And here come the flood of not-so-witty remarks: why Apple is doomed, why Tim should be fired, and why the new MacBook Pro is a failure.

However, reading the article indicates that somebody else is taking over the admin & leadership responsibility — you know, the boring paperwork stuff. And Latter has said himself that he'll remain a part of the Swift Core team. So if anything, he'll be doing more programming, not less. Management isn't for everybody.

Mind you, that's just the impression I got; not sure if it's right. Though it would be great if somebody who has something beyond a tired witticism could read the article and give their thoughts on the matter. God forbid we might end up having a polite discussion.

He is not leaving so he can focus on programming. He is going back to a senior management in his next position. His just announced his replacement , that is all.

I agree that a polite discussion would be a pleasant change. The impression I got was that he was leaving to pursue somethig outside of Apple. In truth, we can only speculate as to what this means for Apple. It may be an indication of trouble brewing from within, or it may simply reflect the personal decision of a wealthy and intelligent tech guy who wants a change of scenery.

It's probably a personal decision. If you look at his resumé, his technical expertise is really in compilers but he also has great management credentials. Car automation isn't exactly the same as compilers, which is what he's doing now, so he's going outside of his comfort zone a bit.

Why? Well maybe he was forced out of Apple for some reason or deeply wanted to leave. I very much doubt that; he's been there for a long time, and could easily have found another job within the compiler space. The major projects he's started - LLVM, Clang and Swift - are all open-source and widely adopted. It's not unthinkable that he could have gone to a non-competitor like IBM, for instance, if getting out of Apple was all that mattered.

It's all just speculation, of course, but I'd bet the lure of cracking autonomous driving was too big to pass up. This technology is materialising from sketches and hitting the road extraordinarily quickly, and it's a huge challenge and opportunity. Maybe private life factored in to it, too - who knows?

He's done so much good for Apple's platforms; we're all really lucky to have had him. If you're old enough to remember what developing on the Mac was like before Swift, before ARC, before LLVM and Clang, you'll know what I mean.

This is sad but sometimes its time to work on something else. He did great with the Swift language.

One has to assume that people make baseless and illogical comments on Internet forums because they lack an acceptable level of intelligence.

Yes because the other 80 thousand employees at Apple can't assume his responsibilities, individually or collectively.

One has to assume some readers of forum posts cannot understand underlying humor and criticism due to lack of their ability of abstract thinking.

All the super-smart people are leaving Apple. Apple's now going to "diversify" by hiring more idiots.

Thanks for everything Chris! LLVM and Swift truly revolutionized Mac ecosystem. You will be missed.

What language does Tesla use for its cars and also their fancy dashboard user interface? Does anyone know?

As far as I know, it's Android based, so mostly Java currently. Although there were all those rumours last year at Google.io that Google was considering making Swift a first class language for Android (Still got my fingers crossed for that).

Love Tim Cook.

Keep up the good work.

I just love all the new products! Especially the watch bands. Great job!

BTW, how's that $100+ million bonus? Well earned!

TTFTC (Time to fire The Cook)

Breitbart is that way bro.

Is Chris Lattner a victim of the development team merger? I don't know. But the way he left Apple, this easy, that may also be an indication that Apple has no future plans in the automative direction. At least not for Chris Lattner. Not in the same role he sees himself in the near future. To me a missed opportunity for Apple.

About his involvement wth OSS projects. I don't think that much will change. Once you start with it, then it becomes a part of you.

@Chris Lattner: Thank you for all your hard work at Apple.

So did Apple not let him take a similar role at Appe? is Project Titan shelved?

Yes, Apple scraped their car division a while ago and was rumored to make autopilot software but probably that's not the case anymore since one of their top employees left to work with Tesla on autopilot software.

I sincerely hope (and pray) this means the death of god-awful swift as well.

The most disasterous "kitchen-sink" unstructured language in modern times.

Apple could have done SO many things to improve obj-c. Instead they gave it to rainman to make something more clever than usable.

Goodbye Chris....

Dear GOD, please, goodbye swift

Apple is making the best physical products in their existence (much of it evolutionary, but stiil the best.

The droning on about how wonderful swift is leads me to believe about 0.01% of all internet posers write commercial code that does much more than flappy birds.

"Look ma! A calculator!"

The "easier" you try and a happy friendly compiler the more impossible you make it to develop serious commercial level software.

Is swift about teaching inner city kids basic logic (which traditional education should teach them?) or trying to convince joe bob that he too has the brain power and wherewithal to write ERP integrated apps?

JavaScript works - it is for people who want to write script for websites. It does its job well. It functions happpily within the playspace of browsers.

Swift is not javascript. It pretends to be a happy face on mean and difficult coding paradigm involving complexities javascript cannot fathom.

This does not work

I'm not sure, but he's going to be the VP so I wouldn't expect him to be down in the weeds writing code. Maybe they want to create a new platform to run their Autonomous Software and want him to lead it, idk...

Well Captain Obvious says he won't be designing cars, electronics or the latest cappuccino machine with his history.

This guy isn't leaving Apple because he wants to go to a "better" company or because he loves cars.

Unless you personally know him, I'm not sure you can make that statement. Maybe he had been at Apple long enough to see the change of the tide and jumped ship while he had a better opportunity with a better company.

He designed the 2016 MacBook Pro's, huh?

At Tesla, will he remove the gear shift and make you use an adapter to switch gears?

My impression of the Apple departures is that many of those who have left the company were in roles where they did some amount of research. Good researchers publish their work and share with the community, something that is against the Apple ethos of secrecy. The secrecy is really starting to pinch Apple, and it makes it difficult for their employees to do any meaningful amount of work. If Apple really wants to innovate and produce great products and services, they will have to do away with the secrecy and allow their people to do their work. I will throw my opinion into the hat too, I think it is time for Tim Cook to go, and for a new CEO to step into the role. Apple is no longer a magic show, the way Steve Jobs ran it, it is a real, serious, mainstream technology company, and it needs to act as such. Make no mistake, Steve Jobs built Apple into a tremendous company, and did a lot of good, though it is time for Apple to move beyond the magic shows and secrecy, and act like the terrific technology company that it is
The real problem with the magic show thing is that you need a first rate magician...

If my ship was sinking I'd jump too.

on a serious note good luck to him... I like Tesla and what they're doing. Hopefully he brings some more inspiration.
