I have a first gen 3G, and I won't upgrade unless there are significant improvements in the processor speed and RAM and pen input is implemented. I know the latter is a pipe dream, but what is life without dreams.

Cameras would be cool, but I would never use facetime and I can't imagine myself shooting many videos or pictures with an iPad. Although I guess it could be nice to have.

If Apple redesigns the look to be even more sexy, that might also prompt an upgrade.

As it stands though, I'm very happy with my current iPad and don't think it has many shortcomings other than the inability to play flash videos. Mostly because it limits Youtube.

I also hope they don't 'upgrade' it to a widescreen panel. One of my favorite parts about the iPad is the screen dimensions. Really smart move to go 4x3.

Will not be upgrading unless there is a retina iPad display, ie 4 times the pixels. More RAM is nice but it should of come with 512MB to begin with

Front facing camera? Who cares :D I have an iphone 4 for facetime.

Gyroscope? Pure novelty, not worth an upgrade at all.

Epic fail. That's so typical of Apple--look, no USB, no firewire, no physical keyboard, no HDMI, screen is so small and the resolution is only 1280 picopixels, no wireless transporter connection. Apple is doomed even in the 23rd century.

I never understood why there wasn't a front-facing camera on the ipad to begin with. It seems like it would be one of the most obvious features for an ipad. They're perfect for video chat

I agree with you because what you are saying makes sense, but you also have to look at it in a different way. First, this is Apple's first take on a tablet-style computer, spending a lot of money and packing a ton of features on a product with no guarantee of being successful could be a fail for Apple as it's been a fail for every other company that's produced a tablet PC.
Secondly, packing too many features on the first model to hit the streets will make it difficult for the future revisions because unless technology moves fast enough there won't be much to add to the future models and sales could plummet.
Sure, they could've added a camera but Facetime wasn't intro'd yet and snapping stills with a big 9.7" screen handheld like the iPad is kinda clunky. At the end of the day, from a business standpoint it doesn't make sense to offer too much too soon.

I just think it's too early to expect very much.

It's just going to be a few tweaks, polishing off any rough edges, facetime and memory to bring it in line with the iPhone.

I just feel it's too early to expect any major overhaul

Battery tech won't have moved on much and even if there is a CPU tweak I'd guess it would only be a very minimal one.

iPad v3 could be the overhaul model

Steve hates us all these days. Too busy occupied making his shareholders happy and not his customers.

Exactly, and that's why he gave out free bumpers for the iPhone 4 for his customers to make them happy when they whined like babies stomping their feet about it. :p

Great! So don't spend you're money mate... save it for something else :D:D

Two BIG reasons... first, first generation of anything is crippled (I still love mine, but it's a fact that early adopters take a hit on features).

The Second (and the real reason if you think about it) is because it would've preempted the FACETIME feature from the iPhone 4. That was NOT going to happen. Offering FT on the iPad and then offering it on the iPhone 4 a few months later would've been a big yawn (just as it was just "kinda cool" on the iPod touch).

iPad 2 will have probably slightly higher resolution (and that's iffy), front & rear cameras, an A9 chip, 1GB ram and be thinner, lighter and more magical -- and I'll buy it.

What are our chances of getting an amazing 2048x1536 display, I wonder...
No chance in hell.

Because this is and always was their ripoff strategy. They know exactly that there are enough idiots who will buy the current model and also the next model in 2011. Do you really believe they could not have built in this ******** camera in the current ipad? That's :apple:

I was tempted to grab the dev preview but I'm not developing anything for iPad and I'm afraid of bugs since I use my iPad ALL the time. Have you noticed any bugs with the dev preview?

4.2 is fairly polished, as developer betas go. I haven't noticed any bugs worth mentioning.

I don't see how Apple would even consider changing the screen format at this stage. Whoever thinks they are is simply deluding himself. The screen format we have now is an absolutely best compromise to enable reading and watching videos.

Like you, I would love to have a good pen input on the device, but SJ won't do it. I'm not sure if it's an ego thing (since he killed Newton) or he simply doesn't want the word Newton and iPad even mentioned in the same paragraph or article. But yes, Apple has some excellent pen input technology from that platform that could be used here. It is no one's but our loss, unfortunately.

I do look forward to the new iPad and will likely upgrade mine. The camera and extra RAM itself would most likely make it worth it to me.

Damn it.My head is about to explode.I was close to purchasing a new ipad ,then this.Steve hates me.:(

Go buy one now! When the new one comes out, put it on eBay, sell it for near purchase price (as Apple products allow), and buy the new version. Think of the difference as rental charge for your iPad v1. It's a no-brainer.

This is the plan I put into effect.

???...

Didnt the iPad tear downs reveal perfect spacing for iSight/equivalent camera COTS hardware? As if to say "Hmm, lets hold off on the front facing camera until the next gen". This kind of product evolution is so dirty. Its criminal feature rationing...all to get hard working consumers to spend more. Shame :apple:

PS: who ever said Apple kept the front facing camera out of the first gen to keep it at $499.00 is smoking crack. The A4 processor costs them $10.75 for heaven's sake...

Wow, smart move on Apple. If people is expecting iPad 2 will come out in the 1st Qt of 2011, how many will buy them from HP, Samsung etc... when they come out at end of year? :D

Or,

Wow, dumb move on Apple, If people are expecting iPad 2 will come out in the 1st Qt of 2011, how many will buy iPad 1 for Christmas?

I know I would not spend $500, $600 on an item that's being superseded in 3 months time.

I could see a LOT of people holding off a Christmas iPad v1 purchase.

I would like to buy someone a iPad as a gift for Christmas, but no way will I buy one with the new model out just after.

Also, how will the thousands? of new owners feel when just 12 to 16 weeks after getting their new gift that it's devalued and replaced by a better model?

They will either cheer over the fact that they can buy a new and better device (give the old one to the wife), or they will lash out on Apple in buyer's remorse.

I imagine the latter case will sound something like this : "Thanks alot Apple! I have been a smug, pretentious and elitist macfag since 1984 and really thought I would have the newest and flashiest device for AT LEAST six months when I bought this iPad, but now I will never buy another Apple product again!"

LOL. Then order a 2nd Gen and place their Gen 1 on ebay. :apple:

One reason. at&t. They simply did not have the ability to do face time on the Pad and Phone. Don't listen to all the other BS reasons. One year to build out another 10 billion in capacity=iPad with Face Time. Simple.

The real question will be in Jan and if at&t maintains exclusivity on the iPad.

Lot's of people don't need Face Time. I waited for the new version for video chats not Face Time. Face Time is useless to me without a Win7 version.

Makes you wonder does it not.

Seeing as a LOT of early iPads were sold to "risk takers" or "gadget freaks" who just wanted to play with a new invention.

By their very nature, they have money to play with (not a NEEDED purchase)

I wonder how flooded the 2nd hand market is going to be?

Either iPad Mk1's are going to end up with another family member, or there is going to be a scramble to sell fast before the new model comes out and the price of the old one drops.
