' for the medium. When Flash is running its sucking power like a Hadron Collider and the heat being generated from my battery may prematurely accelerate global warming
3) Zooming around crops content
4) It sounds weird but I do actually want to use my hands to read with and hold the magazine like a magazine or a book (like I would with an iPad)
5) My battery would hardly last a magazine under the ridiculous CPU load being generated.

What's really interesting is that I'm currently reading a 400 page book which weighs 2lb's, is 9.5 inches tall and 7.5 wide - the iPad is 1.5lb's and roughly the same dimensions. I think their iPad app could be worth checking out!...Roll on March.

My problem with magazines on the iPad is simply, how does digital distribution overcome the thing that's killed magazines in the first place? Specifically, by the time you assemble a magazine's worth of content, its already out of date. And if you're going to have live updates, then isn't this just a web site that you pay for by the unit?

A good article is better written...

Yeah, but, surferfromuk, I sure hope you're willing to stand the eye strain... which is a proven benefit of eInk.

by the sound of your text, i think you mean, 'it's a great time to be an apple fanboy'.

Ahhh, yes... innovation:

1366-by-768 capacitive screen, 1.3 megapixel camera located on the front of the device, and the presence of a USB port.

“We have managed to pack in more hardware profiles than the iPad without compromising on sleekness [of the JooJoo].” He was referring to the thickness of the JooJoo here, which measures between 0.2 inch and 0.7 inch—while sporting a larger screen.

But how long before the pages are just like web pages with pop ups and animated distractions. The thing I like about newspapers and magazines is the advertisements do not jump up and grab you covering over the article that you want to read. I would prefer to read something more static like a PDF.

So basically the New York Times is going to held the propaganda for the iTampon ?

Magasine service is a good news I wonder what form it will take and I hope Jobs won't try to screw us on the price or system.

+1 Yep, yep. Annoying when I go to a tech website and see a headline interesting to me, click the link and get hit with a full page ad and a countdown (15... 14... 13... 12 seconds) before I get to the article I want to read, or click (tap) here to go directly to it.

When I read a magazine, I may have the article on one page and perhaps a full-page ad on the other side. My eye will go to where it's drawn. Whether I look at the ad or totally ignore it, I'm guaranteed the ad will stay put.
