The point of us "iPad haters" coming here is to explain to people why they're making a mistake. It seems everyone has fallen into the "if-Apple-makes-a-portable-device-that-isn't-a-Mac-then-it-must-be-good" mentality, which is not a good way of thinking. People need to know that there are devices that have the same form factor as an iPad (tablet, not necessarily the same screen size though), but do everything the iPad does-- plus more-- better. And then there's netbooks, which would fit most iPad users' needs.

I see. So basically you are here to say that everyone that doesn't agree with you, despite perfectly rational reasoning, is an idiot.

You in:

1876: Who needs to be bothered with a telephone to relay messages when you have a telegraph?

1877: Who needs an electric light when fire is free?

1885: who needs a car when you have horses and buggies?

1947: Who needs a freezer when you have an ice box and ice man to service it?

1982: Why by CDs when cassette tapes are half the price?

Oh and there is an iPad-like device that comes with the Apple ecosystem & build quality, and usable GUI? Please do tell. There are plenty of PMPs, yes. But the iPad is more than a simple PMP.

1/ Use Apple's keyboard dock connector or any third party equivalent which will work even for an easy "on the go" use, for sure.

No thanks, I don't want to haul around extra items in case I need to do some writing. My net book comes with a keyboard, and the screen and keyboard close together to protect each other from dirt and scratches. I will have to get a case to protect my ipad's screen...and the dock connector will get crumbs and dirt in it. How is this a step forward?

2/ See 1/

See my response to number 1

3/ How many times are we gonna have to say that iPhone OS is capable of multitasking. It is a matter of allowing it, which will come along OS4.

I dont care if it is capable or not. When the ipad comes out, I will not be able to run multiple third party apps. How is this a step forward?

4/ Helping killing flash is an asset for me

Actually, I'm gonna agree with you here

5/ Use the dock to USB connector available

Again...I have to haul around all that stuff around in case I want to use a peripheral?

6/ I think video chat has been left out of the presentation on purpose, and that it will make its way into the shipping version

7/ If you mean melting purple windows with yellow text, i'd rather not... Don't know what you meant though... OSX is not that customizable anyway

Some like tropical colours?

8/ I'm with you on this one, but i guess they went with letter boxing because this is not "only" a device to watch movies, and the latter may be better for the other tasks

No need to apologize for them

When will people realize SIMPLE is not necessarily EASIER?

This may be a great appliance for parents and grandparents (In fact, I will be buying one for my Dad) but it is utterly useless even compared to a net book for me. From my perspective it is many steps BACKWARDS in usability.

The thing that worries me is that this is the future of Apple. Apple is a gadgets company now. They seem less and less interested in their computers. For those of us who want the best user experience when we are actually doing productive or slightly complex things with our computers, I think we are out of luck.

We are not the mainstream. You are correct. But I don't see Apple abandoning Mac OS X. So many industries rely on it. Pretty much any and all creative industries (music, movies, design, ...)

As for usability... the key phrase you used there was "from my perspective".

Also... for everyone saying that the iPad is for consumption only... do check out some iWork screenshots. It's looks outstanding. A huge leap forward usability.

iPad is going to be huge for Apple and huge for Apple consumers.

Just like the iPod... just the iPhone.

I only hope I can get one on launch day... whenever that might be. The pent-up demand could make that difficult.

Of course, you're right. It is highly likely that it is going to signify a transition in terms of how we interact with media and information. It may actually be bigger than iPhone or iPod.

A bit stunned at the proportion of people wanting the $829 model. You could buy a very decent laptop at that price with a real OS.

I wouldn't be surprised if a large portion of these buyers already have a nice MacBook Pro or two, and want something different and better than just a "decent" product.

I think you might be dumbing down the average user. Most people do more with their computers than Facebook and browse the New York times.

Put a number behind "most". That will likely still leave many many 10's of millions in North America alone who don't do much more than use 2 to 5 apps, apps of the kind which already run on the iPod Touch.

I am still curious how this is going to work. iPad has no mouse. Using keyboard for typing while poking the screen for pointer actions sounds cumbersome at best. Besides the dock seems to be too light to support any "poking".

Also, all such surveys should be taken with a grain of salt. I remember when gasoline prices started rising people were asked whether they were going to switch from SUVs to smaller vehicles. The majority of Americans replied that that was never going to happen because SUVs were essential to their lifestyle. Well, one year later SUV sales collapsed. Answer an abstract question is one thing having money in a bank is a totally different one :D

It's funny how almost everyone says the iPad is lame and that it lacks this and that

Yep, it's become 'cool' to laugh at it. The majority of British current-affairs 'comedy' shows such as 8 out of 10 cats or News-wipe have taken the mickey out of it, to put it politely.

When you look closely at Jobs' valiant return to Apple, you can tell he has been building up to this for years and years. The iPod touch and the iPhone were almost trial runs (admittedly they are very successful alone) of the iPad, a way of testing the market's response to multi-touch. The newton message pad could very much be considered a trial of the iPad too, although Apple learnt more from it's flaws.

The image of a salary man typing on two keyboards comes to mind.

Typical Silicon Valley home might have 3 to 6 laptops: home laptop, 2 work laptops for the couple, laptops for each school/college kid, Windows laptop nobody turns on because of some malware problem, old G3 iBooks or 486 towers in the garage that the wife complains needs to be thrown out, etc.

I love the continued nonsense from the naysayers. And in particular I also love other people telling me what I can or cannot, should or should not do.

Well naysayers, I'll be using my iPad as my primary computer on Day 1. How do you like them Apples?

As for what the naysayers will say when zillions of iPads sell in year 1, and (gasp!) when they themselves buy one, they'll no doubt point to a particular feature or application which gets added b/t now and launch, or released in Year 1, and say, "See I knew it'd be a big hit only after they added [X]."

Your credibility: gone.

We can tell by your signature "I have a mac and an iPod, why would I need anything else?" that you are the kind of person that assumes every Apple product is targeted at them. The kind of person that says "What? No multitasking? The iPhone will never sell enough to make a profit."

I know that next-generation models always improve on the first, but the iPad as it is now is "good enough" for what I want it to do. By buying now, I'll have an extra year of enjoying the iPad and all it can do NOW, and if part of my experience includes acting as "guinea pigs" for improving the device, that's a reasonable compromise I'm willing to make.

Exactly! And I have no doubt that I'll be able to unload this on eBay for $250 - $300 when new models comes out in a year. Should I decide to upgrade I'll have been able to play with mine (that sounds bad) for about $17 a month. Worth it to me. And maybe I'll hate it and not even buy a better one later; but I doubt that.

I think that $499 entry fee has a lot of people thinking like I do...

Forum: 1. a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged

I would like to know, what are your computing needs? If you mainly do emails and the surf the web, I think the ipad could be used as a primary computer. My computing requirements are: emails, movies, surf the web, write reports, 3d modelling, architectural drafting, and graphics production, and also mobility

We probably have different computing needs. Hence, from my view this isn't a computer, but a large ipod touch.

Except that they aren't. Apple are the only one's doing it right with this kind of tech. You'll find out exactly why soon enough.

I remember that survey! People were using all kinds of reasons to justify why using a SUV was ESSENTIAL to their very lifestyle. Suddenly, reality reared its ugly head.

I suspect that the high end iPad models may not sell as well as the survey showed... lots of wishful-thinking buyers on that end. A year from now, when all the smoke clears away, people are going to have a better idea of which model makes the most sense.

So, how many iPads do you guys reckon Apple will sell in the first 6 months?
More than the original iPhone, or fewer? Make your bids, please.

According to the numbers I could find, the iPhone sold 3,7 million units in the first six months.

I think the iPad will exceed that number.

Sold Out!

I've got to agree that iPads will do most of what most people do with laptops and do it better. Email, browsing, ereading, Pages & Numbers with import and export of Word and Excel. Maybe we will see a simple photoediting app. I would love a version of TextWrangler and maybe an ftp app like Cyberduck to maintain websites. All sound pretty doable.

Don't need multi-tasking, or visible filesystem, but maybe a file handover mechanism between apps. Will definitely get one as soon as possible.

Worried that the Apple Stores will be sold out in early April. Guess we will see the "availability" chart every day on the Apple site to tell us which stores have what inventory as we saw with the iPhone on first release.

Exceed it, easy.

Garion, is that your real name or just your MR handle?
