I just wanted to say that I shipped in a new iPad a couple of days ago with what I thought to be an uneven backlight / yellow tint (I first got upset about it and then went online to look around, so I guess my concern was genuine).

As per now, it says "Product Replacement Pending". So I guess the people who are annoyed about the screens are not completely wrong and nitpicky.

Good stuff. Apple considers it a defect too. That should take care of the internet doctors and bubble heads (the ones living in a bubble where everything is fine).

The screens are DEFECTIVE.

The screens are DEFECTIVE.

Some are, some aren't

If I say my screen is fine, therefore everyone who is complaining is nitpicking or imagining things, I'd be wrong.

If someone else says I'm oblivious or blinded by Apple love because I'm happy with the screen I have, they're wrong.

The nitpicky people, IMO, are those who go to great lengths to find flaws that aren't apparent in normal use, or who post asking how to figure out if they have a problem. If you can't see a flaw without being coached, it's not a problem.

Bottom line and end of story.

This turned into an interesting discussion.

I think people just have unrealistic expectations of Apples products these days. IPads are not hand crafted or super premium or like Apple says "Pro" devices. They are mass produced for the mainstream by cheap overseas labor who have to meet quotas.

Its like expecting the same quality and attention to detail of a hand made Aston Martin with a mass procuced BMW or Mercedes. It just doesn't work that way.

For Apple to build a perfect iPad, whatever that is, would also cost more money to produce and Apple is all about the margins.

OP needs to get a life and stop obsessing over getting a perfect iPad. So sick of first world problems by hipsters with OCD. And yea a computer, an iPhone, and an iPad are tools so accept that nothing is perfect and that your BS examples are the sign of serious issues you should deal with.

not gonna lie...i just opened up my new ipad that i just bought from best buy and there are a couple circular scratches on the aluminum back...i am contemplating returning it but i feel like its so insignificant that i shouldn't...

If the scratches are insignificant and the display is good you might consider keeping it. You'll be even more disappointed to bring back a replacement with a crappy display.

Saw my friend's iPad just now. Flawless screen for a 32gb wifi version. I am convinced good ones exist. So if she can get a good one, so should I. Not about being nitpicky or not. Unless Apple gives me a discount for a less than perfect screen, I don't see why I should settle for something which isn't as good as my friend's.

This from a guy on an iPad forum on the internet. That's rich.

Funny eh? I agree and I'm wondering if all Mac forums are like this place. I'm getting a little tired of the MacDouches here.

Why are people so nitpicky about what people on this forum post and care about? Why are people so nitpicky about "nitpickers"?

I think part of the issue is that to many ipad purchasers, it is an adult toy for personal use, and they want "their little toy" to be just perfect.

For those of us who purchased them for work use, the tiniest flaws (if they exist on mine, I cannot see them as I'm an old guy whose 20/20 vision days are long past) are just not as big a deal.

What I don't understand is for those who are purchasing them in apple stores, why aren't they taking the box and walking over to one of the apples guys in blue at the helper desks to analyze the device, test it, and make sure its perfect before leaving the store?

I took the box and had them do software-based testing diagnostics and studied the screen carefully before walking out. Why waste time going home and having to go back to do an exchange?

BTW, I do really like my iPad and think it is a wonderful device - been using it for days and the battery is still at 67%...just amazing.

I disagree. The iPad is a screen. That's all you really see. If the display is less than optimal why would anyone keep it? Why would anyone, whether purchased for work or just as a 'toy' be willing to put up with a screen that is mult-colored, pink, yellow, etc.?

The way I see it is Apple demands a premium price. Anyone purchasing one has every right to demand a premium device in return.

I'm older too (61) and while my eyesight may not be as good as it was a few years ago if I'm going to look at anything like an iPad for any length of time I want it to be 'perfect' too. Mine is, color is right, no bleeding, doesn't get too hot, etc. but I fully understand why someone wants the same for their hard-earned money.

I guess the thing I DON'T understand is why people on this forum seem to flame anyone else who wasn't 'lucky' enough to get a good one. If you're happy with yours fine, but if others are not then back off. Don't like it, don't read the threads. It's not an insult to you or even Apple.

Sheesh.....

I honestly think this is the way the screen is. My ex Samsung Galaxy S2 screen was terrible if I was not looking at the LCD directly it would turn dirty yellow.

I went to Best Buy and FutureShop today to look at the screens on the new ipads and they all looked the same to me. I don't think there are people out there who got lucky with the screen I just think there are people out there who have a higher sensitivity to colors and pick up on the imperfections.
There is a yellow tint to the screen especially from different viewing angles but I just don't bother with it.

Actually thinking of it also my 24 inch Samsung screen on my PC is a little yellow when not looking at it directly.

I have to say I agree with this to no end. I disagree with people putting in an analogy like ''if your car comes with a dent/scratch it's still functional so you should keep it''. Think of it this way, if it's a scratch or a ding, you can still respray it....but what about the screen of an Ipad with a ding or uneven tint or dead pixel? How do you fix it? People just need to be more sympathetic and sensible sometimes.

Sorry my friend, Samsung galaxy s2 is using Super AMOLED plus screen rather than LCD. My girl's Samsung galaxy s2 and samsung galaxy tab 7.7 don't have this issue. But I admit there is also limitation as to the
'ripple like' effect sometimes with certain movie playback which doesn't always occur.

So when you say u have analysed and studied the screen well in the store is your iPad free from the yellow tint display and backlight bleeding problem ? Can u post some pictures of your screen !

I have never seen an LCD of this type that did not show different shades - either darker or lighter or some offset of the color on the screen, such as a SLIGHTLY grayish white, when viewing at an angle.

When I tilt my device it shows a very slight differentiation, but this happens to all of the iPad 3s in the stores I visited. I even pointed this out to several of the workers and "geniuses" and they said it was nothing unusual. Many/most other electronics I have used with LCD screens show a tiny bit of color change when tilted or viewed from an angle. Even a new LCD TV will do this. It happens on the Samsung 24-inch brand new monitor I am typing on right now...

That said, it is VERY slight and something I do not consider a "flaw". When my camera (a crappy one, the iPad actually takes far better pictures) recharges I'll post some screenshots.

You are completely correct. But LCD viewing angles aren't what most people are complaining about here...

I agree that you can probably safely check your iPad for dead pixels in the store but
inspecting an iPad for backlight issues is pretty much impossible in an Apple store. Combination of lighting + glare of the screen...there is a reason why the Apple geniuses actually have to take your iPad into their backroom when people bring them in and complain about backlight issues.

::shrugs::

Does anyone have any information on if LG and Sharp have started supplying their display already to Apple for the New iPad. Early March, End of Feb the news was These two companies failed to meet Apple's Specification and hence were eliminated from the race. But lately again there is news that have ramped up and are now ready and have got a go ahead from Apple to start supplying the Retina Displays for the new iPad ! But has it already started happening ? Are the Retina Displays supplied by LG and Sharp already in production ? Do we have any new iPad unit which now has a LG or Sharp displays to it. When do you guys think if LG and Sharp have started supplying Display when is the earliest we could see a New iPad device with displays from these companies ?

One of my other Friend who also is a Tech Blogger was telling me this the other day in his observation Sharp Displays are to the perfect one which are free from Backlight Bleeding and No Tints on them whatsoever. So with Samsung we have the tint issues, LG we have Backlight Bleeding Problems looks like Sharp could be the key player in this.

How does he know who the LCD manufacturer is for the different iPads he has access to?

Well, if you recollect All the Early Displays of iPad-2 were made by LG which had a major Backlight Bleeding Problem last year but later on They had taken care of it. My Brother's iPhone 4S has a perfect screen snow white's no bleeding etc...etc...I also asked my friend the same question on what basis is his Rationale based on and he said after using different Apple devices where different Manufacturers screen was used and being in touch with a lot of users. Yes so looks like he did not have any concrete data as in devices which were earlier tested and than torn off to see who made their screen But based on personal experience and in the experience of his close friends and family :)

In that sense I feel barring the Backlight Bleeding issue which frankly I never faced in the iPad-2 I thought LG Displays were the best as far as iPad-2 is concerned their display was uniform no tints. Whites being snow white's so I really liked the display made by LG in iPad-2. So even I am waiting when will Apple's New iPad start having a LG display.

But again the problem is, how a user/buyer knows before buying or even afterwards who has made the display of this device unless it is completely dismantled ?

I've owned all 3 iPads and all on launch day. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them and am loving the iPad 3. The secret? Its just a piece of technology not some bloody work of art or priceless artifact. Its a mass produced electronic from China that is bound to have imperfections just by logic. The people on here that spend a sad amount of time dwelling on minor light leakage or little things are doing themselves a disservice. Just use the thing and move on with your lives. If you're not going to be satisfied until you have the perfect one you'll be waiting for ever.

But since we are all free to decide if the money is worth it to us then that's our choice and we should expect to get what we pay for. Don't get me wrong I've been a Mac user since before they became cool and indeed Apple has a deserved reputation for quality hardware. But I exchanged my iPad for another one because of the yellow tint issue. And Apple was happy to do so. If you are ok with justifying it and saying it's bound to have imperfections then that's your choice, but it isn't fair to criticize others for being more discerning.

When I moved to SoCal then i noticed most people I know had crappy wipers because they only used them once a year. I'm from the Midwest so I tend to notice those things and tell friends/family that their wiper blades are dried out.

People will quickly say its not the same thing but The iPad equivalent scenario is that many people don't initially use the iPad for photo editing, but once you do start importing photos with the CCC into iPhoto and do color correction then when you print/transfer your photos youll quickly find out that your screen is not producing the desired results. And that probably is far beyond your return period so being "coached" into noticing a problem isn't a bad thing.

The point is that just because you don't know your iPad has a flaw doesn't mean it isn't flawed. Also, check your tire pressure and wiper blades with every oil change.
