Ummm, let me see....
Tweaking a programming language until kingdom come—

Or

Developing new software that will control autonomous cars which some day will fill out roads.

Which one sounds more fun?

But this is the most solid news yet that Apple's so-called car project (or myth) is doomed. Something is rotten in Cupertino.

Dang, just as soon as I was going through with Swift development. The man seems very talented.

Chris is an incredible guy and an excellent computer scientist. As far as I am concerned, his name is up there with the greatest minds who contributed to understanding of programming as we have it now. I wish him all the best in his career and hope that we will continue to have these nice discussions on the Swift mailing lists :)

This is a big loss.

The stuff around Swift compiler, LLVM, etc. was one of a few last remaining truly exciting tech Apple produced in house. Perhaps together with A-series silicon designs.

Now we have billion dollar company that cannot innovate anything apart for reducing batteries and removing features of existing products. A company that struggles to find resources to produce a simple wireless router. How they can think about making a car?

And here come the flood of not-so-witty remarks: why Apple is doomed, why Tim should be fired, and why the new MacBook Pro is a failure.

Are you a fan of the new MPB. Are you super happy there isn't a pesky magsafe connector. Are you elated that the battery isn't even close to 10 hours when using actual Pro apps?

One has to assume he left because the company he worked for couldn't provide him an acceptable desktop computer for his work.

One has to assume that people make baseless and illogical comments on Internet forums because they lack an acceptable level of intelligence.

Major blow for Apple.

Yes because the other 80 thousand employees at Apple can't assume his responsibilities, individually or collectively.

Tesla! You would think that Space X would need someone of his talent even more! Tesla is nothing compared to manned space flight to Mars!

Chris Lattner is a brilliant mind and leaves good and bad feelings behind: On one hand, Swift is the biggest innovation Apple made since introduction of iPhone 10 years ago, on the other, unfortunately, the developer tools that he is responsible for are long years behind competition and Xcode is constantly very, very buggy.

Seems like both can and have been advancing different (and sometimes same or at least related) things in their own way.

However, reading the article indicates that somebody else is taking over the admin & leadership responsibility — you know, the boring paperwork stuff. And Latter has said himself that he'll remain a part of the Swift Core team. So if anything, he'll be doing more programming, not less. Management isn't for everybody.

Mind you, that's just the impression I got; not sure if it's right. Though it would be great if somebody who has something beyond a tired witticism could read the article and give their thoughts on the matter. God forbid we might end up having a polite discussion.

And its comments like these that show you shouldn't comment until you actually know where he was going. He's going to Tesla to be a VP of autonomous software. If you think he is going to be hammering out tons of code for Swift you are beyond delusional.

What language does Tesla use for its cars and also their fancy dashboard user interface? Does anyone know?

LLVM

Is compiler technology that helps tp optimize the code process.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/20/apples_other_open_secret_the_llvm_complier

"LLVM only just got started at the University of Illinois in 2000 as a research project of Chris Lattner. It was released as version 1.0 in 2003. Lattner caught the attention of Apple after posting questions about Objective-C to the company's objc-language mailing list. Apple in turn began contributing to the LLVM project in 2005 and later hired Lattner to fund his work.

Clang and LLVM-GCC

Last year the project released Clang as an Apple led, standalone implementation of the LLVM compiler tools aimed to provide fast compiling with low memory use, expressive diagnostics, a modular library-based architecture, and tight integration within an IDE such as Xcode, all offered under the BSD open source license."

It also appears his work on Swift was a part of this compiler process. So after Apple funnded him and gave him a position right out of university what will he be doing at Tesla?

Well Captain Obvious says he won't be designing cars, electronics or the latest cappuccino machine with his history.

This guy isn't leaving Apple because he wants to go to a "better" company or because he loves cars.

Tesla is building something with his abilities and skill with compilers.
