Sorry but how would an adapter work? Does lightning port support analogue audio? As far as I know, it does not. So the adapter needs to have a DAC and a small amplifier inside, not a simple 3.5mm to lightning switch.

HELL no. I would be PISSED. I only listen to music in my car through AUX cord so this would make me INSTANTLY switch from iPhone. The only way I wouldn't mind much is if they came out with a lightning to aux adaptor which would still be pretty annoying considering you can't charge at the same time. I don't see them making this mistake, though. If they did I think this would be 1 too many straws in the hat with bad design choices.

There are hundreds of cheap Bluetooth->aux car adapters that you can get in Amazon...

Any audiophiles here...is there any benefit whatsoever to Lightning earbuds, like in terms of sound quality?
The sound quality will totally depend then on the external DAC converter and the earphones. Previously the DAC converter inside your iPhones are actually quite good.

So while at first glance removing the analog audio jack sounds like progress to some because of the buzz word 'digital' (especially in conjunction with replacing 'analog') - in terms of features Apple would most likely remove the quality of the built in DAC (you still need a converter for Digital to Analog signals to drive the speakers) - and given apple history probably charge you more.

But for earphones connected via the Lightning port you need a DAC. If you have a good DAC + good earphones = sound quality is good

The Lightning port per se does absolutely nothing to audio quality.

Are you kidding me? Am I the only one who charges his phone while at the same time watching videos or music? I AM LITERALLY DOING THAT RIGHT NOW AS I TYPE THIS!

Most days I do school in the morning, I'll watch Youtube or play a game during lunch while charging it to get it back to 50-60%, then I do more school until dinner with more charging so it doesn't die while watching videos, a little more school, and finally maybe an hour or so before bed watching Netflix or the whatever with my phone charging so it doesn't die.
Without both a headphone jack and a way to hold it while charging (so no wireless), either I have no time to watch anything or my phone's battery will die before the evening.

I don't care what new features it has, if the iPhone 7 doesn't have a headphone jack I'll upgrade to the 6s instead.

iPhone 6s will be my last iPhone then.
How the **** will I be able to charge my god***** phone while listening to music then? Rosegold Tim is out of his mind.

Because Jobs never did things like this....

This is Apple, get used to it.

Lightning does output analog audio as well... Just look at the back of the current iPhone dock.

It's all a conspiracy to shift sales of the 4" 6C - the last product to use a 'legacy' connector.

And by legacy, I mean a ubiquitous connector that is used in literally billions of products worldwide every single day.

Apple should include an adapter with the iPhone 7 as well as start selling a separate one. Future iPhones can omit this adapter but at least the transition will be smoother and less people will gripe.

If Apple offers an adapter for the iPhone 7, they'll be expected to include it for the 7s, possibly the 8 as well. I think it's more likely that iPhone 7 owners will have to pay $20 for it and that will be the situation for every other iOS device released after the 7 that drops the 3.5mm port. Apple might be pushing for people to use wireless BT more as their headphone choice. Now if enough people make a stink about it, Apple might give in, but I don't believe that will happen. Apple believes they know what's best for us and ultimately they're probably right, temporary inconvenience or not. Now, for some a 3.5mm-less iPhone 7 might be a hard sale (along with the extinction of subsidized phones).

Nice.

So it's going to be:

iPhone on charge every night
iWatch on charge every night.
iEars! on charge every night.

what fun :)

You forgot your Apple Car to be charge every night.

Welcome to the Battery Age.

The biggest problem here, is that it's the lighting connector and not a industry standard. I'm okay with moving away from the 3,5mm. jack if progress has been made, but remember all other places you use headphones (laptop, tv, gaming etc.) will never use lightning port to allow you to use your expensive headphones.. Of course adaptors will be available, but for something in your pocket it won't be nice

So is using wired headphones in those situations.... wireless (Bluetooth) is the way to go.
How is using a wired headphone or earphones inconvenient in public places or airports or in any situation? Considering probably the vast majority of people still use and love wired headphones....I would Say your view is completely bizzare

Really hope they get rid of it. The knuckle draggers can keep their old phones or switch to android.

Whilst I have 2 pairs of bluetooth headphones, in ear and over ear I do like my wired ones and do prefer the choice.

It seems the iPhone 6s and 6s plus may both turn out to be the equivalent of the Mac Mini 2012, (solid devices that were followed by a slight miss step with the newer model).

This all seems a tad bizarre they'd release the iPad Pro with a headphone jack when the size of the device suggests BT headphones would be the far more practical solution. If a new iPad Air 3 comes out in March then the iPad Pro would have lasted less than 6 months before being 'outdated' by a new design form factor.

I think Apple are crossing the border between miniminalism and being impractical.

Its always saying 'there's an adaptor for that' but for many it will just make the phone less convenient one way or another for many people.

Having an adapter seems messy and a fault liability. I don't have an iPhone but when the iPod decides to go, then that would be the time for me to get one taking advantage of the media player capability. However, faffing around with an adapter and possible extra cost at the time of purchase really does grate. Keep it simple.

If they do this, then it has to be done well.

Not sure I like this move.

Sure I have Bluetooth PowerBeats for the gym, but I don't want to have to use them all the time when using my earpods is more convenient...

And you know, I cant charge and listen at the same time. Kind of a big deal.

So you like to sit on the ground in the airport next to your charging iPhone that's plugged in to the wall so you can listen to music? Wireless headphones are far more practical anytime you're in a public space where there are people around that can get snagged on your wires.

"completely bizarre" is definitely not the right phrase for it. Many people have switched to using Bluetooth headsets/earbuds because the removal of a tether between your head and your phone is convenient. How is that "bizarre"?

This fad of one port for everything need to die. We don't want adapters and hubs hanging out from every device and obviously we don't live in the Tim's post-pc world where people only use iOS and everything is done online on Mac (rMB:rolleyes:). Dumbing down stuff has been the mantra for Apple lately and this is going to drive people off sooner or later.
