Same issue here. Unplugged, replugged mains cable, nothing happened. Did it again, and unplugged/replugged USB cable and sound now fine again. Weird.

Ditto for me as well.

Spent an hour with AppleCare and even have an appointment to bring the ASD in for repair, then found this thread.

I had already unplugged the monitor and that did not even temporarily fix the problem. However, after seeing this thread, I unplugged the ASD WHILE it was active on my Studio. That resulted in the three "boot-up" dots appearing on the ASD. Once it came back online the audio is working again...at least for the moment.

So, I'm really glad I found this thread because schlepping my ASD to an Apple Store was not high on my list of things to do, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, I think it's safe to say this is neither a software nor hardware issue. It's firmware. Hopefully there will be an update to fix and I will be posting to the feedback link listed above.

Same here. Unplugging fixed. Issue Started today and have not had issue in past with ASD (have owned for months)

I had an issue that suddenly started last week where it'd play a few seconds of sound and then I'd get this du-dumpb noise and then silence. If I rotated audio sources it'd do the same thing repeatedly. Same result on two different machines.

Everyone's solution here of power cycling the monitor has solved the issue, for now.

There is a growing thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253811184?answerId=257594959022&login=true&page=1 about this problem. (The topic heading is misleading — the monitor is cutting out completely for those who have the problem, including the microphone, as most of the items in the thread note, and as discussed above.) The recent firmware update does not solve the problem. And indeed the fix, but perhaps just temporary, is to power cycle the monitor, waiting about a minute or so before restarting.

It would be good if this got some more publicity, so Apple takes notice.

Same here with the disappearing audio that would come on for a second or two then gone. Replugging in monitor solved it.

Quick update, unplugging both of my Studios Displays for 15 seconds did fix the problem. There is a lot of references to Logitech devices here. I can 100% confirm when I use my bluetooth Logitech MX Master 3 for Mac with my Mac Studio (with M1 max) it will NEVER fall asleep. I must turn off the mouse in order for the Mac Studio to sleep.

I've had the sound cut out on my Studio Display twice since receiving it. Both times I was using a Logitech device with my Mac Studio, connected via Bluetooth and via Logitech's Bolt technology. The issue doesn't seem to happen when using Apple peripherals connected via Bluetooth.

I use the same combo and don't have that sleep problem. Although, I am not using the Logi drivers, I use SteerMouse.

I think it has to do with the new Logi software. This drove me nuts for weeks until I figured it out. Even if I have my iPad connected to one of the monitors, it too (iPad) will not go to sleep. At first, I thought it was due to Logitech Flow feature because I had my work PC connected to the new MX Master 3S. It is fairly incredible to use one mouse for both a PC and Mac but I was force to shut that feature off. Anyhow, it just looks like Logitech doesn't play nice with Apple's M1 chips yet and this monitor sound thing is bizarre. I don't think the two are related.

This happened to me yesterday. First with Apple music then tried my own uploaded music and did the same. 3 to 4 seconds of music then dropped out. I tried everything then finally power cycled the monitor. Everything is good for now.

For reference I have no Logitech devices or drivers. I did not watch anything on Youtube. I have not downloaded any programs of any kind either. All Apple devices, keyboard, trackpad and magic mouse, Monitor was updated to 15.5 back in May when it came out.

I have, what I think, is the worst possible variation of this where audio AND video will not play on my Mac Studio Display until I unplug the Thunderbolt cable or the power cord.

This occurred after a month of using it with no problem, before and after the firmware 15.5 update.

At first it was just garbled audio from Youtube videos, then it became not loading or playing video or audio of any kind. As soon I unplug the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac Studio Display all the notification ping sounds, and any video I was playing beforehand will start playing in succession from the internal speaker of my Mac Studio computer.

When this occurs and audio/video will not play, volume and brightness controls won’t work either.

Happens at least once a day, and I even received a replacement Mac Studio Display which has the same issue. After dealing with Apple Support for the past month they have finally acknowledged the issue and are supposed to be working on an update.

To not have to deal with power cycling the display, I've just set the audio output to the Mac Studio's internal speaker.

I have the speaker issue but I am also not able to do video chatting via zoom because the microphone does not work.
It’s really hard to believe Apple has not released an update to fix this. It is failing for me on Ventura as well as my wife on Monterey.

I had this issue today too for the first time. I started a Teams chat, got around 3 seconds of sound, followed by a brief glitching noise, then silence.

Unplugging and re-plugging the power to my ASD seems to have resolved it.

I'm not using any Logitech stuff. Just a regular Apple magic mouse and Apple wireless keyboard with my Mac Studio Ultra

Same issue here I have had this happen about 3x. I have to unplug and restart the monitor for it to come back. This really needs to be adjusted. If this is a premium product as the price would suggest...the camera and the speakers, and mic should... I don't know..... work?

I've just experienced this issue. The problem does not go away with restarting the Mac, or unpluging the monitor. I tried unplugging the monitor from power too.

Had this issue today (28.07) and power cycle seems to have fixed the issue. Will keep an eye (ears) on it!

Had a weird issue today... Went to adjust the volume of my ASD, and the slider was grayed out with volume at 100%. Went to preferences and it said something to the effect sound adjustment wasn't possible. I switched to another sound device and then back to the ASD. This resolved it.

ASD definitely has some very sporadic quirks.

looks like ASD having same sound issue as thunderbolt display.
and apple never did/managed to solve it for years.

Those didn’t run iOS which allows them to easily fix software issues. Most of the time I think it’s overkill but having a software that can easily update might come in handy when more issues are discovered. I expect many of the issues reported so far to be addressed when iOS 16 comes out for the ASD.

How strange. The same thing happened to me today (8th July) too.
Was trying different videos/music and it kept cutting out audio after 3-4 seconds.
Switched audio output to Mac Studio then back to Studio Display and it would play again for 3-4 seconds and cut out.

Never happened before. Had to unplug 15 seconds and it seems fixed for now...

EDIT: Judging by others having this problem and a power cycle fixing it, I guess it's a software/firmware issue. I don't know how useful it may be but I submitted some info to Apple here under the display section and "report a problem". Might be worth doing if others experience it.
Thanks, I’ve reported it. Wierd it happened, but hasn’t happened since (touch wood!)
