well, I cross my fingers they are not up to something big. The imac is fine as it is (just needs a spec bump), unless they come with some utter breakthrough...doubtful

the only reason people say this and why people in these forums say that is because you guys dont want to pay more if they put a retina display or something. Thats the truth.. so let me just say think im pretty sure if apple goes retina they are definitely offer the older model just like the retina macbook pro. and if apple changes the whole line well buy a 2011 version then on amazon or something, some of you guys need to stop whish not to be new design because thats not gonna hurt anything. If you dont like it dont buy it if you like the current one buy that and ****.

As far as I can see Apple couldn't release a 27-Inch Retina model with doubled pixel resolutions because there are no GPUs that could handle that many pixels, they top out at 3840 x 2160. That situation won't change in the next 6-9 months as NVidia.

The Intel HD 4000 which is present on a lot of Macs can do 4096x4096. I'm sure a dedicated GPU can do a lot more if asked. And who better to do the asking than Apple?

Zero.
No matter how great the external ODD - and providing Blue Ray is certainly neat, it still costs more than zero.
I'd rather put those bucks in 8GB worth of Kensington RAM which I can install.
Apple COULD do us all a favor and put more RAM in as a basic to handle their increasingly large OSX variants.
I agree, the 27" in particular should now have 8Gb, maybe just have the lowest 21.5 with 4Gb?

Otherwise, our bucks saved by retaining the ODD could also go to a larger HD.
2TB is almost a requirement now with videos, iPhoto and iTunes loading up the internal HD.
Again for the 27" a 2Tb standard would be perfect for me, I can add a SSD later when the cost comes down.

The slooooww response of this old Dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC G5 tower is driving me up the wall, but I'm betting on a lot more than spec bumps in a 2012 iMac update.
Spec bumps alone shouldn't account for this much delay.
My Dual 2Ghz PPC G5 is still going good, much better with the 4Gb of RAM I put in about 18 months ago.

I can live with it until Apple release an updated iMac but can't wait to do some speed comparisons when I do get it.

BS! You are totally off with your presumptions. I don´t care if the new iMac will cost 7.000 USD...I´ll buy it without hesitation. I will by the most maxed out BTO I can buy anyway! But, I don´t care about the retina, because it doesn´t really bring much to the table, except a sharper screen and a catchy name. iMac is a work machine for me that looks good in my living room.
Sure, I won´t mind a retina screen that much, but I rather have a machine tomorrow than in 3 months - that´s how little it means to me.
But, what I want is to pay less for the SSD drive, I want it to support 32gb of memory or more. I want a GTX 680M GPU and an Ivy Bridge i7 CPU. And I want USB3. Because I want the top of the line hardware so that I can work with what I do, without any stuttering....and that means images up to 30k pixels width and height with 50 layers in Photoshop cs6 ...I must know the machine will not choke on this. Retina display for me is pulling the performance the wrong way and until the day it won´t have any negative performance effect it doen´t do it for me.....Buying the current model will piss me off even more, because I know there´s much better hardware out there. If the iMac would follow the computer tech like other machines I could have these things it could come to a point were I could do the stuff I do for a long time before a needed computer refresh.

i undertand you.. and i much rather have an bump upgrade this month rather than have retina on october i agree.. but i think youre wrong by saying retina and new design doesnt really bring anything to the table.. it seems you havent seen the macbook pro retina its not just sharper the colors are more vibrant more pleasing to look up for us (like you say on using photoshop) would be awesome the images and graphics look more amazing and its just overall better. btw the hd4000 do support 4k apple can remove the cd drive and use that space for two gpus or something i trust apple they know what they are doing i dont think they would put a retina to a machine and not be able to use for photoshop and the cs6 suite, final cut pro x, logic and others.. so lets stop wishing for same old boring design and i hope we can get a new design this month since apple has taken longer than usual to release this machine.

Mac pros are new why don't you get that, could get a real nice one plus cinema display for 7k...thunderbolt is better than usb3

It seems stock is back up again in a number of the retailers cited in OP's article

In today's Best Buy ad, they've got the current model for $70 off regular price. That's gotta be indicative of something, right?

I'm still in doubt that we'll see such a retina version. I hate that misleading branding anyway.

Sorry, they also had $100 off the new retinas, so it means nothing at all.

Not exactly. I don't want to spend money on a $500 graphics card, only to have it choked by, as far as I'm concerned, an entirely unnecessary feature. I also don't want my thousands of dollars of graphics software to look like blurry crap on the screen. It's fine for iPhones and iPads where you're just playing games and checking email, but when you're actually buying this machine for the performance, it doesn't make much sense. Buying a 2011 machine off of Amazon isn't conducive to getting maximum performance either. If the only option with the refresh is a retina display, I'll probably just get a Mac Pro.

I agree the July is looking more likely for the Ivy Bridge update and it will most likely follow the likes of the MBP with USB3 and faster CPUs and up the spec on all models. They will keep FW and Ethernet and the current design. There is a slim chance of a Retina model but while this is unlikely it would again follow the MBP and be a separate line.

But IMO we won't see retina iMac before a redesign in mid 2013 to late.

Also we're likely to get the Ivy Bridge update in the Mac Mini in the coming weeks along with the iMac and Mountain Lion, JMHO.

I really hope so. I'm moving abroad in August and really want to take a high-end 2012 27" with me :)

Your argument is perfectly logical and I agree with it.

For me a reasonably priced SSD option would be far more beneficial. Note to Apple, I do not consider AU$600 to remove the HDD and replace it with a AU$130 126GB SSD to be reasonable

Btw, it can come in August.

Apple have tendency to push the release date of their OS to the last day of the month...

so July will probably be 29... or something like that, if this is the case the imac can come in august....

Also I would like to add that in this point in time, unless it is matter of life and death, I would not buy the imac 2011, the new one is close, and all there is to do is simply wait for apple ( unclear) move..

Even if it will come in 6 month from now, buying such an expansive computer should last at least 5 years,
I would eat myself , when in 2 years from now when every device will be USB 3, I won't be able to use any one of those with this computer, that will really freak me out!

And we'll probably not see them until late August if not September.

ITA, my 2005 G5 has lasted 7 years, it can do a few more months.

why are you guys saying September, or October, if its just going to be bump update.. all the components that make up the imac have been out for quite sometime now, why would apple wait till then? i think well have a july 24 or 25 release with mountain lion, imac and mac minis.. just like the did last year mac minis and airs with lion why wouldnt apple just do the same theres no logic on what youre saying.

Actually I checked and the lion came in July and the Imac came one month before, and the mini came in the same month, if apple will continue that line, you are correct.

but that is correct if the Mountain lion will be available in mid July, I say that since there is no GM and we are in the end of the first week, that means 29...
