These numbers seem WAY low to me.

I use ApplePay wherever and whenever I can. And I see used by others often. I always ask if they take Apple Pay.

It is SO much easier than using a card. Plus with my Apple Watch, it is even easier....Just activate Apple Pay on the watch and place my wrist next to the terminal. Really, what could be easier??

Add to that, the AppleCard and I'm making money as well as having the easiest pay system available anywhere!

In my experience tap to pay is even easier. Apple pay requires bringing up wallet, selecting card, unlocking phone...
^^ This... I think some people think it's more complicated than it really is. Once you set up a default card, All you do is take out your phone (unless it's already in your hand), double click the power button and thats it. Can literally be done in one movement.

Not Home Depot :(

Don't remind me. I feel like they DID at one point. I remember (or think I remember) using Apple Pay there several years ago. But, yeah, I use Apple Pay everywhere I possibly can these days, which is quite a few places. In fact, I can't actually remember any place other than Apple Pay and maybe some sort of hole in the wall restaurant that didn't accept Apple Pay (but then, they were cash only....).

Can’t comment on the not working, where I live if you take contactless payments you take Apple Pay.
On the wallet thing you set up a default card and double tap the lock button and it brings up that card even directly from the Lock Screen, when it brings up the card you can change it from there.
For me it’s easier than pulling out my wallet, opening it, fiddling around in the pockets for the right card and then tapping it, especially as if I’m stood waiting in a queue I probably already have my phone out

Does it need to be explicitly activated? I’m the U.K. if a store takes contactless they take Apple Pay by default, some have legacy systems that limit the purchases but most now treat Apple Pay as a full card payment where the limit is your cards limit
In the US is different for some reason. I agree with you in Europe I can use it EVERYWHERE. Here there are merchants that you can use NFC payments but Apple Pay is specifically locked out. I have no clue why! I will get a reading that says "transaction denied" and the clerk will usually say ...."yea we dont take Apple Pay"

I remember when Home Depot said they would be the largest retailer to accept Apple Pay. That was 6 friggin years ago.
They piss me off so much!
Yes what was up with that? They were one of the first to take it and now they removed it? So many advantages to accept it? Cutting down on fraud? I dont understand.

Yeah I’ve never used a contactless terminal in the UK that doesn’t accept ApplePay either. I wonder if it’s to do with the frequencies used here? You don’t even need it to be advertised, you just know ApplePay will work on any till or checkout terminal that allows contactless.

Pretty shocking. I use it every time I purchase something. Only time I don’t use it is when there isn’t an Apple Pay option.

i understand that your experience was different, but i live here, so either i'm lying, or there are still many places that don't accept apple pay.
There are geographical areas here in the US that have a greater adoption. Don't know why...

sounds about right.

there is really no advantage to using Apple Pay in the US where I'm at because too many places don't accept it so you need to carry credit cards anyway not to mention your driver's license. And it's just as easy if not easier to pull out a card than your phone.

Also my cards have better rewards. And some at least can't be used with Apple Pay.

...

some places like McDonald's drive thru, I remember using it there early on and it was a pain because the worker would have to hold the terminal out the window. Awkward. And now one can just use the app anyway and no advantage to using Apple Pay. My cc is in the app. Not even sure I would (get) the rewards of this particular CC thru Apple Pay anyway.

And speaking of using it online...some sites support its online use, but then you skip the promo code screen and can't take advantage of deals.

Plus again a place like Target.com supports Apple Pay but why use it when you can use your Red Card and get 5% off? ...

And again not sure you can use promo codes at target.com with ApplePay. Something similar iirc correctly at Best Buy with BB card and promo codes. Gamestop same thing.

AT Costco you can use it altho I haven't tried. And not sure if you get the rewards with your Costco Visa card or not. I have to google that. But I know you have to whip out your card when you go in. And that means opening the app afaik and clicking your card and showing them your phone. ....compared to just flashing my money clip (of credit cards) at them with the Costco card on the outside. The latter is easier. And when you checkout, ...not sure if you have to do that same process again of opening the app etc but it also strikes me as not as convenient as just scanning the Costco credit card.

last , overall, my phone can break/stop working if I drop it. My credit card doesn't break or suddenly stop working. I can lose my credit card. But I can also lose my phone. So that seems like a wash. My phone also can run out of battery which at best would be an inconvenience of going to my car etc and charging it for a bit. My credit card doesn't run out of battery. I feel like I would be carrying a credit card with me anyway just in case especially since I have to carry my DL anyway.

...

I use Apple Pay almost every time I can. I will say that there are still far too many places where it can't be used. Around me it's very hit or miss. I would guess that were it more widely used, people would adopt it at a much higher %. The only reason that I'm somewhat inclined to believe the 6% of registered users is that I still often find when I inquire if a store accepts Apple Pay, I still frequently get the deer in the headlights response. When I show them my phone or watch, sometimes it registers, but quite often I still encounter, "I don't really know" type responses.

Question for the US folks: I often read that place xyz doesn’t support Apple Pay or store xyz now finally supports it (in the US). In Germany/Europe every terminal which accepts contactless credit card payment automatically accepts Apple Pay, because at the end Apple Pay is also just another form of contactless credit card. Why is this different in the US? Thanks.
That is a fantastic question that I have searched high and low all over the internet and I cannot find an answer to! But for some reason here terminals can be programmed to only accept NFC from a card, or Apple Pay, or google pay, or any combination and pick and choose. Its really bizarre and very frustrating!

"In 2015, 19 percent of U.S. merchants were able to accept contactless payments, but in 2021, this rose to 70 percent."
LOL In Poland this is 100% And everybody use it.

me neither. when we had a brick and mortar shop that was one of the first things i set up, but surprisingly very few people actually used apple pay...
I travel a lot....and when I'm in Europe its like Christmas, because I never need to pull my wallet out. Funny though, even though most people use contactless I would still see people be surprised I could pay with my phone. Here I have been to cities/areas, where I can use Apple Pay just about anywhere. But most places nope. ...The more rural the area I think the worse it is? Maybe I'm wrong. I went to a small glass shop in the Florida keys, the place had signs all over the door (Contactless, Apple Pay, Google Pay), the guy had a "Square" machine (I've never seen one not take Apple Pay) and when I tried to use it, it said (payment type not accepted). I tried 2 different cards on Apple Pay and nothing. He had to insert the card....He called his wife (he was really nice trying to help me) and she was like "oh no our thing doesnt take Apple Pay). I was like its SQUARE how could it not? Would be great if someone on this forum with some technical knowledge or background would chime in LOL LOL

Apple Pay is not the same thing as Apple Card
Exactly. I have my Amazon Prime VISA set up as my primary card in Apple Pay and I get all the normal Amazon rewards points. One person pointed out that they use the Red Card at Target so they get the Target rewards. If the Target card is registered in Apple Pay, it works exactly the same way; you'll get your rewards.

The bigger issue I have is just that not everyplace supports it, and even when they do, it is frequently not advertised (like on the card reader display) that they accept it. Sometimes *after* swiping my card, the display will change and show that Apple Pay was an option. So I almost always have to ask - then half the time the clerk doesn't know, they're like "try it and see..."

right, europe is great like that. i could use apple pay on the moscow underground while nyc was still using tokens(not really, but still)))
that's def wrong, unless it was one of those chip looking things that connect to a phone or an ipad via lightning, 'cause that's what square starts you out with. but if it's any kind of a "base" thing — it totally accepts apple pay...

p.s. in mexico i found only two places that accepted apple pay( hopefully now that their banks work with it — things are changing.
