This. At cost-per-gigabyte, the only thing that might beat an optical disc is a hard drive (the old fashioned kind, NOT an SSD). Optical discs are also more reliable than flash drives. Flash drives have chips and firmware on them that can fail. Optical discs don't. Flash drives are not replacing optical drives anytime soon.

Even hard drives, it's fine if you're only comparing on a blank-to-blank media but add in the duplication costs to sell content on physical media and optical wins all the way against anything right now.

This thread needs to die out. The discussion taking place here has been repeated for the last 173 pages, and all people are doing is trying to prove the same points but with different information.

So Steve suggested blu-ray isn’t coming to the Mac. Big deal. Who cares? If it comes it comes, if it doesn’t it doesn’t.

I disagree. Bring this thread to 5000 posts! Come on! We can do it!

Of course, you do know the best way to let a thread die out is not to post to it right ? You just participated in keeping it alive. Good work.

Yeah, it must be really frustrating for people who have no interest in the issue to keep seeing it high up on the list of threads still. But maybe try ignoring it instead of adding to the problem for yourself.

Here's another repeated point: according to some people's definition of 'dead' (something that is thriving, growing... ) this thread is certainly dead already.

Anyway, I would argue that considering how long the thread has continued we have seen that even since the story was posted Blu-ray has gone on to become even more successful and make Jobs' position on the format more and more silly. Far from being 'dead', the issue is one which is very much alive.

That FlixOnStix seems to have a serious flaw.

The "fast" USB thumb drives write in the range of 10-15 MByte/sec, and the fastest are 20 to 30 (the 30 is the Corsair Flash Voyager GTR, which gets its write speed from being organized as a 4 volume RAID-0 stripe set - 64 GB $135 at Newegg).

That means that when you plug your thumbdrive into a FlixOnStix kiosk, it will take more than 15 minutes to download your BD-quality movi to your super-fast thumbdrive. If you have merely a fast thumbdrive, it will be 30-45 minutes.

Does anyone think that people will hang around the kiosk for half an hour to download a movie?

As far as the bump to the thread, maybe in 5 years....

I wish we could see how the second chart would depicts trends 2014 and on.

Oh please, you and I both know that even without my intervention this thread would continue wasting space on the 'recent'/'top' side bar.

The last post was today; you must be mad if you truly believe this thread would have ceased activity without my original post.

Anyway, since I've apparently opened Pandora's box, I will leave and let it fix itself by no longer posting.

If SJ is on the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association and sees BD as a "bag of hurt", why doesn't he resign?

So Steve suggested blu-ray isn’t coming to the Mac. Big deal. Who cares?

People who use Blu-ray in their work every day. Thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Not you, apparently.

I disagree. Bring this thread to 5000 posts! Come on! We can do it!

Depends on Mr. Jobs how long this thread goes on. Because it sure won't stop until he gives up.

What else did you expect from the naysaying geniuses on here? Logic?

Yep. Much to his eternal chagrin I am sure, his customers DO have voices. And opinions. And needs. And he can't fool all the people all the time with crappy resolution downloads.

Pah-lease. Steve Jobs is on the Blu-ray Disc Association's board of directors, I think he knows the inside scoop.

My plumber knows the inside scoop on my toilet. It doesn't mean I'd hire him to install a whole-house distiller. Just because one is privy to info doesn't mean one is intelligent enough to see the need for that info and to implement it.

If SJ is on the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association and sees BD as a "bag of hurt", why doesn't he resign?

Because he's loonier than Willie Wonka and surrounded by sycophants who humor him 24/7.

He likes BD when it makes him money. BD on Macs make him lose money though because it's competition for iTunes.

And sometimes people, even CEO's, have to do what is best for their companies and products in the long run, even if they lose a bit in the short run. Specifically, keep at least their top end computer line up with current technology, even if it were to cut a bit into their iTunes sales.

Perhaps a younger and wiser Steve Jobs from decades ago would have done the right thing by now. Then again, perhaps not, and that Steve Jobs never existed but was a BS creation of PR firms, flacks, and hacks, and all he ever was was a shortsighted fascist "appropriator" and regurgitator pretending to be a visionary and praying like hell that no one ever caught on.

Why are they on the list of supporting companies? They never have done anything for the tech obviously. Odd.

Depends on Mr. Jobs how long this thread goes on. Because it sure won't stop until he gives up.

He won't cause he feels he is being revolutionary. He (in his own mind) is doing the most important and revolutionary and magical things in existence. Can't wait for him to leave so everyone can see another wise person can do perhaps even better. Brands go a long way.

It is in amazing compressed to hell 720p, its the future, Apples 720p is >>>than 1080p with loseless audio. It says Apple on it that way you know its good.

Yes, I agree with you.

He's not, and Apple isn't. IPHONE was wrong.

Interesting. Because Apple certainly were on the Board of Directors of the BDA. Anyone know more about this? From what I can see, you can be elected to the board of directors and it costs $30,000 more (up from $20,000 as a 'contributor' where Apple are currently listed) so maybe it something to do with one of those facts. All very strange anyway.

Have a look at http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/mar/10blu-ray.html

Lovely quote there:

“Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple’s leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs.”

Still waiting....

with cell phones recording video in HD these days, no reason to buy an HD camcorder

don't know about everyone else but most of my videos are 3 minutes or less and i don't have time to make them into larger compilations. i'll email them or upload to facebook

I really hope your joking here. Filming 720p video with a poor phone lens does not constitute acceptable quality for home movies. Maybe when you want to film your mate falling off a skateboard, but not much more.

I didn't buy an £800 camcorder to stick things on YouTube...

For most average consumers an HD cell phone camera is plenty. I know it is for me. I take way more "home movies" and share them than I ever did before the iPhone 4 (and thanks to iMovie on the phone they're edited nicely). Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you.

If you're going to quote me, quote the entire part of my post.

I said "if it comes, it comes; if it doesn't, it doesn't." No way does that relate to the actual people who use blu-ray; what it does relate to is how people are continuing to bring this "will it come, will it not?" argument back. The last part of my post is meant to convey my opinion; who should care about this constant bickering around "it's coming! / it's not coming!"

If this article read "Steve Jobs says blu-ray not coming to Macs" or "Steve Jobs says blu-ray coming to Macs soon", then I wouldn't care since they're definite statements, but these articles just create more bickering.

At what point did Apple stop being cutting edge and start focussing on "average" consumers? The iPod has a lot to answer for I guess.

You might think your home movies look good, but if you can share your video over email or websites the quality simply isn't there.

Fortunately I have a blu ray burner, in my pc so I don't have to settle for second rate HD and can record and watch the video at the quality I paid for when I bought the camcorder.

Just a shame I can't do the same on my mac.

"...which they will only get on a Mac computer OVER MY DEAD BODY.

Want more? OK, NO MORE OPTICAL DRIVES EITHER!!"

Don't you love it when Steve Jobs 2005 gets in crazy arguments with nutty Steve Jobs 2011?

Perhaps the one generating the RDF isn't completely immune to the effects of the RDF - and there's a destructive feedback loop underway where the RDF is just building on itself....
