I think all this talk about adapters is missing the potentially worse issue: not being able to charge while listening to music. My most common use case is listening to music in the car, and I have to charge my phone at the same time. Sure, maybe I'll eventually have a car with CarPlay that will seamlessly integrate my iPhone with blue tooth, but I don't have that yet. :(

In fact, now that I stop to think about it, my music listening use cases from my iPhone all revolve around times when it's charging.

Good grief, there is no technological solution to your issue..... None at all... (sic) Or maybe there is....

Apple's 1 year old lightning port spec for third party accessories talks about passthrough on this port.
So, no issue at all.

I'm almost sure the iPhone 7 will come with a new version of earpods with lightning conector, but lets wait and see what happend. At the moment I'm not really happy about this.

Yes, preemptively unhappy, that's the MacRumors way...

iPhone is the first step, iPods and Macs will come later.

There is a thing in design. If you have to sacryfice function in order to get a better shape, you are doing it wrong. And Apple lately is taking very poor design decisions.

Removing the 3,5 jack is not going to give you less weight or significant more space... also as robstevo said there are other phones with waterproof that have the jack conector... so there is not real point of doing this, well there is one:

People fool themselves with "is the future", but it's not. They only do that so you have to buy jack to lightning adapter if you want to use your music headphones - speakers. Also you could buy their exclusive headphones with lightning conector, but they will only work on Apple devices unless you buy them another adapter lightning to jack. And they will probably have low quality so you have to replace them every year or so.

That's how Apple works and that's how they get the 1st of the top $ enterprises of the world.

I'd probably make any forthcoming Mac have a Lightning port as well as phone jacks. This would be a clear statement of direction. Then it could be done on iPhones etc at a later date. That way the great unwashed won't get their knickers in so much of a twist.

all i can see is people with beautiful iPhones with adapter dongles dangling out of them. IT IS A BAD IDEA. people use headphones on iPhones etc more often than anything else.

Personally I totally don't mind.
I don't have expensive headsets and use the standard earbuds all the time.

For work this can get annoying. If i need a headset in any company they will give the standard plug. Lightning connector will never become an industry standard.

One thing I've not seen yet is how then to use these new lightning headphones on another device?

I own a pair of B&W P5 S2's. I don't just use them on my iPhone. I also use them on my 2014 MBP, my Dell Windows laptop I use at work, and also on the plane.

Let's say those headphones were lightning headphones. How would I connect them to my work laptop? Or even my MBP? I'd need yet another sodding adapter.

The whole thing is a complete piss-take on Apple's part and it's all about making money and locking more and more into the Apple ecosystem.

I really do hope this rumour is a complete fabrication as I will eventually end up abandoning Apple over time which is a huge shame considering the huge investment I've made into their products.

And bluetooth is a VERY clunky technology, particularly with the one to one exclusive connection problem. It is no fun to wait and try to make bluetooth connections from one device to another.

Yeah, it's really annoying on a few of them. Disconnect, unpair, pair etc... some are fine others have issues.

I don't want to go back to the time were we had to have the original manufacturer headphones, because there were no 3,5 jacks in phones (pre iPhone).

**** it. If that happens, iPhone 6 will be my last iPhone. Period.

The phone is already plenty small. I'd rather they use the extra space to hold more battery.

It's really not, it's far too wide and tall. Case in point, the 6+, it's embarrassingly big.

I'm all for bigger screens but I'm dead against even bigger housing.

Your post makes no sense. You say Apple is doing this to increase profits yet you also say the 6S will be your last iPhone. How does Apple increase profits if people stop buying iPhones?

cause I have spent a lot of money on headphones . The average user has not .

I don't see the connection between people who live in the audiophile world changing phones phones based on the jack, and Apple making profit. We are a minority. A new connector = profit, from liscence and adapters ...

Apple stopped caring about professionals and niche segments a long time ago, current products are aimed at the masses.

And Bluetooth audio sucks. Bought a B&O H8 hoping I could transition to wireless, big difference wired.

Apple will remove it and you'll adapt. Simple. Not saying I agree with their decision, but I'll be just fine if they remove the 3.5mm jack.

99% of people fake outraged right now will purchase the jack-less iPhone. Fact.
I don't know if it is reasonable to accuse people of fake outrage. It's probably the "anger" stage of grief. What it will come down for those people is the inevitable acceptance of whatever Apple does... they ultimately come to the conclusions, "where else am I going to go?"

As time goes by, customers get MORE invested in the iOS ecosystem. The more they're invested, the less likely it becomes that they'll leave.

Apple knows this.

Easy, just buy two pairs of your favourite B&W P5 S2's, one with a 3.5mm plug and one with Lightning. ;)

Joking aside, these Sony headphones come with cables for Lightning, 3.5mm, Walkman, Xperia and USB so you can get by with one set of headphones.

I just need Shure to make a new set of lightning headphone cables so I can snap on my IEMs onto them.

Isn't it time Apple decided whether USB-C or Lightning is the future? I'd say this was already necessary but if everyone needs to buy new headphones then surely now is the moment. Odd that they used USB-C for the new MacBook Air but nothing else as yet.

Again, the adapter is the minor of two issues. Not being able to charge the phone while listening to music is a HUGE issue. In my case, most of the time I would listen to music from my iPhone is in the car, while I'm charging it for the day. And we all know by now that Apple's not going to extend battery life if it means it could use less battery space instead.
Do we know that you wouldn't be able to charge while listening? And I don't know what you're last sentence means. How is getting rid of the headphone jack taking away battery space. If anything Apple may be trying to get back space lost when they added the Taptic Engine to the phone.

3.5mm = universal
lighting audio = proprietary
Bluetooth = worse and expensive and not compatible with non bluetooth headphones.

Using an adapter would also be a problem if you had it on your 3.5mm headphones and then needed to plug those into another device.

Man this sucks balls.

People also complained when Apple removed the optical disk drive. I sure don't miss mine...

I celebrate its absence - I've had several slimline optical drives fail after a year or so (in Macs, PC laptops and homebrew projects) - getting points of failure out of laptops and mobiles is a Good Thing.

Likewise, the headphone jack in iDevices is a weak point, whereas Lightning plugs & sockets have been designed to bear weight.

However, Apple should absolutely be ungreedy and stick an adapter in the box. Most people are going to want this.

Remember when everyone complained about the Lightning Connector? Now everyone loves it.

I'm sure no one will miss the 3.5mm headphone jack in 2-3 years.

I don't believe this is the case. Unlike the Apple 30 pin connector the 3.5 mm headphone jack is a standard across many devices. The 30 pin and lightning connectors are proprietary Apple technology. Removing the 3.5 mm jack means a standard headset will no longer work without additional hardware (adapter). The move from 30 pin to lightning simply meant swapping one proprietary cable for another. While this was an inconvenience people were already used to having separate charging cables for Apple and non-Apple devices. Now we need separate or wireless headsets as well? This is not a good move. Especially since I just got a $100 Shure headset for Christmas!

Most serious high end earphones have detachable cables, it will be only a matter of changing the cable for most of us.

For the rest there will be included EarPods, so i don't see the issue.

maybe in 2-3 years...but this is a little different. It's removing a jack, not replacing it with something different such as the dock to lightning switch. They didn't completely remove a port, they just replaced it with something else that has the same function. I highly doubt there is going to dual lightning connectors.
