So did I so had to switch, Affinity Photo, so much better.

Yea I have that on my iPad Pro, tend to use Pixelmator Pro more as it's easier to use and I can start one project on my iPad and finish it on the MacBook or iMac. That's what ive been doing in the past anyway.

I've been researching alternative apps, Adobe Fresco is a nice little app as well, so is Lightroom. However there is no alternative for Final Cut Pro, it really is the best video editor there currently is.

For someone like me it's a none issue, I edit videos on my iMac in Final Cut. Adobe Premier just isn't there and I wouldn't know where to start (when at university we learned video editing on Final Cut Pro.) It would be great if Apple allowed Final Cut Pro to be cross platform and used on Windows machines as well, or if they made an iPad Pro version.

The most that I would push something like the Surface Book 3, would be in playing the odd game and editing photos. Again the only problem I see is that I use Pixelmator Pro, which is Mac/iPad Pro only :(.
Maybe you misunderstand me I could not care less about video editing :). It's such a tiny segment of laptop use even on Mac's. Yet seems to get too much coverage IMO whether you use FCP or Adobe , same same, just personal preference

Same on gaming the 15" is slightly better over the 13" but given I leveled WOW classic up to level 23 on my Surface GO while waiting for my Razer to arrive shows you my interest on gaming spec's :)

Affinity Designer and Photo are pretty good programs. Not sure how pen support is on the Surface with those programs. I'm pretty much steering away from Adobe with their ridiculous subscription plan.

Try Resolve 16 for video editing. They have a very capable free version, and the Studio price is very reasonable. It's also very optimized for dGPU's and just as fast as FCPX.

seems a pretty balanced review. Seems like the pen jitter hasn’t been fixed tho:(

The newly announced Lenovo Yoga Duet 7i looks like a great alternative to the surface pro. I'm very interested in this one.

• Kickstand like SP
• Bundled keyboard that's also works with Bluetooth
• Bundled pen
• 13-inch IPS 2K touchscreen
• 10th Gen i7

you can’t get the 15” with 16GB ram and 512GB SSD, at least not here in the U.K. It seems like if you want more storage they are trying to up sell to the 32GB Ram version and make it more expensive. I think Microsoft should have more configurations (what about a 512 with 8gb ram, 1TB with 16GB Ram).
i do like the nice touch of if you pre-order they throw in the pen (in a colour of your choice).
I can't see stopping at 8 gig of RAM these days. But you are correct it does have 32 gigs. I had the thought of only needing 16 gigs, but then realized that wanted more than 256 gigs of storage. This is one of the issues with things that are sealed and can't be upgraded on your own. I did not get a pen with my order, I pre-ordered early, but that is fine as I have so many Surface pens.

I've just watched this review and his thoughts "if you are someone who plans to keep your laptop for 5 plus years, i would definitely think twice about keeping this one" he does not sound confidence about it.

Also 5 years is not that long, my 2011 MacBook Pro lasted me for 8 years, my current iMac is the late 2012 one and it's still working.

That's not to say he is right, it's just one persons opinion but i've been watching a lot of Surface Book 3 videos as part of my research.

And then there is this guy, who is actually a lot like myself. He writes (i don't know if he does so for a living as he is a filmmaker as well). He seems to be happy with the Book 3

VERY interesting!

Dave is that all you got from that ?, now find some reviews that tell you what laptop to buy in 2020 to keep for 5 years :) especially changes in construction since your 2011 MBP add a different slant on serviceability to many laptops

I'm not sure but I remember one poster (The guy from Colorado) noted it is possible to get 4 years MS warranty

To be fair, I have taken many things from many different reviews, specs and opinions. I really wanted to research before committing to anything, either way a good chunk of change will be spent, if I go with the Surface Book 3 we are talking over £2,000 for the 15” similarly if I go with the iPad Pro it will cost over £1,500 when you include the pencil and folio cover.

The thing is I look at every avenue of what I’m going to do with the device, what apps or programs do I need for example. I have a little advantage as I did own a Surface Pro 6, and I’ve also owned iPads, both have their plus and minuses.

Dave as we have noted before you have 2 months of trial period before you finally commit and that's real hands on time.

Its not like your in the same position as Q-6 or Lee or I we don't get a chance we are on a one shot deal other than lemons

I noticed your Imac is 2012 you do know it cant be used as a monitor for your laptop, they disabled this feature on the rear ports after 2011

I also note the SB3 should or could replace your IPP and MBP that are both old and can act as reserve if your IMac goes on the blink, where an IPP is unlikely to be able too. So a new IPP it's not really a comparable device for many reasons.

That's the one part I don't get. At all. I can't buy a SB3 in my country.
Most of the devices we talk about in this subforum I can't even buy. Unless I order them from amazon/ebay, then pay import taxes, etc. So even if I get a lemon, I have to send it back, deal with customs so that they don't charge me for importing again, etc.

All I would need is 14 day trial period. I really don't need more to see if device suits me or not.
Some of you here have 30 days on some products, others have 60 days. If you think you're gonna love SB3, order one, test it out. Not your cup of tea? Return it. No money lost.

I would really love to be able to do just that.

My iMac is old now and the only reason I haven’t updated it, is because Apple are long overdue to redesign the iMac.
My MacBook Pro 2011 died and I brought the 2019 13” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar last year, it’s been my writing machine and some editing using the Touch Bar.

I have no doubt that the Book 3 could replace my MacBook Pro, in fact it could possibly replace my iMac (I still love the iMac tho it’s by far my favourite desktop ever).
My concern isn’t the Book 3 itself, it’s more Windows and the tablet part not being the best (as mentioned in reviews), only 3 hours of battery life as well.

Yep same here for many products

I bought my $4k Razer completely blind from US and as it was over personal import limit I had to raise a special import licence and get certification etc, fortunately only 7% duty, so same as US sales tax

Even though we have quite a few Samsung stores (no Apple Store) still some items don't make it here and no 14 days returns policy etc

Don't think Dave could survive here LOL

Razer is a small company, so I can understand why they aren't available everywhere. But Microsoft is the main tech giant in my country for 30+ years. Everything runs on windows and ms office. MS is the main supplier of software for schools, they have big government contracts, etc.

But still no xbox support in Croatia. No surface lineup. And MS is a huge company, so that part is really hard to understand :)

I think your mixing best with familiarity :)

The only thing the IPP is the best at is it's OS is completely orientated for touch interface

Many other devices can best it, in many respects

The SB3 tablet as we already noted can run 12 hours attached and it is only a matter of when doing your couch bit to dock the detached tablet occasionally when having a break to top it up. Its not like you are using it mobile. I think this is a minor inconvenience given it's capability re full OS apps or mobile Android Apps if you wish. You don't have to run off and complete on your MBP or Imac like you do on your IPP

It's only your lack of familiarity with W10 that you were getting to grips with on your SP6, before you sold it. There is no justification to doubt W10 capability, most of the world do not ;)

This

And this

I mean look at me, 20 years with Apple, I switched to Windows, then I switched back, nope macOS is better...

Then I properly stood back, thought through what I needed/wanted, the software replacements and so on then I sold all my existing macOS devices and bought a Mac Mini as a backup (fear).

I went into lockdown with Windows, 60ish days later I have not even started up the Mac Mini. My fears around others in my circle using macOS and me not being able to do things they could are gone. I have all the right tools and whilst some things frustrate the life out of me on Windows, it is because I am comparing how easy it would be to do it on a Mac rather than appreciating not all OSs are equal.

Wanted some extra gaming power, no issues swapped out the GTX 1050 for an RTX 2070S.
Bought a new 1tb M.2 NVMe as my new main drive and put the existing 512GB NVMe in the spare M.2 slot.
An extra 16GB ram, no problem, side cover off, click and click, done.

If I had wanted to do any of these types of upgrades on most of my Apple devices I would have needed to purchase a completely new one.

Yeah, I'm loving my new Windows setup and not having any restrictions around what I can or can't do.

Well Dave, you are still here. I don't know what else I can add to what others have already said. By the way my original Surface Book was purchased at launch. That makes it over 5 years old, and it is still running as well as the day I bought it. It has taken all of the Windows updates without a hitch, no need to ever re-install the OS. Saying that it won't last five years is boloney. Queen also has a older Book that he gave his daughter, and he has stated no issues and she uses it for art. As far as the pen issue is concerned it is only a issue for very slow strokes for some, and I suspect that most of the problems are caused by people using the wrong driver. Most programs by default go to the WinTab driver that is Wacom compatible... But that is not the best driver for ntrig. The Windows ink driver is best for Surface devices. I had to find this information from one of my art forums. In the end trying a new OS is a experience, like everything you need to have an open mind, ready to appreciate what the experience brings to the table. Windows can be very exciting and very productive... but only is you allow it to be. Good luck.

Ouch, a low score from the Verge.

Here is a quote from one of the comments.

PeteBeast
Anyone who wants proper pen input and detachability. I’d personally never buy this machine, but I’m sitting on my 2019 XPS 15 and my Architect wife is LITERALLY drawing and sketching on CAD and Photoshop right next to me on her 15" Book 2. She swears by it and is never going back (her words). She comes from working on iMacs, Macbook Pros, and even Sony Vaios. The amount of time she shifts between tablet mode and "traditional" is around 10 times a day, which is a lot.
End quote.

I might also add that already many of the popular configurations are already sold out. The Surface Book is a dream come true for those that want and need it. If all you want is a laptop, there are myriad choices.
