Wow
MacRumors posts more of whatever people click on most. They aren't going along with any joke.

In the big picture, there's a lot more to talk about than your personal issues with Apple's current computer lineup. If you saw that you wouldn't keep trying to make everything about your narrow view of the world.

Wow. So because I don't find emoji's news worthy and take issue with Apple's decisions that are effecting me and my businesses personally, I now have a narrow view of the world. As you can see from the comments section of almost every article, a lot of people are upset. People are asking, why is everyone so upset. I shared my reason to give insight to those that are asking. I never asked for anyone to agree with me but at the same time that is where I stand. I apologize for ruining the comment section with my narrow minded explanation and views of the world. You can now go in peace and continue your bigger than life discussion about emoji's.

There Apple what we actually need is more emoticons and politics rather than decent Macbook Pros.

And we can really hope that understanding what articles are about would be at the top of that list.

Unicode is about a lot more than emoji characters. They have to standardize a massive set of characters used by all languages, current and historical, as well as a large number of symbols. It has to work consistently across all platforms and computing devices to allow people around the world to communicate. Emoji is just one small part of that that gets a lot of attention because they are 'cool' and interesting right now, and they are being rapidly adopted. They are quickly becoming an important adjunct for textual communication in modern times since everyone has high-resolution color displays with them at all times. I think one reason is because emotion is difficult to communicate via short bits of text.

Thanks for the explanation and confirming that I am indeed too old and not using a new language. Jokes aside, I do see your point about it being a new way to communicate.

Fine... I'll start using them. Where is the old guy with white beard emoji...

How about sorting them into categories that actually make sense?

On a side note ... how come Macrumors, a site about APPLE is still not supporting emojis in the year 2016?

I rarely post anymore, but this is important

The Unicode Consortium has in recent years been demoted in the public eye to simply being "the emoji guys". This is incredibly far from the truth about what they actually do however. Emoji is a tiny portion of the consortium's responsibilities, and in fact, only because of... I forget if it's China or Japan. Anyhow, the Unicode Consortium maintain's the electronic standard for communication. This means they are responsible for standardising encoding of characters and symbols from different languages, such that a computer made for, let's say Arabic speaking people, will be able to render both Arabic, Latin and whatever other letters you might imagine, properly. And this is regardless of whether it's on a Mac, Linux PC or Windows. They all follow Unicode, and all characters are visible across all systems, because Unicode dictates how they are encoded, such that we can see everything. That said, how the symbols are implemented may vary, but the encoding and meaning must be the same. If it weren't, you wouldn't be able to see letters like å or ∂ on your computer if it were a different make from mine. Whenever the Unicode standard gets updated, it often brings major communicative and linguistic improvements that are deemed unimportant by the mainstream populous, because emoji... And because you're probably not gonna write in Inuktitut anyway. They are however not a governing body for emoji, but rather the governing body that controls the international standardisation of communication through electronic devices. Chinese or Japanese phone operators invented emoji, and because they needed to be visible on all devices when Unicode went along and standardised it all, they had to take emoji in as a responsibility as well, but it's far from their focus

Makes sense, so this isn't so much about specific emoji as much as they are being accepted as part of universal characters. I can see why that's a big deal. Thx

Apology accepted. Thank you.

No Problem. Now that we got that out of the way.... These are exciting times and I want to expand my narrow views by embracing emoji news. I'm hoping "Mac"Rumors can expand with a sister site called EmojiRumors. Now that I'm an Emoji fanboy, I would hate for those darn Mac people coming to a Mac site and interrupting my important emoji talk with something as narrow minded as discussing Macs... Which new emoji do you like the best? I like the pretzel one. I think I'll use that when I'm sitting with my wife at the game. I'll text her from one foot away and say do you want an "emoji pretzel"? Man... this is great stuff. I feel more educated and worldly already.

As a long time Skype user, please for the love of god, give me a "headbutting a brick wall" emoji. I think I would use this more than any other.

"We" (the world) get worked up about emoji madness because during keynotes, some multimillionaire Apple executive will spend like 10 years explaining all the delightful emoji variants all the while Apple customers grind their teeth together in despair praying for an updated computer.... Only to be left with flying saucer, shocked face with exploding head, face with open mouth vomiting, grinning face with star eyes, coconut, broccoli, pie, pretzel, sandwich, t-rex, giraffe face, sauropod (basically a brontosaurus), hedgehog, mage, vampire, fairy, elf, genie, zombie....instead.

I don't even remember them detailing new emojis during keynotes... Yeah sure, they talked about emoji prediction for iOS 10 during the presentation of iOS 10 features (where I expect them to talk about iOS 10 features and not new Macbooks anyway), but they never detail new emojis. They release betas and they are just there. And it's not Apple that say "Hey, let's create new emojis!". They just adopt the new version of Unicode that includes new emojis. They just put an image on them and that's it. They don't spend much time on implementing emojis.

some are ok...

Perhaps now Apple are doing so many, u loose track of what's new and what isn't ? Just imagine what would happen if Apple allowed everyone to create and upland their own... Good grief !! it would be a tidal-wave

Marijuana leaf, since its become legal in more states.

Also bring back the gun, seriously, changing it to a squirt gun was DUMB.

Seems the only thing that is consistently being updated in every iOS update is emojis. Apple are on top of it to implement them first like it's a big major selling point.
Seems like many other things are part of updates and it's just that some people chose to basically overlook it all and just focus on something smaller instead.

It's not Apple that's creating things, the Unicode Consortium decides on what's added, as the article explains.
