iPhone

Hello

About this "Gost" iPhone, I wonder it will be like any Apple product.

And why not like an iPod Nano? Black or White!!!

Hope see it soon

Maverick

I realize Apple is pushing its own iCal, Address Book, and Mail programs, which I think they should. However, this phone would truly be amazing if they added support for Exchange and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Many other phones do. I have my BlackBerry right now and will replace it in a heartbeat if Apple's iPhone gives me the same synchronization with our Exchange server as my BlackBerry does. I must have push email, my calendar, and my contacts at all times. I also use Google Maps for BlackBerry all the time, too. I imagine Google will port it for iPhone when it comes out. That's all I'd need to switch. Apple supports Office because it's the standard, so I hope they'll support Exchange as well.

1. Exchange support
2. Google Maps

That's all I need!

I believe this is a Ghost phone. I dont think Apple would have designed a phone themselves; not prudent instead of continually licensing iTunes & a mobile connection port to the iTunes Store. I'd really like to see a mini QuickTime media port in Symbian or even MS Smartphones.

> Just offering viewing media (audio/video) content along with MP3/AAC+ Fairplay playback ISNT enough to make a successful phone.

Just look at the real heavy weights in this market and their making phones that we really like in design & weight and can carry around.

RIM is coming out with an 8100 (SureType keyboard) that WILL play MP3's via expandable MicroSD slot under the battery (implementation location does suck), and with 1.3 MP camera with flash. and yes thats pure push email! and its very slim!

Now, I do hope that I'm wrong. I dont want it to be slim just for slims sake. wireless iCal sync either over GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/WiFi/1X depending on our choice of provider or network provider.

Apple takes all of their technology and finds new applications for it. This is perfect.

> You have a bar phone, a little bigger then a nano.
> No Scroll wheel
> A small keypad at the bottom, maybe.
> Long touch screen with the interface. You interact with your phones screen, no programed buttons, it changes for the feature you use:

>Nvidia Graphics, a decent intuitive interface and 3rd party capabilities.
>Think Airport Express connectivity through a wireless service with bluetooth/wireless modem.
>iChat connectivity, SKYPE, iLife connections.
>Dock Connector, Headphone Jack.
>Remember earbud microphone capabilities? Music playing, you get a call, you answer it via command, chat, hangup via command, and go back to music.
>iPhone Pro might be aluminum with a larger screen, PDA like.

Stop trying to fuse designs together, like scroll wheel with numbers on it, and start thinking about what technolgies Apple has, and hasn't implimented. MAybe the delay on the phone has delayed the iPod because they don't want to spoil the fun of a touch screen phone. You cant accidentally turn the phone on, youll need a finger. And the screen adjusts to what you are doing. Thats the most aweful experience with current cell designs, doing os many tasks with a number pad. It sucks, and I know Apple has an amazing solution and thats why Jobs is excited. Microsoft is making an mp3 player with solid buttons, and Apple is breaking into the 21st century without them.

Hopefully it will be a LOT more than a phone. Phones are boring. Phones are ubiquitous. Everybody offers them. What we need is a iPal, a phone size or small PDA size package that includes among other things phone capabilities but runs Mac software as is. What I want to see is:

iPal:
Palm sized Macintosh with touch screen covering the whole front surface
MacOS to run all but the most demanding software (not what???)
Slower than other Macs due to limits of size and battery
iTunes Music,
Videos,
Full web/email/etc
WiFi connected,
VOIP/Cell phone,
Camera 3MP or greater, 3x optical zoom or greater
Scanner (uses camera)
GPS
Real World Rugged - takes a licking and keeps on ticking

Just a phone, even with itunes, calendar, notes, photos like an iPod, would be very disappointing.

just hope this time it has nothing to do with motorola...

and for an ipod+iphone they need to get reaaaaaally better in "one more thing": batteries!

Has anyone seen this:

i know it's just an artists rendition, but...
i love this video, the zero 7 track and the movie clip are clever choices to show off this concept. thought that the full screen idea was a head of the rumors too, since this clip is fairly old. i don't know if i like the dual flip screens thought, seems that it would flop around when talking on it. and having the touch screen against your head/ear might not be so good either🙄

To iPhone or Not to iPhone

I think the iPhone should be unlocked, it's a way for apple to make sure that it stays how they want it to (they like it that way🙂 ), and that everyone who wants one can have one. I also think that they will bring out different versions, as they will want to reach both US and EU markets.
To make me buy one, it would either have to be reasonably priced on contract, OR have the ability to replace my G4 iPod 20GB, as i could then justify spending so much on a phone.
I somehow doubt it will be up to the standards of a G6 iPod (ie the next one, or whatever one is out if/when we get an iPhone), but probably the G5 (ie video/music), meaning they will not kill their iPod market. o yeah, it'd have to be flash memory, nokia's brick with a HDD is wayyyyy to heavy!

So, for me... unlocked(hope), 10GB storage (must, to be ahead, 16 + to be great), and avaiulable to bith US/Eu markets (must)

Dude you OBVIOUSLY havent played around with current smartphones yet have YOU?!

> Do you know HOW hard it is to put in a VM that can be recognized in a NORMAL conversation without being mistaken?
Scenario ("HangUP" = end phone call) ok lets say your talking with a girl you like thats being crank called endless or some dude is bugging her all night and she keeps on listening to the looser even though she doesnt like him one bit ... and you give her the advice to hangup the phone. Guess what she didnt even hear the last 2 words you said. Even the changing of PITCH or tone of voice is very difficult. Samsung are new comers to this type of technology but their the best BAR-NONE. Ericsson has had the Magic Word where you programmed a different word of your choice. SE phones carry this tradition on today but in wired mode saying anything similar to that magic word triggers it.

> 21st Century? Please, T9 is quite incredible for typing words So long as predictable text is very fast and efficiently laid out like the S60 phones from Nokia (I could type 19 words faster per min on a 6620 than I could on a K750i). Special character mapping is critical for efficiency EVEN on a full qwerty. The Treo 600/650 both are pathetic for special characters and the need to use the Stylus is still paramount. The new SE P990 is a PROVEN platform ... the basic arangement as been around 5 generations (Ericsson R380, R380e World, P800, P900/p910, now the P990. Every menu action can be down with the flip UP or down WITHOUT using the touch screen!
> MS bested Palm with their Transcriber long ago and thats ALL the props I'll give that platform.
> CrackBerry's ... many execs can type 50+ words per min on those small-qwerty keypads multiple times a day and retrieving documents attached filling out corporate forms that are sync'd to the Intranet. Their filling the consumer gap with the 8100!

Touch screens CAN be turned on accidentally with things in your pocket, even that small stylus in your draws - sorry not personal just generally meant to anyone & pocking fun in general 😀. And if they implement heat sensitivity with the finger to turn it on ... enjoy the cost of that device (implementing that technology & using a bright backlight LED and also enjoy lowered battery life. There is a HUGE corelation to battery life and size of a unit.

> What technology's other than INKWELL can Apple bring to a smartphone audience? To use it as a smartphone/media device? Media its a given; I'm not arguing that ... I'm arguing the need to have a utility belt to get what you want. Sorry I'm brute, but I'm not gonna use a purse - no matter how fashionable they get for men to use them in Italy - to use a walkman, smartphone for push email, and small video playback and casual camera photos!

> look around and see the other options ... remember with the NEWTON it was INCREDIBLE far beyond its time but the technology was way beyond what the average user could understand nor use daily; plus it was too large. I dont want a complete opposite device (dumbed down, scrawny, mundane fashionable unit for flashing around and listening to music and making phone calls with). i want innovation without sacrificing what I want and can easily assimilate without duplicating what I already have and sacrificing features that I demand in my smartphone of choice.

You said half of it with Sony Ericsson and their programable command but didnt check out this:

I'm talking more then numbers/keyboard. I mean whole new interfaces depending on feature is up. The links I provided offer some insight. I am also referring to interface things that don't show up and are user interactive without a graphic, such as two finger scrolling for your emails/text. A new interface like that of a physical interface found on the back of cameras for your camera feature, etc.

Think OLED meets Synaptics. I've never had an accidental scrolling in my pocket via anything other then my finger. In all honesty, how small do you want your phone anyway? Smaller and lighter to me, is beginning to mean harder to hold, easier to drop. Think how big the nano is vs. other phones, I think Apple has some leeway with their device.

sony ericsson k800: several of us are mentioning this fon in this thread. the k800 is probably the best mobile i have bought. apple needs to come out with the equivalent. but can the usa downscale market afford it? i doubt it.
so, in typical apple fashion they will simplify the interface and have less features at first launch. still charging a premium for apple name/iTunes connectivity. dont forget, the k800 is the first cyber-shot fon and sony differentiates it from their walkman fon lineup.

one of the things that i like very much about the k800 is the instant mobile blogging. the setup totally worked, without tinkering. blogger.com integration is seamless. so, apple does the same thing with .mac. one deal.

any apple fon would be dead out of the water without 3g/gsm capability. which carrier in the usa that apple will buy bandwidth from for their virtual carrier network will be important. in japan there was large press coverage in mainstream newspapers of masayoshi son (who just bought the vestigial vodafone japan network) telling openly to the press that he was in discussions with apple for such a network. he later retracted those comments in such a way that was obvious that the rumours were true.

speaking about apple launching a new product and the tonns of problems that early adopters of apple's first gen products have: can you imagine the software and hardware problems that are likely with apple's first gen mobile? developed in secrecy, there can only be problems. shudder.

damn damn damn

I just renewed my contract.

i still have 2 weeks to cancel, and the new phone hasn't arrived yet...

I might actually keep hold of my current one for a month or so...

just incase...

It is time

It is time for Apple to deal with the number of phones that also play tunes. Right or wrong, Apple can not continue to ignore them. IMHO the iPhone is coming and it is doing it soon.

Issue I have with Touchscreens

Hey all-

This is slightly off topic, but related to the theories on the iPhone, iTalk, whatever. With all the patents and "rumors" on Apple and touchscreens, I have to raise one (imho BIG) issue with touchscreens:

YOU CAN'T USE THEM WITHOUT LOOKING. There isn't any feedback (besides auditory), you can't FEEL your way around without actually looking. It's one reason why I would NEVER buy a smartphone that only offered touchscreen dialing. I need to be able to dial phone numbers without looking. Yes, there are voice recognition to dial specific phone numbers you have in your phone's addressbook, but there will always be times when you have to dial manually. It's far more intuitive and easier to do this without looking.

Moving to the potential (rumored) iPod, I find that a touchscreen scroll wheel cool, but (after a while) annoying. There are times when I'm out in the park, kicking back, etc. and all I need to do is turn up the volume, move to the next song (or previous song), etc. I do this BLINDLY without looking. This simply isn't possible with touchscreen only. I really hope Apple continues with real physical controls on their future iPods. The idea is cool, but imho in the "real world," it's merely a gimmick.

So very bored of these inanely stupid iPhone rumors, personally I am at a stage where I COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT THE IPHONE.

That icon sums up how much I care about the iPhone, more like iPhoney rumors.....

The network coverage in America is just awful too. Until I moved to England, I thought that mobile communications were generally problematic. Now I realize that American cellular service just sucks. Even in NYC.

America should have gotten on board with everyone else when networks apportioned and specified that the infrastructure must be GSM. Instead, though bandwidth is not really an open market, but is strictly regulate, they left it up to the providers to implement what they wanted. Now the USA is paying the price as the GSM network is way behind, and Qualcomm's CDMA has been rendered somewhat obsolete given that the rest of the world (other than Taiwan?) has rejected it.

It always amazes me how often people in movies and TV shows lose a call. I mean, it happens so much that I was beginning to think that it was perhaps a regular occurrence. After reading this thread, it looks like media's portrayal of poor cell service is bang on.

I have never been in an area of no coverage over here. Never. In fact, I very rarely lose a call-- maybe once a month and that could be due to a number of reasons (battery, accidentally hitting a button, etc.) on my end or the other person's end. I guess living in a geographically small country with a kickass cell infrastructure is spoiling me.

New York has more of something than Wyoming, which is buildings. These buildings make it more difficult for signal to get to people, I think. For whatever reasons CDMA seems to work much better here than GSM.

Seoul and the surrounding area-- with its 20+ million people-- also has a lot of big buildings, not to mention large mountains. I'm no expert, but I think there's a simple solution to the building-signal problem. Here, I believe, they install cell receivers (or something) virtually everywhere: in tunnels, buildings, subway stations, even restaurants. I used to warn people that I might get disconnected whenever I drove through a big tunnel on my way to work. Then, the reception problem was fixed. Never an issue. Can someone with more technical expertise shed some light on this issue?

Oh, for those interested, a stat from March 2006:

Here's a stat that will shock no one: Cell phone users in the United
States have increased from 34 million a decade ago to more than 203
million
, which comes very close to fulfilling the Supreme Court's one
man-one cell phone mandate. World-wide, there are an estimated two
billion cell phones
, which means an unfortunate 4.5 billion people go to
bed every night without cell-phoning.

Yeah, that's probably what Apple is banking on. Sure, an Apple phone will cannibalize some iPod sales (likely the shuffle if the nano's memory gets upped to 8GB or so), but that's better than losing sales to the competition.

-Squire

I think it's just about time to start doing major music on phones now. About a year ago, nobody wanted to combine their iPod and phone, but now, I think people would. And if Apple jumps on this before Samsung and Moto, not cannibalise the smaller iPods, and find their extra sparkly wand!, then they're made.

What About Japan ???????

Its needs to be released here to do well !! An ipod phone will help Apple in the fact that AU's Lismo downloading service has taken off and recently downloading parts of video clips to be used as a kind of ringtone is very popular here.

see this for info about mobile phones and music in Japan

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/may2006/gb20060515_669205.htm

its alittle bit old but still has some good information about how Apple will find it hard to keep itunes popular here unless they release a mobile version of the store....Alot of my students think that itunes doesnt have enough music on the Japanese store anyway so they keep on renting cds and copying them (yes you can do that in Japan thru shops such as tsutaya)...

so its getting to the stage that here, with your phone you can take 3 mega pixel photos, watch and record TV on it, use it as a GPS device to keep track of your kids, use the net on it, play music, watch videos etc etc...

Apple needs to either release an iphone or go into a parntership with other company suck as Softbank (old vodafone)

Living in a smaller country helps a lot. The US is a heck of a lot bigger than Korea and therefore coverage isn't always good. Most intestates are totally covered and city coverage is usually very good. I would like to know why there are some dead spots here and there but for the most part, I can't complain ... at least where I live (Eastern US).

iPhone with wifi

If Apple is indeed getting something new on the market it should be able to connect to your local wifi network so your phone could use the internet for making calls whenever your in reach of your local/work network.

Now too much people in Europe still need a fixed phone and a mobile.
Let's wait and see.
