Reported the issue to Apple. Been using my ASD since launch then yesterday, 29th July whilst watching a YouTube video I heard a glitch noise and the audio cut. Tried my other ASD that still worked normally, my primary display though would only give me exactly 4 seconds of audio before making the same glitch noise and then cutting out. Only way to solve was to power off.

Not using any Logitech devices. I did however today start using my keyboard to control volume I’d previously had my function keys set to behave like function keys and not to control the system settings.

Hope Apple fix soon. Using Monterey 12.5 And my monitors were updated to latest firmware straight after purchase.

Cheers

Was getting the same audio cut after 4 seconds on both monitors. I was able to resolve the issue by leaving both unplugged overnight.

I've got the same problem with my Studio Display and Mac Studio 12.4

Firmware update didn't work for me, but I may have a worse variation of the issue. Audio will just suddenly stop working and any associated video playback (local files, streaming, etc) won't play. When it happens F-key functionality for Brightness and Volume control and things like About this Mac, Restart and Shutdown are not responsive/severely delayed. Doesn't resolve itself until you unplug the Display either from power or Thunderbolt.

This is the second brand new Studio Display from Costco I've received that's had this issue.

What computer are you using with your Studio Display?

I'm using a base Mac Studio. The audio issue this firmware was to resolve was something I only experienced a handful of times, 99.7% of time (at least once day) audio and video playback will just stop working entirely with both Displays I've had.

Have been working with senior Apple advisors and forwarded several Capture Data logs for the past 3 months hoping for a fix, but the issue happened an hour after the firmware was installed. Can only use the Display as long as audio out isn't using its speakers.

Thank you genuinely for your feedback and I'm sorry you're experiencing all these headaches. I had an ASD on order and decided to cancel it a few days ago when all these sound issues came to light. I was hoping to get some feedback in the thread about Apple releasing a firmware update, but it's bloated with people bickering. I decided to cancel my order as I just wasn't confident Apple could really resolve this through firmware. Sounded like bs to me.

I hope the temporary solutions of unplugging/restarting works for people. I'll continue to monitor feedback on this. I desperately wanted an Apple made display but looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Yeah, I was hoping to find someone else in that thread with the same issue as me even after the firmware update.

To be clear, the issue the majority of people have reported is audio that becomes garbled, distorted or that cuts off. The most recent firmware update may have indeed fixed that, but it did not fix my audio issue where audio (and video playback) just stops working at least once a day until unplugged.

Experienced this with two different Apple Studio Displays sent between months of each other from Costco, and because of the extensive case history with this issue I’m going to see if Apple will send me a new replacement since another update for this exact issue may be quite a ways off (if at all). I’ll be sure to reply to your post again and let you know the results. It’s a really great display otherwise, but in hindsight I wish I just returned everything the first time.

While I'm still awaiting delivery of my Studio Displays, it sounds like those that have applied the firmware update have had their sound issues resolved. One user reported no improvement but was having sound issues even when the Studio Display wasn't connected, so I think their issue was something else entirely.

People running the Ventura beta aren't receiving the firmware update reportedly, which I guess makes sense since updating firmware on an expensive piece of hardware may not be something you want to do while running a beta version of an OS. It's something that will probably keep me off the beta for now.

Wonder what kind of sound issues they had if the Studio Display wasn't connected? I couldn't find anyone else in these threads, aside from myself, where the firmware did not resolve their audio issue.

Yeah, I don't remember exactly in which thread I read it, but some user was saying he had audio issues on his MBP ever since he connected an ASD that persisted even when it was disconnected. 🤷‍♂️

But for everyone else, I've read it fixes the problems.

Mine are due to arrive tomorrow. Hopefully updating both goes well.

The positive feedback is encouraging. I hope the firmware updates continue to work for everyone who is experiencing issues. I still want a Studio Display so will continue to monitor feedback. Thanks to everyone for reporting back.

My two ASDs were delivered yesterday. So far no issues with brief use of the speakers. My Mac hasn't yet updated the displays to the most recent firmware, however, so hopefully whenever it decides to do so, all goes well. Software Update says I'm up to date, but System Profiler shows older firmware on the displays (which makes sense as they were en route when the most recent update came out).

Yesterday (9 August) the first Studio Display (VESA mount) arrived. My 2019 16" Intel MBPro 64GB/8TB with macOS Monterey 12.5 was the computer I used to setup the Studio Display. There was nothing else plugged into either the computer or the Display. The computer got its power from the Apple USB-C cable supplied with and plugged into the monitor.

I followed the "How to Check & Update Your Apple Studio Display's Firmware" Tim Hardwick written 22MAR22. I found I had version 15.4 firmware in the monitor. It took about 45 seconds for the download of the update package. I clicked the link and it took just five minutes for the complete update to happen and have both the computer and monitor reboot and come to live with 15.5 installed in the Studio Display.

The second Studio Display (VESA mount) arrived the next day. I had it mounted in fifteen minutes and used the same computer with just the new monitor attached. The download took about 45 seconds. I paid attention when I asked for the install of the update. It took about 35 seconds before the monitor had the three dots showing and at the five minute mark the update was completed.

I need to tweak the left monitor horizontal attitude but both work fine now plugged into my 14" MBPro Max 64GB\4TB. One monitor is plugged into one of two ports on the left side and the other is plugged into the solo port on the right side. I have the Apple keyboard connected to the left monitor and a wifi mouse with the screen of the laptop closed.

The only issue is only one monitor can create music at a time so I am researching how to get sound out of both of them. My alternate is to use my Bose sound system with excellent sound and a huge sub-woofer. I was listening to Enya as there are great highs and lows to test the Studio speakers.

I get to cooll my heels until 11 October when the ordered Mac M1 Ultra 128GB/8TB gets to the local Apple Store.

I've had my ASD for a couple of months and have loved it. Never had any issues with audio until this morning. Multiple times the audio in apps goes into a repeat loop of the last half second of sound and the app crashes, forcing me to do a restart on my Mac. One time, I couldn't get into the sound pane in preferences. I've unplugged the monitor for a bit multiple times and have done restarts on my 2022 MBP 14". This is really frustrating and makes the ASD unusable. I updated the firmware last week. Again, this morning was the first time I've had this issue but it's happening repeatedly. Would love any advice. I'll try leaving it unplugged for a longer period of time too.

I think I figured this out and should have realized this earlier. I got a Backbone One (Playstation Edition) yesterday, which is a new game controller that connects via USB, and tried using it this morning. Of course, I plugged it into a USB port on the ASD and had it plugged in for awhile. It's been unplugged now for a few hours (also left the ASD unplugged for about a half hour) and everything is working fine. Thus, I think this may be a USB issue of some sort. I wonder if other people have similar issues.

And this is after the update from last week? Yikes.

I've experienced this with my ASD quite a few times, where something I was watching just freezes and the last half second of audio just loops continuously until you unplug the display. Also, the issue with Sound settings sounds similar to what I've experienced where sometimes checking out Display in System Preferences won't open. Btw did you purchase your display directly from Apple?

Nothing to suggest (the only solution is to unplug the Display from power each time), other than calling Apple and trying to get to Tier 2 support and build a case which hopefully leads to an update, it's what I'm doing since the update never fixed my audio issue.

See my update above. Do you have any devices plugged into the USB ports on the ASD? Looks like my game controller was the culprit.

No, originally I had an external hdd connected but after having to unplug the Display nearly once a day I no longer use the USB C ports.

If the issue comes back, please update here. I should also mention that if it IS an audio issue, and you want to avoid having to unplug the Display then the only option is setting your audio output to anything but the Studio Display's Speakers like the MacBook you're using.

Right, well that would be a terrible solution! I bought this, in part, for the speakers, which are excellent. The good news is that this probably is a software issue.
