So I have to carry a dock around with me? How very simple and beautiful and apple like....

Definitely not a good alternative if you have buy a dock, taking it everywhere you go. Of course it's possible Apple might come out with a smaller version of the dock or some additional adapter for maybe $30??? Something else to lose I guess.

It is not a question what kind of connector Apple will use, but what kind of plastic cable will be used? So far all are just really bad, they heat and break very easily.

Just another reason to hope that they ditch the wire altogether and use Bluetooth instead.

The future is definitely wireless. I could see this as a first move toward completely removing ALL ports from the iPhone. Once wireless charging is introduced there will be no need to have any holes in your phone.

Ridiculously stupid move that has zero benefit for the consumer but makes another cash cow for Tim and his cronies.

I'm sure apple would love to sell 50 dollar adapters and all that juicy lightning licensing money.
LOL you do not even know anything yet and bitching for no reason. I bet if you would own company you would be a good lad.

There is no hole in Apple Watch... probably maybe... and it will be water proof.

So I can no longer use a MIDI Keyboard and actually hear what I'm playing through an external speaker?

I can't plug my iPhone into a car / speaker system / audio recording device without an overpriced adapter?

There are so many things wrong about this rumoured decision. Removing the analog audio output renders so many devices and accessories useless and does nothing more than support the notion that Apple no longer wish to give the consumer the best experience. It proves that they are now 100% driven by margins.

Really? Interesting. Do you have a link to a tear down that shows it? I believe you, I just want to read more about it.
I haven't been able to find a stripdown of the dock yet but the 30 pin adaptor uses a built in DAC to output analogue audio.
Astute readers may have noticed that the Lightning connector does not support analog audio-out, but the 30-pin adapters do. That’s because hidden away inside each 30-pin adapter is a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that converts the Lightning connector’s digital audio signal to an analog version. (The inclusion of a DAC explains at least part of the price of the adapters.)

owning a MacBook with usb-C , having the one port on a device for charging and use, People who support this, are going to Change their minds very soon.

While I accept adapters for a laptop, not on an iPhone ....

41% of voters have no idea how audio signals work.

The number of people I've read saying, "digital audio is better", and "3.5mm only offers SD sound whereas lightning will offer HD sound" really shows a massive level of ignorance from a huge number of people.

I couldn't care less what they do. I have a pair of ATHm50s and have no problem using an adapter.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the iPads. I could see them using 2 lightning ports for storage and whatnot if they really want to push the iPad as a production device.

Well If you want to listen to music and the phone needs charging, what else are you supposed to flippin' do?
just wait for the phone to charge...or are you so obsessed with music that you cant wait for 2 hours?

I can't believe there's even one person who thinks it's ok to lose the headphone jack.

Don't you ever want to play music in your car?

Or a friend's car?

Or at a party on any random stereo?

Or at a club?

Or with your own headphones?

You seriously think you're going to keep an adapter dangling out of your phone all the time?

I love my iPhone, iPad, Macs etc. But this would put me over the edge. It woild be a sad sad day. But I need a phone that can interface with the rest of the world. And I'm not going to carry around a dongle to do it.

Yup, I play music in my car via bluetooth.
Last time I went to a party, I streamed my music via airplay to the amazing zeppelin air
At a club? Not sure the DJ would approve.
Yes, I'd use the headphones that apple ship with the device, as they always have done.
I'd keep the adapter (if there is one) attached to my headphones, makes a lot more sense!

Lightning (***not lightening people!!!***) has many advantages - better audio quality, data pass through on the cable - control the app playing music - track backwards/forwards, play/pause, volume control, provide power to the headphones/speaker if required.

The other thing that's making me smile are the people who are comparing the iPhone to iPod - how can an iPod have this adapter and be thinner and an iPhone can't?! Does that really need explaining - this is meant to be a tech' blog with intelligent readership.

Every change, every advancement (and this is an advancement) is greeted in the same way. And then forgotten when the next 'scandal' erupts.

Nothing has even been announced yet, and this forum is up in arms. If the 3.5 is dropped, have an opinion, getting so worked up before any announcement is pretty ridiculous.

What about the other rumours? Bigger Battery, Waterproofing - where are the good comments about those? Oh, that's right - far easy to criticise than focus on anything positive.

If losing a headphone jack, which should have been ditched 10 years ago and is only a 'standard' because it's cheap, makes you ditch your phone, then so be it. First world problems people.

Charge the phone on the 3 hour train ride while listening to music... no wait, now you only can stare at it...

iPhone 6s will be my last iPhone then.
How the **** will I be able to charge my god***** phone while listening to music then? Rosegold Tim is out of his mind.
Lightning supports charging and audio output simultaneously - check the dock. Or, use BT headphones to listen while charging, or play the audio through wireless speakers.

Most people charge more than that every night already. List of things I charge every night:

iPad Pro
Apple Pencil
iPhone 6+
Apple Watch
15" Retina MacBook Pro
HP Calculator
Beats Studio Wireless
Cheap Bluetooth Earbuds
Mophie Battery Pack (usually just once a week)

Charging stuff every night is just a fact of life these days. This is also the reason I laughed when people said that a one day battery life on the Apple Warch would mean it's doomed... most people don't care and are already used to plugging everything else in every night...

Yeah, I have so many things I have to charge now that if I'm not charging something, I'm definitely thinking about how long until I have to charge something. I really hope battery tech is much better ten years from now (I think five years is being too optimistic).

Sorry but how would an adapter work? Does lightning port support analogue audio? As far as I know, it does not. So the adapter needs to have a DAC and a small amplifier inside, not a simple 3.5mm to lightning switch.
Nope, the phone (if this rumour is true) will have the DAC added - just as it currently does for the 3.5mm port - this will finally allow quality line-level breakout cables for people using the phone (and hopefully in the future, the iPad) for music playback for gigs, clubs etc.

I rather replace the iPhone. Wireless headphones sound terrible, and I can barely grasp the paper-thin iPhone 6 as-is.

Your move, Tim.

You're gonna have to buy a 3 year old phone if you want something that isn't thin
