If you have the box, get the serial number (or call apple and ask for it with proof of your purchase) and report it stolen/missing to the police. Most the time, people who take that are going to pawn it or sell it somewhere else. Pawn shops have a data base of serial #'s where cops can use a system to automatically match stolen goods.

That's what I did when my iPod 4g was stolen from my house. Police wound up finding it the next day in a local pawn shop on loan for $80 to the dumb-ass that stole it!

Give the picture to the police! They can scan their database with it and find out who it is!

And then they'll call Jack Bauer to come save the day!

OP, I had a brand new pair of aviators stolen (because I KNOW they were in my bag, having worn them to the store) at Wally World last week. Hope you get it back, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

The people who are obsessing about it being *lost* and not *stolen* are trying to harp on the fact that the OP had culpability. Yes, the OP made a mistake, but nonetheless it is stolen.

How's that "stolen" chief ? It wasn't taken out of a parked car or picked from a purse.

It was left unattended in a public area, next to nothing.Finders keepers IMO.

–verb (used with object)
1. to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, especially secretly or by force: A pickpocket stole his watch.

While the OP did in fact "lose" the iPad, the scruffy pirate man did in fact "steal" it thereafter.

I hope you guys are never on a jury, wow. Theft is the taking of an individual's property without intention to return said property to rightful owner.

Yes, the OP lost it. Then, someone found it and (apparently?) is keeping it without the intention to return the property to its owner. That is theft. You don't have to creep into a person's house and pry it out of their hands to steal it.

Next time use an iPad lock

Probably not comforting but iPad theft is an epidemic in the making...
For her B-Day, I got my girlfriend the iPad2, and since she insists on taking it everywhere, I just got her an iPad lock http://www.maclocks.com/index.php/i-pad-lock.html?SID=5f7c96221a02788cb2f100f85fc8e870. If you had one, you could have simply lock your iPad to the cart, and find it when you came back. Seriously consider buying one if you're getting another iPad. It's a small investment compared with the not-so-potential loss.

My iPad goes everywhere with me--it's always in my backpack. I would be royally pissed if I lost it. I work in downtown Chicago--all anyone would have to do to get my iPhone 4, iPad 2, $100 Bluetooth headset, and the chargers for all three, would be to steal my backpack. Yes, I have everything locked and activated on Find My iPhone, but still.......

The only thing is using this would be annoying and tie you to the shopping cart. After a while a person would probably stop using it and then be back to square one

hi all... so I read most of this post.. my only thought to protect this hot item right now would be to password protect it... doesn't that help? I know it doesn't help the OP but for others.. I use it and it seems to help me sleep better.. or am I delusional?!?!

All they have to do is restore it. Of course in the case of the OP he had iOS 5 beta installed. So a restore would be more difficult for the normal theft :)

Wow I wasnt expecting such a reaction

I only wanted to help 

Perhaps I missed it, but what part of your post below was helpful?

At least it was an iPad 1; nobody has yet to say that was pretty dumb to bring an iPad to walmart

Why?

Prick me and do I not bleed?!

It was an ill attempt at humour

If you mean something as a joke, you might want to provide some indication of that fact. Otherwise it just looks like you are insensitive and rude. Even if you meant it originally as a joke, as opposed as meaning it later after people took issue with your post, how was that being helpful like you claimed?

Cheers

So sad sad story. Went shopping at good old walmart tonight and unfortunately when dummy here went to load the groceries I didn't take the iPad out of the cart, turns out the color of the iPad blends in quite well with the cart. Of course the walmart is in a lousy neighborhood so even though we realized and were back in only 5 minutes it was gone, cart in the same exact place but no iPad. Now I'm stuck waiting and very hopeful with Find My iPad since its a wifi only model. No luck yet but trying to stay hopeful. Just wondering if you all have any advice or have any hopeful stories for this kind of situation. Thanks guys.

P.S. Anybody know if renters insurance would cover something like this, I'm trying to see if my policy would but of course Progressives sight is down right now.
you shop at wal-mart??? lol.

Seeing this, reminds me of "The Club" lock for parked cars. (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Club-Steering-Wheel-Lock/dp/B0000CBILL)

If you left a pile of cash in a walmart cart, would you say that was stolen also? If something is not in your possession, it cannot be stolen from you. You lost it. Buy another. Lesson learned. Total bummer though. I FREAk when I lose my iShit.

Yes. It has happened in the past where bags of money have been lost by armored car services that transport cash to/from the bank. It is highly illegal to simply "find" and keep these bags of cash.

If you don't make a concerted effort to find the real owner, it is indeed theft.

Mislaid property

Mislaid property

Property is generally deemed to have been mislaid or misplaced if it is found in a place where the true owner likely did intend to set it, but then simply forgot to pick it up again. For example, a wallet found in a shop lying on a counter near a cash register will likely be deemed misplaced rather than lost. Under common law principles, the finder of a misplaced object has a duty to turn it over to the owner of the premises, on the theory that the true owner is likely to return to that location to search for his misplaced item. If the true owner does not return within a reasonable time (which varies considerably depending on the circumstances), the property becomes that of the owner of the premises.[9]

The OP did return. The iPad is stolen.
