That's an entirely different issue though. The 'taller' iPhone that MacDawg was talking about actually changed the aspect ratio and would have existing iPhone apps with black borders on the top and bottom.

Changing the resolution to 1440x960 would be perfect as we'd get more PPI and a larger display, with developers only needing to provide higher resolution assets.

Making the screen taller just doesn't seem very...apple-y. The lack of elegance or a redesign to fit a larger screen just screams tacky. If there's a larger screen, it'll be wider too.

I can see the black borders being an issue, so really. The only thing i see them doing is keeping the aspect ratio and upping the resolution to keep a similar ppi. To do all this, i doubt we'll see the edge to edge screen all these people are clamoring for. Casemakers would be pissed

optimal was whatever steve had at hand to sell. That's not saying he didn't put effort in finding an optimal solution or that he wasn't good at that. But he touted every solution apple was selling as optimal, and that's quite different. forward to 2012 and the ipad mini is going to be boxed with sandpaper so people can file down their fingers to use it. ;)

rofl:)

Apple just isn't going to the same without someone who could so casually dismiss an idea, with such precision as to not to rule out what they already had in planning for the future.

7.0 inch that's ridiculous we'd have to include finger sandpaper
What about 7.8?
Apple doesn't comment on future products.

I hope they shock the world and come out with a 3.5" iPhone again. Muhaha, easy typing for another year.

I have my handy dandy Android Razr Maxx right now and the larger screen (4.3'') is absolutely, positively an improvement over the iPhones (3.5").

4" screens are the sweet spot IMO so long as the width remains relatively the same otherwise people with small hands would find it uncomfortable to carry.

The 3.5" worked... and worked well because it was like this cute, comfortable easy to carry phone. But after having a 4" screen for a few months now... it is more ideal. At least for me.

I don't think they'll do it either, in fact I know they won't as it'll break (perfect) compatibility with over 600,000 apps... just to make the screen a little bit bigger.

The next step up in resolution from 960x640 is 1440x960, anything else and they'll break compatibility.

It won't be 1440x960. Existing retina apps won't scale properly. A taller screen is more likely - that way Apple could run a (very minor) letterbox and maintain a pixel-perfect image with existing apps.

I think they will either maintain the existing resolution (and just reduce PPI) or use a taller screen.

Hang on, dear 3GS, hang on...

Ha, ha. I've stuck with my 3G through three new iPhone launches now… Ach, she canna take much more Captain!!

I have a feeling I'm going to buy this next one regardless… glass back, unsightly metallic stripe, whatever. But I'm quietly optimistic we will see something special with the next one.

I would say a bigger screen will automatically be a success if they manage to keep the current size of the phone, i.e. fit new screen into current form factor by only trimming down the bezel/borders.

Or

Make the phone slightly larger, but compensate by making it thinner. Then people would not get the feeling it's become a brick compared to the old iPhone.

Personally, I don't mind a slightly larger, but thinner.

Apple routinely works in a series of projects for future products for years before releasing.

You should expect several future products to have Steve's influence all over them.

if the DPI is the same then nothing breaks, you just end up with an unused part of the screen. What is at question is the amount of work needed to take advantage of the new size.

For example an App that uses a keyboard already has to deal with the keyboard taking different amounts of the screen height. Generally your view gets overlaid not pushed up. You just get told how much of the screen is to be obscured to make sure nothing import is under there. On a taller phone the keyboards provided by system would use all the screen, but obscure less of the legacy app view.

Sure Games would need a fair bit of work to take full advantage, but still the a black border* isn't going to break them.

*oops...border not broader

Oh I agree. I was never one to say it was optimal.

Optimal meant a lot of things. For one - at that time 3.5 was a pretty good size. And I am sure going larger would have serious financial considerations (the tech cost basis could have been much higher) not to mention battery life, and all that other good tech stuff.

"Optimal" changes with time. 3.5" was not only optimal in 2007, it was cutting edge. RIM CEOs said after the iPhone keynote, "that's impossible, there's no way Steve Jobs demoed a live phone. It would be impossible to power a screen that large with an internal battery."

But as we learn new things, tastes and preferences can change. 3.5" was certainly the sweet spot introducing this whole new class of phone, but as they've researched and learned new things, I'm sure their tastes have changed at Apple.

If it's a linear increase in size, chances are good that the keyboard will obscure the same amount of screen at 4"+ as it does 3.5". You'll have larger keys, but it'll remain relatively unchanged.

Everything else? I'm guessing the app icons will stay the same size, which means you'll have more space between the icons on the springboard, and things won't look quite so crammed together like it does on the current screens. UI elements, like back/forward buttons, menus buttons, button buttons etc? Much like the keyboard keys, I'd say they'll probably be made a little bigger, so they'll match the same screen percentage ratio as they do on the 4/4s. This way, they'll be just as easy to hit with your thumb or index finger. Any smaller, and it might start getting a little uncomfortable.

I thought he was busy working intimately on iTV and iCar not to mention fighting cancer and building a yacht. He definitely was a busy guy. I wonder if this means that iPhone 5 is going to use two year old tech though.

I get that lots of people want a 4-inch or larger screen, but personally I'd prefer they kept the screen size as it is - so I think they should offer a choice of screen size, the current one and the bigger one.

Of course if there is only one size of the new iPhone with a bigger screen they'll likely continue to offer the 4S, but maybe next year we'll see two sizes for new models, especially if we have two iPad sizes by then as well(?).

In other news... CEO of Apple was involved in planning the future of Apple.

any organization that want to survive for years would have to prepare for a long roadmap for each product line so there is no doubt if there are already planning into the new years product refresh.

and of course those planning will changes due to environment changes.

I love reading all the comments and hearing all the people talk about how 3.5 is the perfect size. Those will be the same people that say 4.0 is the perfect size once it is out. :D

Login problems, graphics card kext problems, sudden weird freezes on Lion makes me miss Steve more and more each day... :(

Lets hope MacBook Pros at WWDC will bring back Steve-level perfectionism to Apple.

'Intimately' huh? Sounds good to me.

That's why they leak such news - it's good and cheap marketing. Even in four years from now they will still be releasing new products of which they will claim that Steve Jobs was involved in their design.

We knew this. This is why all the 4S really got was Siri and why the third gen iPad 'only' received retina (IMO). Because Steve didn't need to be involved as much in those upgrade. We already knew the next gen iPhone and the iTV (or whatever moniker is currently being used) were his babies. :)

I also wouldn't be surprised if Tim has been at the helm of the MacBook range for a while before Steve's passing, and hope to see the fruits of both men's work this year.

I just hope we're not overhyping again and building up for a disappointment.

That's not true, there's no such thing as a 'retina app', they're all designed at 480x320 points. Any multiple of that will work fine. What's been said is that the 'retina artwork' might not scale well to 1.5x the resolution, but ultimately it should be fine for the most part.

The letter box display would give you a much too tall portrait mode and a much too short landscape mode, and on top of that it breaks the perfect compatibility with apps that every iPhone model has had thus far.

I didn't say it would break the apps, I said it would break (perfect) compatibility, and in that sense it does. Ultimately moving to a 1440x960 resolution would be perfect as everything would continue to work just fine.

Im sure it will be just as gorgeous as ever, but I'll be getting off the yearly phone habit if theres any increase in physical size.

Cant help feeling Samsung has pushed larger screens, mainly because they need a bonus feature in an attempt to be half as good.
