I always order a few as not sure of the color keep a few days them make a decision on what I will keep that's my choice why travel to a store when they can come to me if it was not financially viable for Apple they would find a way to stop this.

If some people are not happy I do this tough luck
Because the only thing to consider is financial? I’ve layed out several non-financial reasons why doing this is poor form.

I will judge.
If someone orders multiple iPhones with the intention to keep only the one they like best, I think it’s wasteful. I’ve seen posts where someone says they returned the blue one because it wasn’t quite the right shade of blue. Another said the new dessert color didn’t look premium enough. If the color is that important then look at them in person before ordering.
End judge.

Good for you, but other people will probably beg to differ. I always want to visit my Local Apple Store to take a look at the device in person, play around with it a bit before making a final decision, including the colour choice. And I am not alone.
Good for you for doing some research before making your purchase 🥰

I am not defending mfgs. or trying to protect their profits. I merely point out that this ridiculous behavior costs me $ since the mfg. will have to charge me extra $ to cover all these returns. That's what bothers me. And this is a phone for god's sake, not a lifetime commitment. Buy it, keep it, use it, and if THEN you don't like it get a different one next time. Do you guys return chewing gum that you have tried and don't like?

That's the main idea behind the 14-day no questions asked return policy. The consumer has the right to try the product, before deciding to keep it. The consumer rights come before the manufacturer's / seller's.

Talk to your regulators, so the manufacturers won't charge you for their problems.

As much as I can emphasize with buyers remorse hogging the order queue; it is part of the process.

Personally, I have no gripe if a person bought a phone and returned it because the chose the wrong configuration. It is what it is. They ordered, paid, and ordered it before others - it’s their right to have a change of heart.

We all want our tech the second we order it. I’ve ordered every device launch on the hour it is available to pre order, every year. I’ve come to appreciate reading people’s experiences if they get their device before me.

FWIW; my family’s order arrives on 10/4, the first year we slipped past launch date. I don’t mind being patient.

Honestly, I think the majority of people are too busy with their lives and jobs and other priorities to buy a phone just for clout on a message board. People change their mind and exchange, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I thought I wanted to downsize to the regular iPhone XS, but I missed the larger screen. Some people are chronically indecisive.

The amount of people I see on this forum ordering the latest iPhone and then returning within the return window is really frustrating. I would suggest it’s only so those doing it can take part in the pre-order/new release hype with no real intention of keeping the device. But it takes away a phone from someone else waiting during launch, not to the mention the environmental impact and administrative burden.

Has it bothered anyone else seeing this practice be mentioned on here?
If Apple would have actually done something new I don’t think this would be happening as much.
Usually you can get your hands on these.
But now there are so many to go around they can be returned, purchased rinse and repeat.

That says something about Apple not delivering a product people KNOW they want.
They delivered a product this time that is almost instantly forgettable.

Might not be a popular opinion here (I haven't looked at the responses yet) but I agree with you.

There are legitimate reasons to buy and return a product. That's why there's a return window. But some people buy with no intention of keeping the product. Some just want to play with it for a little bit. I've heard of people buying every colour just to see what they look like in person (that's what display models in stores are for!) but they only plan on keeping one.

It's wrong for all the reasons that you mentioned. It makes the product more scarce for people who actually want one to keep, and it wastes time and money, and has an environmental impact. One could argue that these things are negligible in the grand scheme of things, but waste is still waste.

Likely sold as new.
There's no way that they can sell it as new once the box has been opened. No matter how well they polish and repackage it, someone somewhere would have picked up on some clue that their "new" iPhone was previously owned, and Apple would be in crap once that got out.

It has not bothered me in the least bit.

Without a return policy, corporations would get away with alot

But some do mind & seemingly order an iPhone, that they have no intention of keeping, just so they can have a shiny new box to open on launch day. I must have been brought up differently, as I find it reprehensible, it goes completely against my own morals.

Well it’s not as though they’re chucking all these returned phones in a big old bonfire at Apple Park so everyone can roast marshmallows over them after work..

They actually do repurpose them as refurbs/replacements etc…

yeah but they also aren't teleported back to apple with a zero carbon foot print was my point.. all being shipped or driven back to an Apple Store etc and then shipped to the re purposing factory etc wherever that may be?

This is exactly it.

Some people will respond with the usual 'ill do what I want don't tell me what to do' - which is sadly far more common of an attitude with people nowadays.

And sure, don't shed a tear for Apple as they are the enablers here and their pricing structure more than compensates for this behaviour im sure. In fact if less people did this perhaps the phones would be cheaper.

The point of this thread is NOT criticising someone legitimately choosing to buy something they have every intention of wanting and keeping and for whatever reason find that it doesn't suit their purposes then send it back to apple...

No. Its people deliberately buying things, or multiple colours of things, just to open them, touch them, look at them, make a Youtube or TikTok or Instagram post on the subject, and then send it back.
This is wasteful, and utterly irresponsible when it comes to carbon footprint as the device has been packaged and shipped (twice) for no reason whatsoever when if you wanted to choose a colour or size you can do it from the Apple Store.

This generally happens on new product launch day - and to those who order 5 phones with the intention of keeping one are depriving 4 other people of the possibility of getting their launch day phone.
... "But I don't know what colour I want!!" - well go to the store if you are that indecisive. If you don't know for sure what colour to get then don't get it for launch day and wait to go and see them!

I am fascinated by these people's credit cards frankly. I mean, if I buy a £1200 iPhone then my credit card is already groaning and creaking at the seams...... how could I possibly buy 5 of them!? I cant!

Anyway people will vigorously defend their right to do whatever the hell they want and Apple are instrumental at enabling this behaviour so its not worth moaning about as it will continue until such time as Apple introduce a 2 per customer limit on purchases (as they have done in the past).

On an aside note, I would be fascinated to know how many Vision Pros were sent back in the 14 day return window. Obviously every Youtuber and their dog scrambled to get their hands on it for launch day and proceeded to make video after video for the next 2 weeks then send it back - even they had no intention whatsoever of keeping a £3500+ device. Its even more fascinating to see many of the YouTubers who actually kept their unit admit now that they barely use it anymore now the novelty has worn off - though that's a different subject altogether!

Exactly. This is the same attitude that smokers used to exhibit regarding their second-hand emissions. Many people refuse to consider, acknowledge, or care that their actions have consequences on others, the environment, and the general ethos. Sadly, this is only getting worse year over year.

Exactly. I would hope people would at least try to do basic research. If you are concerned about weight or color then go to a store to check it out first. Check out the reviews and features on the innumerable websites dedicated to that purpose. Before I bought my first ever Max I made cardboard cutouts the exact size of the Pro and Pro Max based on Apple’s specs. I could put the larger Max version in my pocket of a couple pair of shorts and jeans. It was faster than driving to a store. I definitely get that people have regret or it wasn’t what they expected for whatever reason. I’d just like to see effort put into some degree of research before buying.

Its usually indecisive people who can't decide on a particular size or colour and need to go through several combinations before they settle.
This was me with the watch! I ordered alum w/green band. decided i wanted alum w/milanese, so i ordered then cancelled the alum w/green.

then i decided i wanted ti w/milanese so ordered for ISPU, but they wouldn't let me cancel my delivery watch (even though it sat there in PTS until thursday!). so I had to return that one... however in the mean time i found out that the milanese was not made nearly as nice as the original and it's very sharp/rough/scratchy so had to return that and ended up with alum after all (cuz i was just mad by then!) with a blue band... BUT when i saw the blue in person.... i had to change the band for the nike speckled platinum! YIKES!

However the phone.... I knew this year i just wanted white since i was going pink/fuschia case.....

I've never ordered just because of FOMO! The last three years I just didn't order at all... kept my 13 (and bought a new 7 watch when the 8's came out for the blue band/black SS case)

I did this!

And fortunately the first year watches came out they had them in store ahead of time for try on!!!!! so I knew what size to get!
