It's your data... you paid for it.

I remember when Cingular had this for voice plans back in the day.

Does 3 include unlimited tethering?

Nope, they've dumped 'The One Plan' and are forcing people to switch to much less competetive contracts.

The best tethering you can get is 4gb now. Still unlimited for the phone, though.

I'm liking these guys more and more... it's like Apple going after the big cables...

AT&T won't bat an eye.
Their golden goose is fat, dumb, happy and very alive.

But AT&T is significantly smaller than Verizon and can't ignore T-Mobile or Spring as easily.

AT&T is about 5% smaller than Verizon. That's not significantly smaller in my opinion. Verizon has also (briefly) been smaller a couple of times. They are fairly comparable.

ATT and Verizon only respond to each other.

Not lately. They've been bending over backwards to try and slow T-Mobile down.

AT&T is giving away data by doubling it at no cost. That's not being done out of the Kindness of their heart.

They don't like T-Mobile's upstart antics, which are working wonderfully at winning over customers.

If you aren't using up the full 1GB on your 1GB plan, you need to be using your phone more ;)

I feel like I'm in a desert for a month with a small canteen of water. I got so good at it I usually have a few hundred megabytes that would be nice to roll over.

Maybe it's time to just pay the extra and upgrade the data. Rollover adds a lot more value to that upcharge.

If only their network can penetrate buildings where rival like AT&T and Verizon can easily do. I would switch in a heartbeat!

Wasn't it Aerial, who was bought by VoiceStream and merged with TMobile that did the carryover for minutes used back in the day. Or maybe they were the "true per second billing" which allowed you to use waaay more minutes each month.

It was. And I had Aerial. Loved them and my mitsubishi phone :) True second billing was a great selling point and one that could easily be adopted by the carriers. I think it was accurate to within 6 seconds - but I could be wrong

Bandwidth hogs (of which I'm occasionally a part of) don't bog down the network for everyone, but rather everyone on their particular cell site.

T-Mobile has a long way to go until they get congested (not including massively-populated spots, like NYC (Times Square) and such).

I hope you're right, because right now T-Mobile is great for me. I'm sure outlying areas have poor coverage, but in the metro area, their coverage is much better and faster than Verizon's.

Yep...

This is the kind of thing he HAS to do though, IMO, because the truth is - T-Mobile falls kind of flat in their coverage area.

Where I live (in Maryland, right along the West Virginia and Virginia borders), coverage is pretty spotty. Yes, you can usually get a voice call through (except inside some buildings that block the signal too much), but data is typically only EDGE network speeds.

I *still* put up with it though, because of all the other ways T-Mobile is competitive - plus the fact I get good LTE signals when I'm closer to DC, where I work. (At home, I'm always on wi-fi anyway, so it hides the fact T-Mobile's coverage is weak.)

Agreed. This CEO is on the exotic side but I like his style. Verizon and AT&T are just theiving and he is calling it out and coming in strong. If they can make their network as big as Verizon or AT&T and posing threats to them, it will be good for everyone.

Oh my god i wish T-Mobile in Germany would do that ... Meanwhile most people are still stuck with 500mb a months here and i get jealous looks when i tell people i have 1,2GB a month

If you aren't using up the full 1GB on your 1GB plan, you need to be using your phone more ;)

Oh people would wish they had 1gb a month here. My sis has 200mb

I'm in the same boat. I freelance out of my house and travel to other cities for a few days when I have a project. So, I'm on wifi most of the time and then use a lot of data when I'm on the road. Still, I rarely use my 1 gig allotment and I can instantly change my plan to 3GB if I really needed it and go back to 1GB when I didn't. So I guess this deal isn't great for me if it means spending an extra $10/month to qualify. If it rolled over my 1GB plan it would be perfect because I would save up for the few times I need a lot of data on the road. Oh, well.

THIS! Finally! I have been wishing that you could roll over data, or purchase data buckets that expire only when used for ever- this is the answer to network congestion- people will conserve their data. This is truly a great move by T-Mobile.

I never really thought of it like this before, but we are essentially paying for a membership. Can you imagine paying a flat rate for the availability of a certain amount of electricity, fuel oil, or gasoline and if you don't use it, you lose that money?
The very fact that you have to pay extra for access to more data (Which you may not use all of), but don't get a refund for unused data seems a bit crooked.
Rollover data just makes sense. You actually get what you pay for.

Does this include my prepaid 5GB/month plan?
Yes, as long as you have it set to automatically renew each month. This works for the iPad data plans as well. You have to have the 3GB plan or higher.

Uhh, not quite....

Interesting bean counting going on.

They are gifting 10gb to current subscribers. What's interesting is that until that 10gb is depleted - no "banking/stashing" will occur.

For many - that kind of free stash will take awhile to deplete - meanwhile, they are collecting the same $ they would normally.

I don't have enough time to analyze nor the mathematics skills (I think) - but overall, they have clearly figured out that this is a great USP and reason for some to switch (while giving legacy members a good bone to stick around) but yet not REALLY costing them much money overall.

Those that are high data users will continue to be so, they are only getting a free 10gb - but then are probably still maxing out or getting close to their cap.

This isn't for the 1gb - so, those using between 1-3 (I imagine a large percentage since 1gb is considered too little, but 3gb satisfactory for a bulk) will still be paying for 3gb - just never really using it. And likely wouldn't have gone over regardless.

I am not knocking T-Mobile or saying this isn't great. But if you break it down - it's great marketing more than benefit to many people. My assumptions.

ATT and Verizon only respond to each other. TMobile is great except they have no coverage, thus they are forced to be more aggressive than the guys who have to spend billions just to keep their existing networks running.

Spoken like someone who doesn't stay current on the reality of the industry...

AT&T and Verizon won't offer this.

While they might not; it wouldn't surprise me if they did simply as a competitive move. Doing so probably costs them very little, if any money, while letting them say "we do the same thing as T-Mobile so stick with us."

I think the use pattern would follow roll-over minutes with people accumulating large data stores they will never use. They certainly could lower their data plans to use them while saving some money but most people probably don't keep that close track of their cell bill in the first place. The heavy users that go over or right to their limits won't benefit much, if any, from this plan and still wind up paying overages. In the end, it's a cheap way to say "me too" so It wouldn't surprise me if they did.

An extra $10 a month? You can't spare a few cups of coffee or one large meal from Jack in the Box a month?
