That's an interesting point. Perhaps this is a way for Apple to test the market for the price point of the iPad.

My understanding is that the iPad, is not selling anywhere near potential, there are plenty in stock everywhere at the $500 price point, while iPhone are still scarce.

This could be some test marketing for a lower price point for iPad.

I believe that it has nothing to do with Apple, it is not event authorized reseller...I am sure the sales would be higher with that price point indeed but i think apple isnt forced to lower price by low amount of ipad sold.

..and just like that the iPad revolution is over. Just like when Home Depot started carrying plasma/lcd tvs about four years ago.

way to kill the brand, apple.

Plasma and LCD tv's aren't a brand nor have they been killed. Keep working at it though.

I was able to pick up three of them, each for $399 at a Marshalls in Florida. I checked their serial numbers and it shows that they're not registered. (which means they're new, it takes a day or two to have the iPad show up as registered after having bought one)

Anybody know which stores in Florida?

Just came back from my local TJ Maxx... first time I've ever been there. Probably the most ghetto store I've ever been to. Needless to say, they didn't have any iPads. They probably would have laughed me out of there if I asked.

What makes it a ghetto? The people who work there? Or the location of the store?
Either way you need to spend some time in the real ghetto to appreciate it.

I got 2 iPads yesterday @ the TJ Maxx store in BG, KY. I bought one, my friend bought the second one for me. They had 10, in original packaging but since they are presents for my kids I didn't open them yet. If for any reason there is something wrong with them I can allways call in warranty. I think.

TJ Maxx does NOT advertise any brands, it's one of the reasons they can do this, not directly to compete with the big chain stores. Unless they get OK from the originator.

Talked to a nice lady at the Dallas TJ Maxx. She said that the deal was a regional thing and the entire state of Texas would not be getting any iPads. However, Arkansas and Oklahoma would be.

This is legal? Doesn't this squash any form of competition? It seems like Apple (and companies I won't mention here) have a vice-like grip on pricing and retailers are bullied into selling at those prices. I don't see this with LCD TV's for example...... Don't want to start an argument about this, it's same here and with other more esoteric goods. No competition, all those retailers just decided to sell at the same price, pure coincidence of course.

It is common practice with cameras as well. Go to Adorama or B&H and you will see many things from Canon and Nikon where you have to add the item to your cart to see the selling price. I am guessing this is walking a fine line where their contract with the manufacturers is concerned but they are large enough to get away with it. If you check the price for something like the Canon 7D or the Nikon D300s I doubt you will see a significant variation in price among most outlets. This is why Adorama and B&H offer bundle deals so that they can sweeten the pot.

The same is true with products from Dyson. You almost never see them on sale, but you will often see deals where if you buy one you get a $50 gift card or something like that.

No iPads at TJ Maxx or Marshalls West of Colorado

Confirmed by several managers this morning. They have all received communication from corporate letting them know that no stores west of Colorado will get any iPads.

No T.J. Maxx or Marshall's within a half hour of Utica has had any iPads at all. They must have thought I was nuts. They half laughed when I asked. :p

Sure would have liked to pick one up though, but looks like I'll just wait until iPad 2.

Yeah, it's been legally upheld in the golf business at least. If you violate the terms of the MAP (minimum advertised pricing) contract, you cannot buy directly from the manufacturer anymore. That doesn't mean that you cannot sell their product anymore, it just means that they (the manufacturer) will not supply you with it. You could still possibly get it from a 3rd party (but will pay even more for it), and the manufacturer will not honor any warranty claims for said product submitted by an unauthorized retailer (again, this is in the golf club/equipment industry). For instance, if I lost a PING account, but still obtained PING equipment through a 3rd party, I cannot submit warranty claims for any defective PING equipment that a customer purchases from me. And with golf equipment, the consumer typically has to have the place of purchase (in this case, my golf course) submit a warranty claim for them, as the manufacturers typically don't deal direct with customers. So I wouldn't be able to warranty something that my customers purchased from me if I lost my reseller authorization by not abiding to the MAP contract. For anyone interested, I can provide a copy of what one of those agreements looks like (for those in the thread that have questioned its legality).

I have been actively looking on CraigsList for the past few weeks to find a decent deal, and found this a little too late. Called close to about a dozen stores in the Cleveland area, and a few didn't get any in, and the rest all sold out yesterday. Damn. I even played around with one for about an hour at the Apple Store last night as well....

I'll go back to looking on CraigsList, even though I am very hesitant to pull the trigger on one from there.

Just spoke at a manager of a tj maxx in Northern California ( SF Bay Area) the deal is only in the states of Ohio, New Jersey, and New York. the manager said the news had come to her via internal email. As confirmation a 2nd TJ Maxx store told me the ipads are only available in Ohio. The employee at the 2nd store did not mention the other limited states. None of the three Marahall stores in the east bay of the San Francisco Bay Area knew of ipads yet for sale, or had any knowledge of the deal. Their shipments come in via truck at930 am so this may change but I am doubtful.

Looks like TJ Maxx isn't getting these from Apple (which most of us already assumed), so it doesn't appear that Apple is "dumping old stock" to clear out for a new product as some have speculated. If they were, they would allow authorized retailers to cut the price as well.

That seems to be contradictory to the posters here who have already purchased them in states other than those listed (Florida is one example).

Got mine in FL

Got the last one this morning at the Deerfield Beach, FL Marshalls. They had 25 of them yesterday. TJ Maxx was a few doors down and never got any.

Towson, MD: T J Maxx told me they would get them next week.

Really? I called that same one asking if they had them and the lady said "No" and hung up. lol Guess I should've asked more questions. Did they mention how many they were supposed to get?

Lol I can't believe there are people who actually think like this ^

I thought Apple killed the brand when they put iPod vending machines in Macy's?

he has a point, i thought apple were premium products, why are you finding them in ghetto department stores?

anyways i would rather have an archos 101 or a viewsonic g pad over the ipad anyday,

Obviously the manager does not know the whole story, as there have been several examples in this thread with proof that the iPad was purchased at TJ Max locations outside of those 3 specific states.

I made a rare visit to TJM just 4 hours ago and I saw one right near the entrance (rt 1 in Alexandria, VA - by the Target).

I breezed by figuring it was too good to be true. Box looked a little fishy, like a repackage.

I'm not in the market, but in hindsight I probably should have jumped on it for the price - good deal even for a refurb.

NOOOO! That's down the street from me!

Warranty

I purchased one yesterday at the TJMaxx in Woodbridge, VA. I opened it today and activated/registered it. I notice it put my warranty expiration date at November 12, 2010 even though I purchased it on November 18th. It's only a week so no big deal. I also notice that it said phone support was expired. I wonder what the deal is.
