You do not need to trade-in a phone. Spoke with an in-store CSR that verified a trade in is not required.

True, however, if you need T-Mobile to reimburse you for ETF fees, then you will need to trade in any smart phone that is working, is free from cracks int eh glass, and has no water damage.
