There must be a good reason why 2012 Imac is not out yet. Most likely it all becomes clear shortly

Apple cares little for 'hope'. Just look at the Mac Pro.

In contrary, Apple is smart enough to keep up with false hope. Now poor saps out there must hold on till next year for a new MacPro, just because Tim said so in an email, which he might or might not wrote himself.
So there might be a new MacPro .. or not.

If they want to keep the lid off MacPro, just kill it already instead of giving it a slow and disgraceful death.

Lame, slow updates and all that. Way to put a fine and respectable desktop product down in the pit.

I, like everyone else, have been waiting for the new iMac refresh or redesign for the past few months or so.

Recently I stumbled upon a deal so insane... if I were to mention it here... not many would actually believe me.

Now this deal is in the works so I can't comment on the experience yet but I will list what I'm expecting to receive.

It's a "Hackintosh" of sorts I suppose.

It's a PC running Windows, Mountain Lion and Fedora with separate partitions.

It has an i7 3770k processor (Over clocked to 4.3ghz) with an Asus Sabertooth motherboard.
32 gigs of Corsair Vengeance RAM.
Dual EVGA GTX 560 Ti graphic cards.
Liquid cooling unit.
128 gig SSD.
1 TB Harddrive.
1050 Watt Power Supply by Corsair.
Crazy looking case.

All of the requested software below will be installed, updated and running properly.

Now to be clear... this was sheer luck on my behalf. I will still need to purchase a monitor or HD TV along with a mouse and keyboard etc.

Regardless... if everything works as promised I will certainly not be buying the new iMac this October.

However if it is just a giant headache... I'll still take the plunge.

Alright eff it... I'll tell you. I've spent $250 in total.

Long story. If everything turns out as planned I'll let you know.

And then I woke up ...

Well if you spent 250 on that then it must have pirated software. The CPU alone is worth that on the used market. I wouldn't deal with stolen product.

By the time the 2012 iMac is out, everyone will be discussing the 2013 model iMacs anyway,

Just bought the 2011 model with 16 gigs RAM. I'm 100% satisfied with the purchase. I'd never buy a hackintosh. I just love Apple and can't do anything about it ;)

Is not about the discussion of a new computer. It's about the fact no one wants to pay for 2011 hardware. A lot of us don't have unlimited money so we need to make the best of our money so whatever it takes to maximize the value we will do that. But obviously you don't understand or care because you have a 2011 iMac so you would even like if apple come out with new iMac because If apple releases a new one you won't have the latest thing. You rather not feel that way huh.

Someone just got ripped off.

Not only that. I´m using the machine professionally, so I can write it off. So, for me the budget is pretty much unlimited, I´m prepared to pay $6000 if I have to, don´t care. It´s just the limitations of the hardware that holds me back. I know today I can get any other machine (non mac) with a terrabyte of SSD, 680 nvidia and Ivy Bridge 8 cores and 32gb of ram. I know I can buy this, but I WANT an iMac in my living room. So as close as I can get to these stats the better, so why settle with a 2011 iMac when I KNOW this hardware is out on the market and I KNOW apple is adding at least some of this in the next iMac.

I work with large images and tons of layers. Recently just finished a job with a image that had 25.000X12.000 pixel size and around 100 layers. Believe it or not, I managed to finish it on a early 2009 iMac with 8gb of ram, though it took ages and I felt the machine were about to crash on me as the HDD scrathced like hell and loading and saving the image took about 15-20 mins every time. And I had to close down everything else on the mac for it not to crash. This is not a good environment to work in...But still I gotta say, this is a 3.5 years old iMac (I´ve upgraded my Windows PC at least 2 times in between at my day office and they both get sluggish over time even with much "better" hardware than my iMac) So, at least that proves the durability and quality of Apple products.

Pros and Cons

Probably the biggest issue with a hack versus a Mac build is the maintenance and troubleshooting stuff yourself. If something goes wrong with a hackintosh, you can't just take it in and and have someone magically cure it for you. This is also an advantage, since it's much easier to troubleshoot and replace hardware yourself on a hack than it is on an imac. The initial set up is super easy though - kakewalk is worth a look for this.

Price and the ability to upgrade are 2 more good reasons to go the hackintosh route. You can easily build yourself something comparable to a Mac Pro and add hard drives and switch out components at will. Especially great for anyone who works with video. If you're a gamer then the ability to dual boot is key too.

I guess it really depends on what you want it for and how comfortable you are with maintaining it yourself. If i was just using it for web, writing, or even just graphics work and the aesthetics and clutter were a concern i, would probably wait myself.

Well let alone the software be stolen think about the hardware. Maybe the whole pc is stolen and resold (ebay?). Have fun. I personally would never believe in such a "deal".

I wouldnt trust the deal. I would ask seller to provide me with the proof of purchase or serial number of components.
I bet the software is illegal too, there's no way he/she'd sell it for such a price,it simply doesnt make sense.
I got ripped once time from similar offer,if you follow through the deal make sure the transaction isnt shady, best way would be local pickup (and bring one friend with you).

I'm waiting for the new iMac, too. My time is limited- must buy it before the 16th of September. If it doesn't arrive until then- I'll probably go for Mbook Pro plus a big, 27 inches display. Hackintosh? Never. ;)

You will probably go better with the old high end 27-inch iMac than with the new retina macbook pro... The old iMac graphic card is still better than the one in the new retina macbook pro, and the iMac has a desktop CPU.

I will wait until September 12, and if they don't release a new iMac I'll sadly buy a Hackintosh :(

If you want a deadline with a reasonable chance of having a new model, it would be Oct 9. Getting iMacs in the middle of an iPhone announcement would be extraordinary (and very unlikely).

I've already bought the iMac. Couldn't wait any longer.

Have Apple ever announced a product less than a month after announcing other product? I think this is unlikely too, unless they make a silent refresh of the iMac.

If you either NEED or even if you simply WANT a new Macintosh then the thing to do is just go buy one now. Or you can wait until who knows when if you want to do that. I really can't see waiting if you want something good now. The current model Macs are nice machines. They do not all suddenly suck because a refresh may or may NOT be coming "real soon now."

I see no need for a hackintosh to be part of the equation since that is NOT a Macintosh. I'll take the real deal over a "hack" any day.

No they likely wouldn't do back to back events, but the iMac rarely gets an event anyway. They would do a silent refresh 2-3 weeks after an event for another product though, and have done so in the past. Current record I believe is 2010 minis silently refreshed 3 days after WWDC.

Hello All,

I was interested to see who here is still patiently waiting for the supposed 2012 iMac, or has hopped on the Hackintosh bandwagon? I have been following this website for sometime now:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/100-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-2012.html

They have some really great custom builds there, with native Ivy Bridge, Thunderbolt, and Nvidia Kepler desktop graphics support, all running under the awesomeness of Mountain Lion. A moderately powerful build will run you around $1600, throw in a decent Dell monitor, and you're looking at $1900-2000 total. Not bad at all considering the raw performance you obtain with such a rig, and the ability to boot both OSX and Windows. I am eagerly awaiting the new iMac, but I dare to admit, I am easily tempted at the thought of building my own gaming/computing rig that could run both OSes. Anyone here have any experience with Hackintoshes? I know there's few tinkering involved as far as settings and drivers/kexts and what have you, and there's also the issue of aesthetics (I personally love the simplicity of the iMacs all in one, and prefer that over all the wires, clutter, and wasted space that comes with having a huge tower, monitor, and speakers), but these appear to be minute annoyances, and the stability of such systems are much improved and have come along way. If I were to build, I would follow the guide exactly and select the recommended/compatible hardware. I have a MacBook Air as a backup machine if anything goes wrong. What do you guys think? Is is better off just avoiding this headache altogether and just waiting for the new iMac? (which is a headache in and of itself!)

I don't entirely care for these builds, I'm a big fan of Corsair but you should really go for one of their fully modular power supplies like the AX850 if you do this, you'll get way cleaner cable management... Also, recommending the Corsair 600T chassis is kind of ridiculous, take a look at the Corsair 650D instead, it's a superior chassis for the same price... The stock is kind of meh on the Corsair H60 they recommend, I'd swap it out for something like Scythe Gentle Typhoons AP-15s (get two for push/pull), they have higher Static Pressure/CFM and lower dBA levels.... and maybe go for the H100 if you can afford it.. Don't get a Sandisk SSD, lol, get a Samsung 830 or a Crucial M4... Samsung has better performance, but am partial to Crucial's tech support....

Would go for the EVGA for your Nvidia card, they have killer tech support like Corsair, will let you RMA anything on the drop of a dime if needed... the GTX 670/680 if gaming @ 1440p, and if gaming at 1080p would save the money and get the GTX 660 ti...

I'm not really fond of Gigabyte motherboards (or Gigabyte period) - they can't speak English, and if for some reason you have to deal w/ them expect to get canned responses in broken English and be genuinely pissed off.... but you really have to go with one of their boards if you're gonna use tonycrap's pre-edited DSDT... which doesn't teach you anything about hackintoshing... and won't get you as clean of an install as learning to do things by hand...
