I'd be wary....
If it's bad IMEI because of a contract issue with T-mobile, then it was probably a locked under contract phone. If locked, it won't work with a foreign carrier and you won't get T-mobile to unlock it.
If it's bad IMEI because of lost or stolen, then as others have mentioned, it could very well be locked to the owner's AppleID and would also be useless.
Don't know if it would have any value as salvage parts, but I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Hi guys. If I will buy the ''device only'' from an apple store in US should I open the box and activate here? Or i should I activate back home in Romania with my local gsm? Because in one week i'm going home and i need to know that. Thx!

I will say that I bought a T mobile from apple store online and it WAS unlocked. I called apple to confirm from imei number and they had not a clue. I called t mobile for them to check if it is unlocked and they didn't know.
I checked my imei on a website to check if it was unlocked and it is. save yourself the calls/ wondering.
order from apple store = unlocked (t mobile anyway that i know of)

Hi I placed my order for T-Mobile 64GB Gold iPhone 5S around 7:00AM EST on September 20. My order still shows it is available to ship in October. I called Apple and I was told there is no information available when the phone will be shipped.
I read the threads from this forum and I know T-Mobile iPhone 5S is probably unlocked. When I call and ask Apple, I was told T-Mobile iPhone is only for T-Mobile.
From my work, I have Canadian Rogers Wireless account and I have to make sure Rogers SIM also work in T-Mobile Phone.
Just in case my T-Mobile iPhone 5S from Apple Online does not work, I placed another order this time for the same 64GB Gold iPhone 5S Unlocked from Apple Canada. Canadian price after tax is $1038, which is much higher than the US T-Mobile full price.
If T-Mobile iPhone 5S from Apple Online works, I am going to cancel my Canadian order.

I got a question, I have been chatting with apple and they said me they don't sell device only iPhones 5s. In November I'm going to USA and I don't know what to do cause I'm going to be there from November 23rd and December 9th and I need the unlocked iphone, another thing is they said me I need an ID, and my ID is from another country , I don't know what to do
Forget about asking for unlocked. Forget about asking for a device only. Get a TMobile which you will pay full price and you are good to go. I got a TMobile space gray 64gb in the Apple Store and paid $849. Got home, took the TMobile sim out, placed my ATT sim on the phone restored my backup on itunes and I had an unlocked iPhone 5S using my ATT account.
They said I need an ID and social but I don't have those, what did you say when you buy it?, what documents do they ask you for?
All they asked me was a credit card. I specificaly asked for a TMobile and said I would not activate because I was going to use with my ATT sim card. The guy tried to convince me it wouldn't work. I replied saying I had 30 days to return so if it didn't work I would return it. Then I gave him a small lecture about all I read here at Macrumors and he gave up and quietly told me I had done my homework so I knew what I was saying. The phone works perfectly.

I ordered the first night they went on sale on the phone with Apple for an iPhone 5S in silver for T-mobile unlocked (before they changed the verbiage). Rec'd it yesterday and put in a AT&T Go-phone sim card and it works perfectly! Lots of LTE where I'm at. I'm thrilled!. Go for it!

First time poster here on this site. I am currently using a Straight Talk sim card with my old factory unlocked iPhone 4s and wanted to upgrade to the 5s.
I read this entire thread from start to finish earlier today. I took the plunge and ordered the T-Mobile 16GB iPhone 5s from the apple.com online store this evening (10/02/13).
Below is a screenshot of my order. Nowhere does it say "unlocked", but I'm hoping you guys are right that these full priced iPhones come factory unlocked already, so I can use it with my existing Straight Talk sim card. I also travel abroad quite a bit and having an unlocked phone that accepts sim cards from other countries is a MUST for me.

I ordered one with the same intention as you, to use with a Straight Talk SIM. From what I've read in this thread, it HAS to work, but you have to cut your sim into a nano. And I ordered a gold one, and it doesn't even say T-Mobile anymore, it just says (GSM)
