This thread will be nothing but complaints yet the game will be a huge success despite those cries.

It may be an issue for some here but for the 99% of those that download games, they won't even notice and won't care.

They will leave terrible reviews, and then likely the game will have mixed reviews at launch (2-4 star range) which might effect its revenue, at which point they will likely release a fix to allow offline play. As many here have said, a large majority of people live in cities and use subways, planes, etc. These people will get frustrated

Well that sucks! The only time I get to play is on the bus commuting. I don't have a data plan either. I bet the data connection is to gather data!

I would imagine a game as hyped as this will be pirated like crazy! Most people who use copied games probably wouldn't buy it anyway. Game devs always say "We sold 100 million games. 50 million were pirated. We lost 1 billion in profits".

99% probably wouldn't have bought it anyway! They would have just pirated another game. I know that from the C64, Amiga, even SNES copied games days.

The same for this game!

Oh well, 3DS on the bus then! Don't need a data connection! and I have proper mario games!

Yes, because piracy is rampant on iOS.

Nintendo is going to end up like RIM if they keep this up. Their consoles are not that good anymore and seem more like gimmicks than anything. So resistant to move FORWARD all for the sake of fear.

No they're not lol, and it's your personal opinion that their 'consoles are not that good anymore'.

The Wii, DS and 3DS have sold extremely, extremely well. The mantra repeated on here that they must give up hardware and solely develop for phones is incorrect and laughable tbh lol.

I would agree with you if piracy wasn't so rampant.

But since it is, I completely agree with Nintendo. Why should I pay $10 for a game, while someone else gets it for free?

Because if you're giving them money, they should trust you, instead of crippling the game's functionality just in case you are a naughty pirate.

Didn't... Didn't the Nintendo representative literally give the example of playing the game one-handed on an underground train whilst holding on to the hand rail with the other at the iPhone keynote..?
he obviously had a data connection :)

I think they lose more money trying to stop piracy than the amount of money they lose because of it.

I wouldn't bet on that.

If they DO find sales lagging, and they feel it is because of the online requirement, they can just drop the online requirement to boost sales.

This is stupid. I don't mind if a game wanted to check in over the Internet once a week or once every two weeks to verify it's not a pirated copy but to not be able to play it at all without an Internet connection for this kind of game is just plain dumb. They aren't getting my money for a crippled game.

Don't care. I don't travel on planes (maybe once every few years), don't have anything underground as far as mass transit. Houston is pretty much covered with coverage. Maybe an elevator or the tunnels downtown, but I am not there either. I'm still buying this.

A large majority? Citation of your statistic that supports your declaration that the majority of potential users not only live in cities but also would only play this game while commuting on mass transit please?

Unfortunate, even though I can see the reasoning behind this. However I think they should eventually figure out how to make some game modes accessible offline in a future update or something.

I wouldn't bet on that.

If they DO find sales lagging, and they feel it is because of the online requirement, they can just drop the online requirement to boost sales.

Your argument makes no sense to me.

They need to require an always-on connection to prevent losing sales to piracy?
Oh, but if they feel they lose sales due to the always-on requirement, they can drop it to boost sales?

Wut? o_O Which is it?

And how do you propose they win back people like me who will just forget the whole thing now it's been soured by this decision? They'd have to reverse course on the always-on connection and drop the price now for me to possibly be interested again, because they have offended me, essentially calling me a potential pirate and expecting me to give them money. They don't have an automatic right to my custom if and when they dein to stop accusing me of piracy.

They really don't want my money then. As much as I wanted to play this game, I'm not always around an internet connection. There needs to be an offline mode.

What's funny is the pirates will crack the DRM so they will have a better user experience than the people who paid for it.

No - the game saves itself through a connection to Nintendo's servers. It also loads levels through a connection to Nintendo's servers. Both can't happen if the pirates simply stop the 'phone home' aspect of the game.

Everyone pretending to be outraged and says they're no longer going to buy it, is lying. It's CoD MW2 boycott over again. Get over it.

Good luck, Nintendo. They already screwed up their next console launch by not having the new Zelda done in done in time and won't sell any at all now.

NES didn't have Zelda as a launch title.
SNES didn't have Zelda as a launch title.
N64 didn't have Zelda as a launch title.
Gamecube didn't have Zelda as a launch title.
Wii did have Zelda (Twilight Princess) as a launch title.
WiiU didn't have Zelda as a launch title.

Having Zelda as a launch title doesn't seem to be a huge concern for Nintendo, and never really was.
