I think Evdawg means something else, but as for me, my unit had bad uniformity even visible from straight on which is why I am returning it. I first thought i was just dealing with viewing angles but turns out it wasnt just viewing angle dependend, although stronger viewing angles made worse and made it stand out even more. Essentially the right 1/3 of the display was more greenish/darker. From very far away, about 3 feet, It was not barely visible but anything closer like 2 feet caused it was visible quite clearly. In even stronger viewing angles like on the picture you can see it very clearly:

Going to pick up annother one tomorrow. If its not better I fear its considered normal (which would be very dissapointing for a display of that price). Other than that I love the display.
Feels like the iPhone 17 Pro/Max screen lottery conversation that's been going on in the forums. 🙂

Ehh, there's lotteries, and then there's defects and I'd argue the green tint falls into the latter category. Especially given the price of these displays, they really ought to be as perfect as they can be (barring limitations of the actual display tech).
Oh I agree. I got a chuckle, flashback, with the pics and comments.

Interesting. I tried that, but it didn't help. But, I couldn't replicate the problem when hooked up to the new MacBook Air M5. It would only happen with my Studio M4 Max.
I tried this with my M4 Max Mac Studio and I didn't have any issues. I used the TB5 cable that came with the display.

I'm now on my second Studio Display XDR. I'm running on M2 Max MacBook Pro w/ 38gpu. The first monitor I had 3 kernel panic crashes after any HDR playback or any heavier graphics tasks at 120hz. The second monitor has crashed only once and it seems it's been handling the 120hz better. I will say that my computer is running hotter and the fan is running a lot more prior to owning this monitor. Hopefully this is all ironed out in a software update.

Also I have a Eizo 4k 2700x and it's way more even in terms of uniformity and viewing angles. I feel like the ASD XDR is beautiful but you need to be looking directly at it. From angles it's not all that great bc as some of mentioned the slight green hues at the edges is true.

I am also having the kernel panic. I use the display on an M2 Max MacBook Pro. Initial display was replaced at Apple Store, second one is still crashing. Set at fixed 120Hz now, hasn't crashed so far. On the line with Apple now to see if they can submit a ticket and perhaps help push an update quicker.

Just hung up with Senior Support at Apple. They are aware of the issue and working on the fix, with no estimated repair time. At this point, they recommend setting the Hz to a fixed 60 or 120. That's it guys, nothing else but wait.
Any chance you have two of them and are also experiencing problems connecting both to your MBP? I can’t get my 2 XDR’s to connect to my MacBook Air m4 and I’m hoping it’s just a software fix that will fix it negotiating down to 60Hz.

Glad to hear they are aware of the issues though.

I just have the one, I'm sorry.

It can't output 2000 nits sustained, it is peak at ~40% screen area, ment for HDR higlights.
Also in SDR/ OS UI. default max brigjtness is 600 nits, and under flashlight, sun, or something pointed at ligjt sensor it can go to 1000.

And from all features this thing has, first thing is to install vivid and see how bright you can overclock it, why, to use it at the beach? ☹️

Ah, this explains why they looked the same brightness at the Apple Store when I was just looking at the desktop… they were both running at 600 nits I guess. Glad to know my eyes were not deceiving me!

So, beyond the crashing, which others have reported as well...

Does anyone else have horrible motion blur / ghosting? It is really really bad. Way worse than my original Studio Display. Scrolling text looks like a 30 Hz display or worse.

Also, it is noticeably dimmer than my Studio Display, except for HDR content (which looks amazing other than the motion blur) Auto brightness makes it completely unusable. It is like it is always about half the brightness I would expect.

Does anyone know what the deal is with requiring ctrl- to be pressed in order to adjust the brightness?

Overall, this is a major disappointment so far.

Long story short. Went to the Apple Store. SD XDR looks great, but ... tiny - like a 24" monitor. So if I want a 30" 5K or 6K monitor for photography, here's my problem. Lots of non-Apple products look terrific when new, but their integration to Apple OS and Hardware degrades over time. This is most of what keeps me from looking at non-Apple monitors. I suspect Eizo is good at maintaining compatibility. But do any other monitor makers work reliably over the long term?

Monitors now need dedicated processors, I guess to handle scaling and inverting the monitor characteristics so that they can send "what signal to my little LED's will generate the desired final image". Will other monitors continue to handle that interface gracefully?

I understand that this is asking about the future, and so is an unknown. But who has a good track record in this regard?

Dumb monitors will stay dumb. Their quality may differ vs Apple, but they don’t degrade or lose compatibility. They’ll keep working as long as the ports still exist on new computers.

What makes you say that?

ASD has an iPhone chip in it, to process the camera and perhaps the local dimming algorithm and speaker output. Other displays and TVs have image processing chips too and to make them so-called smart TVs.
