Back in 2016 mind. Rather thought W10 Pro was one of the perks of Surface, guess not...:(

Q-6
When I got my Surface Pro 3 I knew the non Pro's came with Home. Then they added all these additional variants and I didn't really keep track.

TBH I'd far rather Microsoft dropped this nonsense and just had one unified OS same as Apple. If I dropped $2K+ on a new Surface Studio Laptop I'd not be best pleased with being palmed off with W10 Home. Microsoft should include W10 Pro with it's own products given they are selling them as premium.

Looking good mi7chy! What keyboard is that?
It's not @mi7chy 's own SP8; they are referencing a Reddit post where someone has already received it. The Redditor mentions they went with the SPX Type Cover as it was cheaper (note no pen storage). Also, the new cover has the new 'flat' logo on the Windows key.

That's funny, I saw the KingMit368 and thought 'Mitch' - must be the same dude. That'll teach me for not paying closer attention. :)

The SPX Type Cover looks good - I don't think I'd get a pen so that might be a decent option.

Yeah, I don't disagree, though I also see from their perspective most users don't need most (all?) of the pro features especially on a laptop so why include them for "free" when they could make more money off them.

I'd kind of contest as the likes of BitLocker should be a standard in 2021. Anyway MS & Intel lost my $$$$ on the last cycle as Apple's M1 is in a completely different league...

For me it's not entirely a decision about hardware - before I pull the trigger on anything I want to see what Apple does during the October/November events. Specifically the release of Monterey. I haven't been happy with the direction MacOS has gone over the last few releases, but I'll install Monterey on my existing MBP and give it an honest shot. If it doesn't piss me off, I'll take a good look at the 14" MBP.

But based on the trajectory Apple has been on, I'm not optimistic about Monterey. The hardware doesn't matter if I'm not happy with the software. So the other options are a Surface Pro 8 or a Razer 14". We'll see what happens!

Bitlocker is enabled on all Surfaces that come with Windows Home. OEMs on the other hand it's not. Other than bitlocker It's really just group policy editor and remote desktop that is taken out of windows home and to be fair, when they started installing Windows 10 home on the Surface devices, they did actually drop the price down $50 which is the upgrade price to pro, so no one was really losing anything.

Agree..

The machine I am getting today was $2100 and it ships with Win 11 Home.. I admit I was a little disappointed it did not come with Win 11 Pro..

I want to skip the 1st Gen of the upcoming MBP as Apple can get it right and also get it wrong. M1 MBP seems a safe bet as the chassis is tried and proven. Monterey I'll avoid until I think it's a worthily update for my needs.

I made the conscious decision not to be locked into one platform which has worked out well as I don't now need to consider overly just get the best HW for the job at hand.

Well unless you need the additional features. Personally I'd try to work the Pro version of Windows into the deal, being fairly confident that on a $2K+ notebook someone would happily throw in W11 Pro, that's what I did with this ASUS.

Oh I agree but i'm sure they have usage data that probably said most people buying Surfaces werent using those things anyways. and it's as simple as going to the MS store and clicking upgrade to pro for $50 dollars and takes about 2 mins and a restart.

Sounds like a solid plan to me. I'm agnostic when it comes to my desktop/laptop choices. My iPhone is with me all the time so the 'ecosystem' stuff can be decoupled from my computer without any heartburn. I'm at the point where I consider my phone to be merely an appliance anyway - I don't spend much time thinking about it.

My computer(s) are much more personal devices and there's a bunch of nerdy impulses that I like to scratch with them. Thus the almost year-long indecisiveness with regard to how I'm gonna replace this 2015 MBP. :)

Some good preliminary reviews for the SLS...was surprised to see some good critiques: not to grab the display at the corners while you have an app open as you may accidentally close the app and the heat dissipation from the side vents is toward the front of the device (in line with the trackpad).

I have to say, the hinge display is something I could find very useful especially with Excel and art. The 180 display is also why I was looking at several Asus models (unfortunately the 16" studiobook pro is not being released in the States until some time next month.) Just waiting on a response regarding W11 and SLS compatibility.*

EDIT: *Nope, need Windows 10…no Surface for me right now.

I’ll keep an eye on sales for the SP8.

^^^^ I really dig how the type cover folds at the top to hide the lower bezel and pen. Pretty slick. Might wander up to the MS store today and check these things out in person.

Looks like the black Surface Pro X keyboard without slim pen (part # QVK-00001) which you can find for ~$68.

https://www.aztekcomputers.com/qvk00001-Microsoft-1E6MMHCEE3G.html

I got the platinum (ignore picture that shows red) Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen 1 (part # 27I-00061) for ~$120.

Platinum

Red $96

For anyone looking to buy the Surface Pro 8, Microsoft currently has the best deals with edu/military discount. Costco is also carrying bundles with keyboard+pen but only the 8GB RAM models and also have Surface Laptop Studio with 3050ti dGPU.
