I freaking hate Chris Lattner. Hate, hate, hate, monstrously hate Chris Lattner and everything Duke.

/realizes this guy isn't Christian Laettner

Never mind.

On topic: Wish him well, in his future endeavors. Seems there's been a few leaving Apple lately.

edit after update: going to Tesla, hmmmm... alrighty then.
... and Duke sucks. That is all.

He'll be back soon - he was just suspended indefinitely.

And here come the flood of not-so-witty remarks: why Apple is doomed, why Tim should be fired, and why the new MacBook Pro is a failure.

However, reading the article indicates that somebody else is taking over the admin & leadership responsibility — you know, the boring paperwork stuff. And Latter has said himself that he'll remain a part of the Swift Core team. So if anything, he'll be doing more programming, not less. Management isn't for everybody.

Mind you, that's just the impression I got; not sure if it's right. Though it would be great if somebody who has something beyond a tired witticism could read the article and give their thoughts on the matter. God forbid we might end up having a polite discussion.

Hahaha, you weren't even fast enough. There were already some posted while you were writing your comment.

Agreed, but combined with recent events, still not the best sign. I fear some people within Apple are starting to see the writing on the wall. Some of them have been there a long time, made some decent money, and figure it's a safe time to bow out and start fresh with their own company or with a newer company that is more nimble. For now just add it to the list of departures and hope that there isn't an upwards trend.

My impression of the Apple departures is that many of those who have left the company were in roles where they did some amount of research. Good researchers publish their work and share with the community, something that is against the Apple ethos of secrecy. The secrecy is really starting to pinch Apple, and it makes it difficult for their employees to do any meaningful amount of work. If Apple really wants to innovate and produce great products and services, they will have to do away with the secrecy and allow their people to do their work. I will throw my opinion into the hat too, I think it is time for Tim Cook to go, and for a new CEO to step into the role. Apple is no longer a magic show, the way Steve Jobs ran it, it is a real, serious, mainstream technology company, and it needs to act as such. Make no mistake, Steve Jobs built Apple into a tremendous company, and did a lot of good, though it is time for Apple to move beyond the magic shows and secrecy, and act like the terrific technology company that it is

Love Tim Cook.

Keep up the good work.

I just love all the new products! Especially the watch bands. Great job!

BTW, how's that $100+ million bonus? Well earned!

I'm almost ashamed to admit I knew enough to get a good laugh out of that. :p
You should not be ashamed to admit understanding of basic references to Taylor Swift.

She is a phenomenally successful artist/pop culture figure, a genius at navigating the minefields of social media, a philanthropist, and an extremely savvy businesswoman.

To her credit, she also appears to be a genuinely decent human being. She's not the type of person to seek personal benefit at some innocent person's expense.

Plus, she's easy on the eyes and has a decent sense of humor. She also seems to have an impeccable (and sometimes quirky) sense of personal aesthetics.

Her parents did a good job raising her and yet she has made many excellent decisions as an independent adult as well.

You don't need to be a fan of her music to admire her as an individual.

Yes because the other 80 thousand employees at Apple can't assume his responsibilities, individually or collectively.

Nice strawman. This guy is incredibly bright and indeed some people are irreplaceable. Of course the job position won't stay vacant, that doesn't mean it is not a huge loss for Apple.

And some engineers are just incredibly valuable, I remember Steve jobs saying "Tell them I won't let Forstall even leave our building"

The good people keep leaving and we're left with the tired old crap. Not good. Not good at all.

Most likely what he works on next is a startup and will be acquired by Apple anyways in a few years.
Hopefully not, they wouldn't know what to do with it.
I agree that a polite discussion would be a pleasant change. The impression I got was that he was leaving to pursue somethig outside of Apple. In truth, we can only speculate as to what this means for Apple. It may be an indication of trouble brewing from within, or it may simply reflect the personal decision of a wealthy and intelligent tech guy who wants a change of scenery.
Apple, one of (the?) most well funded companies in the world, is also working on a secret car project which one would assume involves autopilot and all types of other techno-wizardry. Rather than stay with this company and pursue that interest from atop your mountain of money, you defect to their (arguably) largest (though not in terms of funding) competitor in this space (certainly tops for sexiest). This is essentially a vote of 'no-confidence' as far as I'm concerned. Tesla is doing some cool stuff, especially when you add in SolarCity and SpaceX... I certainly see the appeal there.

How do you reach that conclusion? he wasn't necessarily working on anything car-related at Apple.

I wonder if they designed the Swift icon after his hair.

Swift isn't so bad. I prefer C/C++ but it's not hard to learn. I wish the guy well and hope whoever takes over keeps the momentum up.
