It's times like these one realizes how much you respect Steve Jobs and all he has accomplished. An truly amazing man.

Watch those shares drop!

BBC News

The announcement was made on a public holiday in the US when there is no trading in company stocks and shares. However, Apple shares traded in Frankfurt are down 7% on the news.

shares were going to drop anyway, because they are inflated. I see so much speculation here. We have no idea what's going on. Give it a rest.

get well soon, mr jobs! we all know you're a fighter - keep at it!

on a slightly cynical side note, (but important for me, since some of my student financing is saved in apple stock) thank god the nasdaq is closed today!

I wish people could stop talking about the stock and be more concerned about the health of this husband and father the stock is the least of the issues.

the only reason that I mentioned the stock is to show that this wasn't a sudden thing and has most likely been planned for some time. I mean :apple: has planned for some time how to announce this so it would hurt their stocks the least. And I really hope that Steve Jobs is okay and will come back to Apple soon.

Let's face it folks. This is it for Steve. He will NOT come back. They are smart by announcing a 'medical leave of absence' as to not shake up the investors too much (but their stock will take a hit).

Isn't the market closed today? If we pretend for a second that he's just a CEO (not a human), this is serious news for lots of us sharesholders. I wish I could get out *now*, honestly, though I imagine Apple's strong enough to pick back up a bit in the next month.

From a crassly pure economic point of view, I'd see the price tank and then recover over the next month (thanks to Verizon, etc; Jobs isn't stupid about picking this time). But if Jobs tanks, the bottom falls out until Cook et al can prove their mettle, in which I have almost no real confidence.

You can't replace Jobs. His personality precludes another strong willed successor from serving with him. Ives isn't a CEO.

That said, for his own sake, I'll add that I hope Jobs gets better and stays away.

You're a short-sighted idiot. AAPL earnings are released tomorrow. VZW was announced last week. This has all been crafted and the stock won't take a hit. For the market, the reality of the earnings will outweigh the emotion of this announcement. The last time Jobs took a "leave" the iPad launched - he was barely back in time to be at the release event.

Everyone had AAPL in the grave in the mid 90s when they were barely $11 a share. If you still think the stock lacks resilience after its long AND short term performance over the past 15-16 years, you're a fool.

+1 :apple:

Get well soon, Steve.

A question to all:
Does this mean, we are going to get an iPhone 3Gs like product this year?

I don't mean to be acting bad as I know steve ain't well but apart from that without any selfish interest, I just want to know if steve is going to let Tim Cook do the honours.

His appearance reminds me of someone who is HIV+, but people that can afford the meds these days can live with it just fine. (see Magic Johnson) If I had to guess I'd think its related to complications stemming from the transplant.

I really hope he pulls through alright.

God doesn't exist, so I can't tell him to bless you Steve. But I wish you the very best of luck in defeating your health problems.

I wish people could stop talking about the stock and be more concerned about the health of this husband and father the stock is the least of the issues.

Wouldn't that be nice? But at the same time, I don't see many posting on these boards about 13 murders in 12 days in Prince George's county.

That is to say, stock is a big reason people like me follow rumors sites. Stock is a big reason Jobs announced his leave now (with Verizon sales to support the stock price).

He's a life, but he's also a CEO. I think it's fair game to talk about both.

Sorry to say, but I'll be selling all shares at open and going short. I remember what happened last time Steve left Apple. Oh well, it was a good run while it lasted.
