Got the last one this morning at the Deerfield Beach, FL Marshalls. They had 25 of them yesterday. TJ Maxx was a few doors down and never got any.

I went to Marshalls in Aventura & N. Miami Beach but nothing...
I guess I need to check out Marshalls in Broward County...

only on east coast

hey everyone; i visited 3 tjmaxx's today here in orange county, ca and all 3 said the same thing... this is only a east coast promo.. none will be available on the west coast... sux!

St.Louis

Here in St.Louis, MO, they had them at a local TJ Maxx store but quickly sold out.

Bad news if you live in the Metro Atlanta area. That market did not and will not get any. The store manager I talked to said all of the iPads have been allocated and none came to the Atlanta area.

Went to my TJ Maxx. They said that they had 17 last yesterday, but that they sold out in one day. I called 2 other TJ Maxxs. Both said they had some, but sold out quickly.

Is this really such a big deal, enough to freak out over? 20% off? The thing is still overpriced in my opinion.

I can't really afford an ipad being a college student and all. So i've been saving up my reward points for my credit card. Turns out Marshalls/TJ Maxx is on the gift cards, and i could have a $400 giftcard there. To bad, it takes 2 weeks to get it. Very miffed.

Are you serious? 20% off the iPad is HUGE! Apple employees get a WHOPPING 0% off on iPads and iPhones.

Southern NH, and MA availability

I picked one up today in Plaistow, NH and that's the last of the 15 they received. There are about 8 stores in the North Shore MA and Southern NH area and all are sold out and all think it's the last shipment they'll get in. Sounds like we have to try and call these places daily and see if they get anymore in.

What a deal

How many 10" tablets cost $399? In fact, how many 6" or even 4" tablets cost $399 or below? I can only name a couple, and they're mostly considered garbage even by Apple haters. If you have a smartphone, it's unsubsidized price is most likely over $400.

Even if this wasn't an apple product and was just made by a random chinese company, a 10" capacitive tablet with aluminum casing and a 10 hour battery at $399 is a deal. Of course you can find resistive tablets with plastic casings with poorer battery life for less.

did anyone else notice that the moment this story broke, all reference to 'refurbished ipad' disappeared from the apple.com store page?

they have been up there for a month or more, and now nothing. no link, no out of stock, just gone. wonder if there is a connection?

You don't really think Apple is going to have trouble unloading existing inventory, and is willing to cut the price this much this far ahead of launch, do you? Come onnnnnn. Coooommme ooooonnnnnnn. They've got at least 4 months, probably 6. They have the hottest device on the market, just released in multiple countries where it's huge. They could jack up the price another $100 and still clear the shelves.

This 10" iPad cost $270 to make. Look it up. Apple is NOT losing money with this.

hahahah the amount of haters, passive-aggressives in this thread is hilarious

Rock on to everyone who got a good deal ( i just hope you guys aren't ebay scalpers )

Just want to confirm this great deal. I got mine at the Warwick, RI location. $399 and it's brand new in retail packaging. It's NOT a refurb as some have said. Makes you wonder why Apple can't at least offer them for $399 if TJX can.....

they must be refurbished or something. nothing else really makes sense

My theory is Apple is trying to kill 2 birds with one stone, WHILE still not dragging the Apple brand through the gutter called 'price war'.

1st bird:
Get rid of low end iPads before 2nd generation comes out. When the 2nd Gen iPads come out, higher end 1st Gen iPads can move down to the cheapest iPad slot.

2nd bird:
Their 2nd goal is keeping fence sitters from going over to competitor's camp, and this ties into the fact that this is the FIRST Thanksgiving/Christmas since the release of iPad.

There are people who are sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to get iPad or one of the competitors this Christmas, either as a gift for self or others. They are waiting to see reviews from initial buyers of Samsung Galaxy Tab OR better price/2nd-Gen iPads to be released. Considering this is THE FIRST Thanksgiving/Christmas since iPad was released, Apple selling a huge number of iPad in this season is important as it will determine whether Apple can dominate the Tablet market or not in the foreseeable future.

A tablet bought this Christmas will probably be the first tablet in the hands of a casual user, not a die hard apple user. And the casual tablet user will probably stay with the OS/platform that he gets on his first tablet. And Apple needs such casual users to sell lots of their stuff, since they can only have so much die hard Apple users. They've learned their lessons from iPhone.

As success of iPhone was a hugely important factor for Apple in every sense (the tipping point in creased brand recognition/stock-price/the helo effect), they know iPad is another important step to the next big wave of Apple, mainly media consumption market such as TV/movie/book. Dominating and locking in the tablet market thorough this Thanksgiving/Christmas is very very important for Apple

If Apple somehow fails to grab significant portion of next wave of tablet buyers (which will come this Thanksgiving/Christmas season), that means their grip on the tablet market will be loosened as more competitors release their products. They won't beat Apple obviously but still Apple won't be happy with nothing less than a complete domination of the tablet market.

So you ask but how many can they really sell through these limited number of stores to make a difference? Apple doesn't HAVE to sell huge numbers of iPads through these 3rd tier channels. But this gesture alone puts DOWNWARD price pressure on their competitors who will probably be forced to lower their prices, and Apple can continue pointing their fingers at the competitors' tablets and say, see they are cheaper and therefore are inferior to what we sell, the iPads.

BRILLIANT marketing team I must say.

Maybe apple trying to sell as many iPads before the release of the second? Maybe smart trying to avoid any kind of loss on the hopefully soon to be old iPad :) were waiting Mr. Jobs!!

It makes sense to believe Apple gave Its tacit approval to TJ Maxx as you say its a win win situation. Expect more good deals to pop up.

I bet Apple approached them FIRST and suggested that they do this. Who would say no? You get to sell 1st rate product and meanwhile bring in possible new customers who might actually pick up some other products AND get extra PR.

of course they are! i can't imagine a world where a company wouldn't be trying to sell as many products as they can...haha
