Why did you think I suggest there will be an updated iOS 4 (4.3?) that will allow iOS to support resolutions beyond 1024x768? 1280x768 is perfect since it allows for true native display of 720p high definition video downloaded through the iTunes Store.

Yes, it would be lovely, it just means developers (games will be the worst) would have to design two lots of bitmapped graphics for both types of display

I'm just hoping they will release a 7" iPad.

The only reason why I didn't buy an iPad is because it is too large. What's the point of having an iPad if I have to carry it in a laptop bag that fits my 13" MacBook Pro as well?

Agreed. Every time I look at that Kindle, I'm thinking "mm that seems about right for the hand "

My family has a couple of iPads in the house so I'm speaking firsthand when I say they feel little 'off' with the size factor - to me.

I hope Apple forgoes a rear camera altogether and shrinks the unit down a bit with rev1, of course upping memory and speeds and functionality as always :p

Any smaller screen and the iPad would loose a lot of it's appeal for me. The Kindle screen is to small to use reading magazines full screen (the iPad is just big enough for Autosport for example) and the extra space is great for browsing/Pages.

The Kindle is really great if you are reading a novel and the perfect size but I use my iPad for way more and the extra screen size I find really useful.

I am not saying the kindle is to small in fact if I wanted just a book reader the kindle is a better size/weight combo IHMO but for an all round device I think the extra screen size is a big win (for me at least).

Right after Thanksgiving, I'll eBay my 64 gig WiFi and then sit tight for the iPad 2's release.

Thanksgiving is on November 25th this year, and if Apple releases the 2nd gen iPad on the first Saturday of April like they did this year, that will be April 2nd, 2011.

That will leave you sitting tight without an iPad for 128 days or just over a third of a year.

Likely a good strategy to get the best price on your used iPad before Xmas, if you can handle the gap.

I wonder what extra's it's going to offer.

If it's not high-res, what else could there be? I'm guessing:

  • More RAM (512MB), almost for sure
  • Gyro (badly needed anyway)
  • Front cam (also pretty sure)
  • Back cam maybe, though I personally couldn't care less
  • Speed bump / battery life
  • Maybe a smaller form factor option, like 7"

I can't think of much more, and it all sounds very bland. I'll probably end up skipping the 2.0 altogether. I'm discounting the high-res option altogether by the way. Don't see it happen (although 1280x960 maybe but I don't think they'll want to bother developers with another resolution unless they go 2x all the way).

GPS chip in the wifi version would be great :)

That is the best suggestion I have seen :)

I don't know if Apple want to do that as currently it is one of the major reasons to buy the 3G (even if you don't enable the SIM contract).

Understood, and I respect what you're saying.

Given the choice, I would vote for a smaller version.

Perhaps we'll both be happy with the next announcement ~ dual versions, similar to iPods of various sizes?

You heard it here first folks: iPad Mini :apple:, coming this winter! :D

This is why you never buy a first gen of anything. No one ever listens to reason though, less than a year later and there will be a much more feature rich ipad out. Not to mention little tweaks that fix bugs that all the 1g owners will just have to deal with.

I agree sometimes the first gen is the buggy one (and I have had a few experiences of first gen not being perfect in the past) but sometimes the revolutionary leap means that you just get to enjoy using something 12 months before the wait and see crowd. The first gen iPod is an example it did not have the features of later iPods but I had 5GB of music in my pocket when everyone else had CD MP3 players or small 32MB memory stick players.

For example my girlfriend still has her first gen iPhone and is happy with it today (she does have an iPad which has removed the need for speed). I know the iPad 2 will be better than the iPad it's swings and roundabouts. Their is always another model coming in 12 months so you just have to weigh up the pro's and cons.

The other way of looking at it is the iPad is new technology and with new tech you could argue usually the 2G version is usually a boosted version of the same device which is then given a major technological overall (new CPU etc) for version 3. If this is the case you could say buying version 1 and getting 2 years out of it before version 3 comes along might be a better choice.

I am not disagreeing with your point that first gen carries more risk than later generations but you also have the chance to experience a great device while everyone else waits. Whether you get burnt or get to use something really brilliant earlier than most people depends on the device. For the iPhone and iPad I have to say for me it has been a good journey being an early adopter with a first gen device.

Excellent point, edddeduck - - I think mikes70mustang should listen to reason and wait for the third generation iPad in 2012.

I'm only waiting so I can pay cash. I hate using a credit card for something like this (or anything these days). Maybe I can get a nice used one with 3G next month. :D

I own a 1st gen iPad and I have no regrets. I've enjoyed all my months of using it since I got it last May. And before I got one, it did cross my mind about how the 2nd gen could potentially be much much better than the 1st gen. I did in fact have a first hand experience with this situation with my 1st gen iPod Touch; however, it's worth mentioning that as of today my 1st gen iPod Touch is still very much functional and not technically behind on the essential features. And it's been so many years already. I think I'll really only be feeling the effects in a year or so, when a big majority of the apps have already been updated to run at iOS 4.0 at minimum.

Exactly zero. Yields of large retina displays would be very low, making the iPad's price over $2000. Power consumption would result in about one hour of battery life, but that would be spread over dozens of reboots because it would overheat and shut down after about one minute. You really, really don't want a 2048x1536 iPad with current technology. Wait several years. I'm hoping the 2012 iPad will be 1280x960.

Well, maybe, but this looks like a step in the right direction: a 6.6-inch 302ppi display from Hitachi:
