That solution should hopefully be not needed by the end of this year.

Things are getting better all the time! :)

OMG!

Is this longer than the "Mac Mini to be Discountinued" Thread?

GO, THREAD, GO!!!
LOL.

Ripping Blu-rays on Macs has been available for more than a year (Make MKV). You can then transcode those with Handbrake to a more friendly file size. You can also play movies directly off those discs with Make MKV and VLC.
If such a cavemanish approach were the obligatory procedure for watching BD content on the Windows platform, we all would be laughing our asses off and call it prehistoric...;)

I care because you can't safely stow a 40" plasma in the overhead compartment or underneath the seat in front of you during take off and landing

Anyone who says "Who watches Blu-Ray on a 15" screen" is missing the point.

True, although the use case here does beg a question: what airline has a seat pitch in coach that's generous enough to physically open a 15" laptop in the first place?

Yes, I know: the niche use cases of Elite Status that gets you maybe an exit row, or bulkhead. Or if you're doubly lucky and on an unpopular route, maybe an upgrade to first class.

You can always hack/unlock a DVD player that's region-locked. It works for most stand-alone DVD players, but every one has a different procedure. ;)

Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand aren't too bad.

The realization that BD authoring and playback is relatively effortless on a Mac

Playback, even by your own admission, is not effortless. It requires at least 2 packages and a convulted streaming scheme. It doesn't "just work".

Authoring ? You can't author proper BDs on Mac. Sure you can probably make some kind of image for a disk with HD movie that will be written to some kind of Blu-ray media, but I seriously doubt FCP supports all the required profiles and functions that Blu-ray offers, especially for the interactive parts of the standard which have a deep integration with Java.

3rd longest thread in MacRumours News history...

Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand aren't too bad.

The Cathay Pacific coach seats are pretty darn good.

Fixed seat back, so if the person in front reclines it makes no difference to your space - and a big, hulking UK style power outlet right above your tray table.

I prefer the Cathay b-class seats, but I don't feel like I'm being punished if I fly coach. (Talking to you, Qantas!)

...and to think that some of those people defending Jobs' BD vendetta say that "Apple tries for perfection" and "Microsoft stops at 'good enough'". ;)

Give customers a choice.

If koolaid drooling zombies have been hypnotized by Glorious Leader
that they don't need the latest optical technology and all it's great benefits, they don't have to get it.

For customers that want to watch full HD video in a few seconds, author HD content onto BD
and have the ability to write data to 25-50GB discs like $800 PCs can,
let them choose to get the BD option.

This is not rocket surgery. :D
It's treating your customers like adults.

Not surprised, paying a competitor for rights like that. Apple will just push their iTunes store for movies.

In all honesty it's the safest move, there's really no need for a blueray player other than movies. Software doesn't use the disc space.

I'm always weary plugging my devices into a Universal power jack, for some reason I think its going to make my devices pop.

I think its a phobia left over when most electronics didn't have dual-mode transformers.

Any chance your parents bought a 120v BD player - that might explain why it doubles as a toaster!

I bought a Sony TV in Switzerland - the label said "90-300v 40-100Hz". That's quite a range....

Well, it is better than nothing. Plus, there's a plug-in for Plex in the works that will allow disc access (but without menus). That ought to make it a little less cavemanish. ;)

When I put a BD disc into my player (Sony BDP-S550), it autoplays.

What isn't clear to you?

Oh, I thought you wanted the movie to autoplay like is possible with DVD, not whatever ads or other crap the studio has chosen to force you to watch.

hey cave man, obviously your os is hacked so this may be a silly question, but how are you achieving br playback?

No, I expect the *menu* to autoplay, just like when I insert a DVD or BD into my home player.

By the way, how can you bypass the FBI notice and go right to the movie with a stock DVD player? I'd like to know the trick.
