It's 2016, all the 1's and 0's are the same, whether they be from tethered devices or not. SMH. "It's your data, shouldn't you use it how YOU see fit?"

The complete lack of LTE tethering is probably a deal-breaker. I rarely need to use it, but the idea that I have ZERO of it, instead of even just a few gigs, would make me hesitant. This part of the plan doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Obviously, I understand the lack of unlimited tethering, but why ZERO?

The Binge On is only going to get better once h.265 hits. The streams are not limited to 480P, but 1.5 megabits per second. Not sure why anyone complains about this. Seems like a good idea to spur better encoding plus it's optional.

I am giving my car away for free, guys! It's a $50.000 car!!! All you have to do is add my name to your property's deed.

I am sick and tired of all this BS the carriers dump on us. Every time a new plan is introduced by any of those dinosaurs, they seem to save money for you, but in fact you will be paying more.

It's optional in that you have to pay $25/mo. to avoid the video throttling :/.

I believe Youtube doesnt present the option as part of their partnership.

Edit: confirmed

So they basically gimp your device. WTH?! Have we fallen back into a parallel universe?

Line access (70/50/30/30) x4: $180
Add-ons (25/15) x4: $160
Total: $340

???

It's 320...

$70 per month. A second line can be added for $50 per month, while up to six more lines can be added for an additional $20 per month each.

70+50+20+20 = 160
(25+15)x4 = 160

So basically it's the same $95 plan they already had but you can get it for $25 cheaper if you don't care about HD video.

I could barely tell the difference between 480p and 720p on my phone anyway, this is intriguing.

Exactly. I just watched an MKBHD video toggling between 480p and 1080p. Noticeable difference but I rarely watch video on my cellular network beyond a short YouTube video and it's just fine in 480p for those situations.

Good deal, but I am still enjoying the unlimited everything for two lines at $100. That was the best promo to date.

You can't restrict everything to 480p. There will be many ways to stream HD video, I guarantee it.

Uh... no, that seems quite unlikely to me. It's hard to set up a website that streams HD video. It's easy for T-Mobile to monitor the amount of data anyone is using. If they see enough data heading towards you that it could be an HD video, they'll know who it's coming from and be able to talk with either you or them to knock it off, if someone tries setting up a service that gets around this limitation (what're you going to do - stream 9 SD videos all side by side that a specialized iOS app has to then reassemble into one HD video?)

Starts September 6th? Sounds like they gave away the date new iPhones go on preorder!

With no event announced yet for the new iPhone announcement and Sept 6th being only 3 weeks away, that won't be the pre-order day.

Pre orders aren't generally a Wednesday either.

Sounds more like they're releasing it in advance of the new iPhone.

Why the hell is this on Macrumors? It's only even peripherally related to the iPhone.

So if I turn on personal hotspot on my iPhone 6s I only get 2G speed? Is that the impact of 2g tethering is about?

That would be a deal killer for me. As would the +$50 for the first additional line. In the past I always felt that T-Mobile got it right for the consumer. Not in this case.

Agree. I still have unlimited speed up to what I believe is 6GB before being throttled when tethered. It works great for email and web browsing while on the go and connected to the iPhone, but streaming video eats up this data pretty quickly. Then it's slow and pretty much unusable.

Wish they would make tethered connection unrestricted.

Starting this weekend, I'll be paying $60 per month for 6 GB of data and $20 per line... so $100 for 6 GB of data shared between two lines.

And for $100 on T-Mobile you could get two lines with 6 gigs each, double the data for the same price.

Your complaint is that if you go from 3 gigs each on two lines to unlimited on two lines including tethering and HD video, it's going to be more expensive. Of course, that's the case with any provider (and some don't even offer the option of unlimited data).

how can they restrict HD video? Like if you open the YouTube app and try to change the stream to 1080p it won't let you? or what?

They use tech that allows them to monitor what you do online. Streaming video has certain signatures that allow them to identify it and squeeze it.

When your phone makes a request for video, T-Mobile can change that request to ask for the less-bandwidth 480p version rather than the HD one. They can also do things like packet shaping to control your speeds. When YouTube sees you connecting at slower speeds they will serve up the lower quality video streams to ensure you still have a decent viewing experience without all the pauses and buffering.

And...there goes net neutrality. So far T-Mobiles anti-NN deals have been in favor of the user, so people have turned a blind eye to the practices. This one is far more grey in terms of benefiting users
T-Mobile's behavior always made me a little uneasy. "So you're violating net neutrality, but in a way that benefits your customers? ... ok, I guess."

Now we see the endgame. What was once a toggle you could switch to turn off the traffic enforcement is now mandatory. You pay $25 a line to get that toggle back. On top of that, tethering at reasonable speeds (2G is borderline useless for tethering) is an add-on.

This is pretty much what we've come to expect from a cellular carrier, but it's especially surprising from a carrier that presents itself as being different than the others.

And yes, it's a requirement. So if you don't already have it, you'd just be replacing 1 identically priced bill for another... net/net for TV and a 40 dollar savings for AT&T.

Not an option for me since I don't have cable. And most people probably don't want to switch TV providers just to get a phone plan. Especially if they have cable now and would have to switch to a dish, which is the only ATT option in some areas.

I laugh at anyone who isn't grandfathered into some sort of unlimited plan that criticizes T-Mobile for ANYTHING. Without T-Mobile the mobile market would be even more ridiculously overpriced in the US. IMO there the only thing that saved people even on other networks from now having some affordable options. All carriers followed their lead to some degree even holier than thou Verizon.
