Is is better to wait for the 2012 iMac or build a 2012 Hackintosh?

Running an illegal installation of OSX on a PC doesn't make it anything other than a normal PC.

My £800 2008 PC runs Lion, gets a geekbench score of over 8500 and runs like an absolute dream. Don't kid yourself that Apple hardware runs OSX better than PC hardware.

Thats all it scores? A Mac mini scores higher than that and I'd bet your PeeCee doesn't look or function anywhere near as well.

My mac mini only scores 7154 (i5 2.5Ghz), my Hackintosh (Yes, Hackintosh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSx86) scores 13823.

I'm not sure why you feel so against them. If someone wants to put together their own hardware and run OSX, then good for them. It doesn't have to be an "us" and "them" situation. We're all running on Intel chips at the end of the day.

A 2008 mac mini? Not in a million years m8. The 2011 iMac base model only scores about 8000! So a 2008 mac mini? Just no.
My hackintosh functions as well as my late 2011 15" mbp. Fine, keep your head in the fanboy sand, but ur wrong.

But there's less hassle with apple hardware.

I've never had an issue with my PC hardware. It lasts "forever" if you build with quality components.
But yes, every major OSX update you have to fiddle a bit. Plus Apple aesthetics are very nice. Hence the reason I convinced my parents to get one (iMac) when they get refreshed.

OSX rocks. Apple aesthetics are fantastic.

If/when someone gets ML to work on the Dell XPS 27 AIO, I'd be all over it.

But then again, I can't even figure-out how to buy ML from the Apple Mac Store. All buttons point to "view in Mac store" and then circle-round again w/o ever getting to a "put in cart". Presumably you have to be ON A MAC to get access to ML? Do you Mac guys know: will ML be offered on USB stick? I'd have thought if Apple was going to do that they'd have done it from Day 1.

Apparently you're not a fan of capable GPUs then.

Once you're actually on a Mac, you can make a bootable USB stick (etc.) out of a Mountain Lion install. But no, you can't actually get it outside the Mac App Store. I recall reading that the USB sticks for Lion didn't sell well at all so they didn't bother with ML.

You sir, are not a mac. You make me sick.

Extremely harsh words for someone who hasn't done anything remotely offensive to incur such vilification! What else is bothering you in life besides Macs versus Hackintosh? What he decides to build in his spare time, with his hard earned money is his prerogative. Leave the guy alone and start looking into checking in your antiquated PowerPC Mac into the local antiques shop.

Sure, with an external ;)
I know, but this defeats the purpose of the iMac--a nice, clean, wireless desktop. I expect too that one can install a slot-loaded BD drive in place of the Apple drive, but if I get an iMac I'll also get AppleCare and I won't want to mess with the innards.

It's 2012; Apple really needs to re-think their "no BD" stance. I guess if you live in Cupertino you have unlimited access to the Cloud, but those of us who live in the extreme country have very limited bandwidth.

That is false information.

On who's authority do you stand to falsely claim that Ivy Bridge was released in March. According to ALL of the internet and a number of reputable web sites, INCLUDING the very web site (check the RED link below) you are visiting and spewing false information on, Ivy Bridge was indeed released in April, the latter end of it. The chips may have been made available to manufacturers for testing in their products prior to the scheduled April release. I present truth, not fallacies of the tongue.

Decided to not really wait anymore and instead tweak my current setup with my 2010 mbp. Picked up an SSD and 8Gb RAM. Now just deciding between an ACD or Dell U2711.

Will wait til after the year to pick up the 2012 iMac if it ever comes out. And use whatever display i go with and set it up as dual monitor.

What issues? They have been making the screens for the last 2 years.

Wow, i'm not on here even 1 day and the poorly educated people are already attacking my facts with their poorly informed opinions.
Ivy Bridge was released in March, along with multiple Windows laptops and desktops featuring the processors.

Everyone block "forty2j", clearly he knows nothing about macs or computer hardware.

Clearly we need the downvote button back

Nobody said a 2008 mini, learn how to read.

Are you capable of reading? Yes, maybe? Then read the links I posted.

You question everyone else's capacity for literacy, yet yours seems limited and apparently dysfunctional. Your sources are grossly outdated and incorrect.

I have been a Mac owner since 1991. Today, I went and purchased my parts for my first Hackintosh. I'm sick and tired of waiting for a proper Mac Pro replacement and my Mac Pro 1,1 is abandoned by Apple.

Core i7 3770K
Gigabyte Z77 UDH5
Nvidia GT480
16 GB RAM
650W PSU
Fractal Design R3 case
Apple USB Extended Keyboard
Kensington Mouse

Total cost of parts ~$1000

I already have the 2GB hard drive and a Blu-Ray burner in my Mac Pro waiting to transfer. I'll be adding a 24" IPS Dell Monitor for around $400. This beast is infinitely better than the iMac I was considering which doesn't even have USB3.

Great decision, I'm sure that you won't regret it.
