Living in a smaller country helps a lot. The US is a heck of a lot bigger than Korea and therefore coverage isn't always good. Most intestates are totally covered and city coverage is usually very good. I would like to know why there are some dead spots here and there but for the most part, I can't complain ... at least where I live (Eastern US).

yeah I dont get why people seem to think calls are dropped all the time. For me when calls are dropped there general are some very understanbile reasons. one I am in the the middle of no where driving with poor signal strainght to begin with. Middle of no where just to begin with, with very spotty signal (1 bar that drops in an out). Those general are the big 2 and by middle of no where I am at least 20-30 miles from the nearest town (and a town that hardly is even worth dot statis). and a few hours from a major city. The other one is I be walking though a certain building at school that just destory all wireless signal strength (of any type, wifi , cell and so on)

In small countries (Eurpean Korea and such). The Wireless is not so much limited on distance from a tower as it is tower getting over loaded with just cell phones. Solution is put more anteincas and towers up. So every where is covered due to the huge need of overlaping areas.

Yes, I realize that size matters. 😀 I wonder if Canada is any better or worse than the US. One would think with the larger area and 1/9th of the population it would be far worse. Can any Canucks out there comment?

I can drive a dozen places in 30 minutes without any type of service, including a major interstate (as you say: most). Providers say they cover the area but I've challenged each and every one of them to prove me wrong. A couple came out, tried, and lost signal. I'm talking cell phone and radio services. If they can't handle the hills around Boston they are not pushing technology, they are playing politics, and they are sitting on their laurels. It is totally unacceptable that service in the U.S. is controlled by so few and so poor. IF Apple were to produce something I would hope it would shake up the industry but alas, I do not believe they will.

you have any idea how much hill kill signal strenght. As for proving you wrong I drive 600 miles from houston to lubbock (or lub to houston) several times a year. On that Drive there is only ONE small area that my cell doesnt work. That area happens to be about 10-15 mile strech of road where I am climbing a hill with steep sides on either side of it. Clear that and I have signal back.

Also bettween Dallas and lubbock there are 3 towns I hit. First 3 hours west of dallas and that is the largest. rest have pops under 10k

another wild speculation

After been following this thread for a while now, I think it is safe to say that there is room for improvements in the wireless-phone business both in europe and america.
This might be what Steve Jobs has observed too and has directed Apple to work on. Apple bought a huge top-of-the-line communication facility half a year ago(?). There was a lot of speculation just why Apple bought this place, everythng from expanding the .mac service to video on demand for iTMS.
This acquisition could be one piece of a big media puzzle to free Apple from being crippled crippled by the typical american network carriers restrictions. Imagine some sort of a communication device that will work wireless and seamless with iLife, iCal, .mac, and iChat in a Apple owned wireless network (basically .mac on steroids where this new network would also be a (virtual) carrier). To make this happen you need at least three things:

* Infrastructure
They have already bought a communication facility and they could work as a virtual operator while they build up their own infrastructure.

* iPhone
Since it is Apple we are talking about you also need a their own communication device.

* Software
A plan like this would explain the "top-secret" features of Leopard. A beefed up .mac that allows wireless iChat, iTMS,... Also consider that .mac has been more or less stagnant for a couple of years now. I pay $99/year for email and 250Mb storage. Besides from fanatic mac heads, who will go for that deal when you get free email with 1Gb storage for free??? It can't be many. So why do Apple keep it?

I do realize these speculations are far out there. In fact pretty damn close to UFO sightings. However, given Jobs RDF™ I wouldn't rule it completely.

Coverage here is pretty good, but only within & around towns. Out in the bush, its non-existent. The phone companies seem to have been pretty good at installing towers where there are people, and also along highways... but not elsewhere.

There are exceptions though - I was in the rockies a few weeks ago - no problems as long as you're within line of sight of a tower (same in Scotland too, if I remember correctly). I've never had a dropped call in my life though.

Do you think the images of the iphone that have leaked out onto the net are going to be the similar to what it will really look like? How much do you think it might cost? I need a MAC PDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😱

These rumors surrounding the iPhone have been around for quite a while now, so I sure hope it becomes reality sooner rather than later. Who knows, if it’s really good I may actually buy my first cell phone ever. 😎

WOW you dont have a cell phone?!

Nope. Kinda proud of it too. 😎 My wife has one through work, so we use that sparingly but otherwise, I couldn't be bothered. Sometimes I just don't want people to be able to get a hold of me. If they want to, they can phone my land line and leave a message or e-mail me. Simple. All these carriers, spotty coverage, poor customer service, call plans with hidden fees, quality issues with some phones - meh, couldn't be bothered. 😎

That's the exact reason I dropped my land line for a cell phone. 😉 I was very anti-cell phone for a long time but finally got tired of my land line provider (Down with Qwest!!) and got a cell phone. The freedom and peace of mind that the phones provide to my wife and I are priceless.

To each their own! 🙂

Give me something like the promising E-TEN G500+ with Apple based operating system. All specs mentioned before means basic to me, only the build-in GPS would make me jump high. I need something that finally allows me to through out all these little electronic gadgets which make business lives easier... Phone, organizer, navigation.

Aye. 🙂

But once the iPhone comes out you will definitely fall to the dark side with the rest of us. 😀

I sure hope it comes out this month, and it's reasonably priced. 🙄 😉

As I said in my initial post, I might definitely do just that. 😎

There is a somewhat distinct chance that that is a very real possibility perhaps. 😎

Seriously, no, I hate politics. 😉 😀

So do you have a rotary dial phone? 😉 Or one of them newfangled touch-tone thingies

iPhone = bad idea and difficult to implement beyond the USA.

Why would it be difficult to implement beyond the USA? Having lived in Europe for most of my life and in the US for more than one year I can tell you that the cellphones in the US are years after what we have over here...

GSM. We have used it as a standard for...15 years or more... If Apple releases an iPhone it will be GMS, off course... Because then it can be used in the rest of the world.

As for locking the phone to a certain provider. If it is a GMS phone it will only be locked to the GMS bands, you can always buy the phone without a plan and use your old SIM card in it...

How did you know? I keep it right next to my Commodore Pet and my Colecovision. 😎

Didn't read the 15 pages of posts, my eyes will hurt for 2 days. Anyhow when I think about this I'm pretty stoked. As a dedicated Apple user and supporter along with others on here this is awesome. One Apple makes solid products, never had a problem with one, so I would assume these phones would be high quality. All I know is people can't live without cell phones. I mean you can get away without one but I know I feel disconnected without one since its a huge source of contact. I think it would be wise for Apple to take up some ground in this area. I know I would buy one, as long as they are nice.

Colecovision! Ha! Brilliant! I still have a working one in the closet somewhere, I should pull that thing out sometime and give it another go, it's been years and years. 😀

Yes, Colecovision rocked!

Ah, but did you have the Colecovision Portable? 😱 😎
