I need to hunt for a laptop today, I was holding out replacing the MBP until back in the office, but I just need something, anything I can use away from the desk at home, outside specifically whilst this weather looks to be holding up. Just been told this morning I am WFH until Sept at the earliest. I don't expect I will be returning to an office environment before the end of this year.

Does anyone know what screen type works best in outdoors light for best viewing?
Well... You can always join me with the Samsung Galaxy Flex Book. It has an actual outdoor mode that is 600 nits. And lets not forget that lovely blue color. Here is one of my favorite reviewers on the subject.

To summarise; for me iPadOS is predominantly focused on consumption, W10 can deliver the same to a lesser extent, however W10 allows the full desktop experience with expected productivity. MS Surface encapsulates and delivers, outside of a few Apple specific apps and a mobile gaming experience. IPP just a waste of tech, being little more than a vehicle to promote Apple's locked in, locked down culture, big numbers that are meaningless in the real world, outside of bragging rights ...

Apple and Pro as many now know is simply sales & marketing for the uneducated. I too was concerned with leaving Apple's walled garden, equally I found those that matter also flexed with no drop out in productivity.

All true.
That said, I am jealous of some parts of the iPad Pro hardware (specifically: screen, processor, speakers, thermals). Like you said, what a waste of tech! I hope Microsoft can fill the gap and catch up. The other thing I wish the SP had is a bigger trackpad. There’s a lot of wasted space. The recently released Surface go 2 has a larger trackpad (on the narrow side) than the Pro 7, which unnerves me but also makes me hope for the future. 😉

Even as someone who very much enjoys the iPad experience for browsing and consumption I very much agree it still doesn't feel like a 'get things done' OS to me, even with the latest advancements. Some people swear by the iPad for productivity so I guess it can work, but for me at least there's still way too many drawbacks vs a traditional laptop and nothing really gained by switching to it.

That's why I stopped wasting time and money on Android & Apple tablets. I found they either simply lack capability or required too many work arounds to accomplish basic tasks, especially iPad with it's excuse of a file system. With a W10 based 2in1 or tablet all the data is onboard with the same structure that can be accessed by the same applications or their viewers and synchronised across all systems. The consumption being basically the same, barring the mobile gaming experience of which I could care very less about...

IPP is totally pointless IMO in it's current from as Apple obsessive greed prevents it maturing in to a far more usable product, with Pro equalling more $$$$. I've looked at a few of the W10 Arm based systems and they all come up lacking. Some can be fairly swift, equally as the load sustains and builds they all tend to bog down, equally I'd be interested to see Apple's mobile processors run macOS? Me I'd reckon on the same results, as big numbers on the likes of the vanity driven Geekbench benchmark are worthless in real world scenario's that demand multiple threads and or sustained loads. Bottom line is if Apple's processors were so very potent they would be driving the MBP, today, they don't and for good reason.

Problem with Apple is it deliberately structures it's computing line to encourage, if not force multiple hardware purchases as opposed to producing the best it could. Hence the limitation's, frustration's, lack of quality assurance and abundance of excuses without the merest hint of being apologetic for screwing the customer due to poor design. Ultimately for many the hardware & software solutions need to reliably deliver, not solely look great on the coffee shop table...

Feel for you, I touched down in HK 29th of Dec-19, been home ever since what a mess. Not sure that I'll even work at all this year given international travel is a factor. Such is life, not happy by any means. All the same others have and are suffering far bigger issues if not worse...

Think the new Samsung Flex has a specific outdoors feature where the display is punched up to 600 nits, which is about the brightest I'm aware of right now.

Absolutely would buy this, is it available in the UK now though? WIll check.
Yep it is, I posted it a few days back :)

I understand the new lakefield chipset in the S Book Intel version is the reason the Neo is delayed

This made me laugh, I thought I was clicking on Samsung 4 core Flex review and this pops up :D

Best thing of all its still more use to me than an IPP LOL

So, FFS...

I mentioned I was selling my IPP 11" as eBay was offering a free seller fee weekend. Cleaned it all up, took the screen protector off, making sure there no scratches on the screen and everything was in order. Listed last night and that was that.

We were sitting in the garden this afternoon, took out the IPP to listen to some music, it fell over, soft fall, no real apparent impact. Forgot there was no screen protector on it.

Yup, the screen is ****ed. Crack from the top right corner, and then split off in two or three directions across the screen.

Cancelled the auction, put a new screen protector on it as I had a spare. Hopefully, it will hold it together and stop it getting worse. Might as well just keep it now and use it until I can't anymore. In use, it is not that noticeable other than a bit in the middle of the screen.

An example of just how fragile they are. I accept it was my fault, I just totally forgot to put the new screen protector on.

that sucks sorry to hear that. My 2017 iPad Pro replacement is having issues, this is the replacement that Apple sent me in late 2018. The screen sometimes will not respond to touch, a few seconds later it starts working again.

I hope with the newer models this issue doesn’t exist and has been fixed.

Honestly, not that bothered, I was going to replace it with something else. Now that I use Windows so much there was no benefit to the IPP. Will just use it for media consumption which is what I had started using it for. Still works fine and the cracks are hairline for the most part, with the screen protector no swiping issues, so no big deal.

They haven’t fixed it? is there any evidence of this?
It’s rather annoying if true. It should of been first on the list with the new iPad Pro’s
Yeah, I still have touch irresponsiveness. It started happening upon updating to 13.4.

So now it’s hardware and software causing it.

At any rate, as soon as I can get to a Best Buy to do trade ins, I probably will.

Just another quality Apple product. Personally I don't consider needing to baby or use kid gloves being a factor in the use of a "Pro" device. Being robust should be a mandatory factor of the design, not hype, sales & marketing shenanigans...

I still have my Acer Switch 5 and it's literally served me from the equator to the poles it's been; dropped, compressed, subjected to 0% - 100% humidity, travel via jet, ferry, bus, taxi, bone shaking 4X4 where no roads exist whatsoever.

So just exactly what is wrong with Apple, given my Switch 5 cost the princely sum of $650 and very far from being the purported "Pro" device Apple promotes. Fundamentally one is a working tool, one a toy for the masses, One is slow, but steadfast, yet one is incapable of basic tasks without a network and convoluted workarounds. Fundamentally one is useful work tool, one a very limited device...

1st time I have ever broken an Apple product myself, usually, Apple does it for me.
:)

Out with the old in with the new

Is the FLEX on order yet ?

I had decided to get her indoors the Flex because of the snapdragon Book S was not 100% with W10 64bit apps

But now the Book S has an Intel one, its a given for her but it seems only available in UK and maybe Korea

I checked most Amazon sites and the Flex or Book S is not listed other than UK so I would get clobbered for 20% VAT, shipping and 7% import duty

So I am waiting to see if Singapore, just down the road starts to sell them as friends commute to KL (or will again shortly)

I think the UK also does not list the 15" flex which is only a 100 or so more and a good option or the I7 version, weird, US seems to only have 2 models probably due to some exclusive deal currently because of the sim. So not available from other suppliers that ship internationally.

To be fair I don’t think you can blame Apple if someone drops their iPad and it breaks. Most devices will do that if you drop them, including your smartphone.

What I would blame Apple for is if my iPad arrived bent like some people have reported. The quest for thinness can have its issues.

I was hoping I could get the 15" rather than 13" but at the moment it seems not. Wondering whether they will add it.

I agree mostly, but it was not a crashing fall from height or anything, it was sitting on a table with a glass top, all that happened was that is fell forward whilst sitting on the stand. An £800 device should not be so fragile in my view. If it had fallen off the table to the concrete patio below, different story. That is the quest for thinness you mentioned.

I agree the iPad Pro from 2018 onwards seems to be less sturdy, there are a few cases of them even arriving to people bent straight out of the box. They should make them more durable even if that means making them a little more heavy.

That being said, i do really like the look of the new iPad Pro's with Face ID (which i really like on my iPhone 11 Pro Max). The reduction in bezel is great and i'm a sucker for the space grey colour! also i recently (the other day in fact) found out that with the Magic Keyboard (yes that insanely priced accessory) it can be used to edit video in LumaFusion, an App i use on my current iPad Pro (2017 model) it's a great app that also works with Final Cut Pro, when i want hand off the editing over to my 2019 13" MacBook Pro i can do that. With this new keyboard on the iPad Pro 2020, i may find that i spend more time editing on the iPad than i do on my Mac. Something i would never of thought possible a few years ago.

That is where the conflict comes in, while i do like the possibilities with all of this, i do also recognise Apple has issues!
