Ironically, "obsolete" media sometimes provides the highest quality. There is a big underground for ripping vinyl in 96kHz and 24-bit FLACs. And combined with modern click/pop removal, it is phenomenal sounding, way better than anything you can download on iTunes.

My biggest beef with vinyl rips has not been clicks and pops, but clearly audible groove distortion (from "hot" mastering) and thumps. I can always tell when I buy a CD that's supposedly off master tapes and they couldn't find them and cleaned up a record. I can also clearly hear those millisecond gaps where they chopped out a tick or pop too. I tried cleaning up my own vinyl with the best programs I could get and still was unsatisfied with the results. The only advantage I can see to vinyl rips is not damaging the vinyl anymore.

No doubt it's far better than any iTunes mp3 though.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you do sound like a bit of an enthusiast.

C.

And why shouldn't I be? What I see and hear there is better than almost any theater around, even the latest touted biggest screen which, to someone who has seen and remembers Cinerama, looked like a joke. When I bring clients over and show them my work, you don't think it results in greater sales?

I not only enjoy the latest technology, I need it for my business. Woe to Steve Jobs and you or anyone else for trying to tell me I don't, or that Apple can survive without it and without offering at least an option for the latest cutting edge technology.

Not happening.

:apple:

Are you saying you would show your work in BluRay?

If quality is that big a deal, why not show them the ProRes422 master?

C.

Because my clients are just as used to dealing with round plastic discs that go easily into consumer players as consumers.

Ease. And because no end user is going to see the ProRes422 master. And distributors, sellers, and resellers want to experience the end product.

And for the same reason no one ever got a record deal by hauling a record company executive into the best studio in the world to experience a live 48 track mixdown. Even though the results would have been technically superior and spectacular to the end result.

Fair enough.
Any particular reason you don't buy one of these?

I agree that Apple's main focus is like every other corporation and that is generating wealth --- Steve himself has said that downloads are great and everyone loves the quality so what is he afraid of? Give the consumer a choice and in the end you might sell a few more computers.

Your comment didn't make much sense. Apple has never been about creating "wealth" it's always been about creating the best products and changing the world in the process. Steve never would add "blu-ray" just to "sell" more Macs... what would be the point? Downloads are 100% the future, so why cheapen up the product for a few years just to appeal to a few laggards?

Apple has always had the burden of moving society forward, if you can't handle that mission, Microsoft would be glad to take your money.

And don't be completely absurd, the Mac remains the core of Apple's business, Steve has repeatedly said that. The Mac in 20 years will have 70% of the computer business it's just everyone is waiting for the old people to die off... So learn about how this industry was created, how it works, and who sets the direction.

Thanks. I think I'll get one. More money out of Steve Job's pocket, in this case, $7000- $12000 depending on the model I pick.

but Steve has never cared about money don't forget, so what is your point?

nobody cares about some tiny $12,000 sale, changing the world is far more important.

Why is adding Blu Ray 'cheapening'. People into Blu Ray are not laggards. They will get 4K discs while the downloaders are still at 2K. Then they will get 8K media while the downloaders are still behind.

Downloaders are the laggards.

I've got a different brand. Works just as well. When I feel like I need to jump through the hoops.

Look, we get that drives are available. That we can even burn discs. I have. TONS.

Problem is, it's not easy. And authoring is dodgy, and Apple needs to get in with software and correct what Encore can't.

Not to mention you can't PROOF the darned things in Mac OS. That's ridiculous.

And Apple's bottom line will pop, if it continues to rely on fads for the lowest common denominator.

I'd rather not see that happen. I'd rather see Apple provide cutting edge desktops LIKE IT USED TO. So it will have a valid foundation and a high-ticket FUNDED base to fall back on when the iFad bubble pops.

yawn, your customer base is living in the past, nobody uses CDs anymore, those died out over 7 years ago... you're stuck in the past, with an obsolete media format... just stream, download or torrent that info, it's much more flexible.

and what consumer still uses cd players? that's a complete laugh!

Of course people still buy a lot of CDs. It's better quality and cheaper than any legal downloads.

Oh yes, changing the world into a bunch of online zombies 24/7, who ignore e-mail because it's too hard to deal with it mobile and they'll "get to it later" which never comes. With a couple of hundred of thousands less people in the world because of texting auto accidents.

And more teen drug deals and sex hookup dates.

Yep, that's a valid goal and brave new world all right.

News flash: The man ONLY cares about money. Mobile does NOT make the world a better place; it makes it into a hell where the gov AND your boss AND your family have tabs on you 24/7 and OWN YOU.

How old are you? Eleven?

Furthermore, the round plastic discs I was talking about were Blu-ray. Pay attention!!

Where do you live so I can send an EMP your way and wipe out all your lovely data. :)

what? anyone still using a "whirling, spinning, mechanical wheel" is obviously stuck in the 1980's. Blu-ray failed because you can simply download this stuff for free, why would anyone want to drive to a store, pollute the air and buy a plastic disc with bits on it? ... when they can simply watch it via online? You aren't making ANY sense...

No, online speed is instant, even at 7Mbps... Sorry dude, but downloading has 100% replaced the need to buy "1's & 0's" in boxes.

You're out of touch with reality, everything is now downloadable, there is simply no need for optical discs going forward. That era is OVER.

I can see why you find that annoying, but I would always advise against testing media on the machine that created it.

Are there not alternatives to Encore?

C.

Not without running on the Windows side. Which is even more infuriating.
