I was at an Apple store, genius bar, when a sketchy guy with a ridiculous story tried to activate an iPhone he said was a 'gift'. Turned out it was stolen. He was escorted to the back where the Chicago Police were waiting for him. My genius bar guy said he sees that happen a lot. They WILL confiscate a stolen product and they will call the police. Just another reason I love Apple.

So heres the latest update...

We went back to the Wal-mart and talked to security after a phone call the day before. It turns out that the guy who stole the iPad was there while we were, and we had even walked around the Wal-mart scoping it out when we had returned that night. The details security was able to give us were a picture of the guy, not the greatest but a picture nonetheless, and it wasn't the same guy I had a picture of. However, the way I look at it maybe its better to have two guys to look for rather than one, 2 needles in a haystack are easier to find than one. Call it flawed logic or whatever but I'm trying to be optimistic.

Some additional details were that he had gone to the coinstar machine to cash in change and then picked up a pack of cigarettes and did the rest of his shopping. Unfortunately he paid with that cash and no credit card. Based off of this and that I have a picture of another guy I'm guessing this guy didn't have much money and did in fact sell it.

The detective has been in touch with me and has sent out the photos in an effort to identify the two men, but thats where we're at right now, thought you'd all like the update.

Thanks for the update.

My guess: the guy grabbed it, then later sold it - most likely at a pawn shop, or perhaps a 'cash converters' type place. If you look at that first photo, the background looks quite 'shop like'. If that's right, then the photo you got was probably the guy in the shop giving it a quick test to check it's all working. It does look kind of like he's checking it over, so maybe.

I'd check where the closest cash converter/pawn shops are to the walmart, and pay them a visit - the guy in the photo should be easy to spot. Possibly they'll have your ipad sat right there on a shelf, and it's likely they'll have some details of the guy that sold it too.

It wasn't a robbery because it wasn't taken directly from his person by force or threat of fear.

It also wasn't a burglary because there was no tools or forced entry to remove it.

It is a simple theft. Something that didn't belong to the thief was taken by them and converted for their own use. That is a theft regardless of how the person came into contact with it.

Technically every car in the walmart parking lot is abandoned but you can't just get in one of those and take IT home right? They, also, were left by their owners in the parking lot just like the OPs iPad...but if you came out and your car was missing you'd be saying someone STOLE your vehicle...not "oh MAN!! I lost my car!"

i have some advice, when the find my ipad comes on have 3 things ready,
a brick(to throw thought the window)
a bat (to hit any one who comes out)
a tissue incase it dosent come on :(

He sold already to buy crack or meth...

Hopefully if he did he sold it to a pawn shop. They get the information for the sellers so they have a good idea of where to find them and they have to give the item back if it's stolen by law which means they are even more likely to look for the thief and get their money back from him as well.

I don't get it. The guy who stole the iPad was there when you were and you didn't follow him to see his license plate, where he goes after he left? But security gave you a picture of that guy and it's not the same person in your picture? And how do you have 2 guys? The guy in the picture and where'd the evidence for the second guy come from?

Thanks for the update.

Okay, there's no way you can infer what he's doing with the iPad. That's like saying he looks like he using Yelp, so check all he restaurants.

The guy stole an ipad, used a coinstar machine, bought cigarettes and paid in cash. I infer from that that he's not wealthy. I might be totally wrong, but it seems reasonably likely.

If he's fairly poor, chances are he wants money more than the ipad (especially if it's "hot"). And we know from the first photo that somebody else has used the ipad, not that long after it was stolen. So it's not that unreasonable to infer that he sold it, and that guy in the first photo could well be the guy he sold it to.

If he did sell it, a local pawn type shop would be a good place to get cash for it quickly. It's worth a shot I'd say.

It's not unreasonable to suggest he sold it because when people steal expensive electronics that's what many thieves do. But not based on the fact that he looks like he's "checking it over" or whatever you said.

This made me LOL. Last weekend I emptied the console in my truck of all the change I'd accumulated over the last few months. Used Coinstar, bought Copenhagen and paid in cash.

For the record, I fall into the upper middle class demographic.

Didn't steal an iPad though.

Well, it's all speculation on some level. We can only guess based on the evidence we have. To me though, this photo doesn't say "the guy is trying out photobooth", it says "I'm making sure this thing works, loading some applications while checking it for damage, WHOOPS just pressed the camera button". I'm probably wrong.

That made me LOL too - you bought Copenhagen?! Surely that puts you right at the top of the mega wealthy class! :D (What is Copenhagen, I'm guessing you don't mean the capital of Denmark?)

But yeah, of course *anyone* could have done exactly that. A nun could walk in and do the same. Some social groups are more likely to do this kind of thing in a supermarket than others though.

Its "chew" "dip" or "snuff". Aka chewing tobacco lol

Any new info on the iPad? I may have missed it but wasn't this iPad connected to mobile me so you could use the find my iPad feature right away and see where about it was located? I hope that it is located and I know I'd be lost without my iPad!

I was just about to ask who in their right mind still chews tobacco...and then I see you're from San Antonio.

...god I hate this city.

If you left a pile of cash in a walmart cart, would you say that was stolen also? If something is not in your possession, it cannot be stolen from you. You lost it. Buy another. Lesson learned. Total bummer though. I FREAk when I lose my iShit.

If I park my car in the car park, and somebody takes it... is that me losing it? :p
