A very important factor not discussed is carrier promotions. On att and Verizon, there are massive promos for even existing customers. On att, with any trade in of iPhone 8 or newer, you get $800 in bill credits, essentially making the iPhone 12 free.
The monthly price matters more than the total price, at least for the US market.
And wth is with AT& being so much better. You could get a 12 for "free" (still have to pay tax, and you get bill credits which cease per a list of conditions) with an iP8 trade in! Verizon only gives $500 for an 11PM trade in. An 8 is nearly ZERO

Two windows ready to buy both tomorrow :)

VP of banks and Surgeons are not in the hundreds of millions. Those are in the 1% group and is not representitive of the wider base of iPhone users. Apple use to be considered a luxury brand, specifically when they built just computers. But that has changed significantly over the years, yes, expensive, but not out of reach. I personally am a testament to that. When I started earning good money, in one day, I spent 5 grand on Apple products: maxed out iPhone X, 13 inch MacBook Pro for my brother, iPad Pro 12 for my brother - smart case and pencil, Apple Watch Series. I wasn’t even earning what would be considered high income. But it was a lot of money to not make me second guess about buying.

What I realized for this is, these products, while high quality, are not necessarily out of reach for a lot of consumers, especially in these times. While I don’t have that previous job that allowed me to splurge, if I wanted an iPad Air and iPhone 12 Max Pro, it wouldn’t require much from me on my current income to buy it. Another proof of this, I was in a convenience store, and saw some buying stuff with a EBT card, yet there she was with an iPhone 11 Pro Max in hand. I thought that was really interesting. Thousand dollar phone, but you are food stamps.

For me personally, is, I am just not excited anymore and I am more practical about my upgrades. 95% of what a iPhone 12 does, my iPhone X can do too. Sure, 12 has more RAM, can record DOLBY HDR videos, but the fact is, do I even need that today or tomorrow? Nope.

if you are an Uber driver, you needed iPhone and still need an iPhone today.

we all pay $50 - $120 monthly for cellular phone service.

iPhone is an essential item. Apple makes 38% margin on the iPhone hardware we all buy. The cheapest you could have such technology would be ? Is this the gripe?

If you want a lower cost iPhone, they have new models for $399 or you can buy a used iPhone.

And it's just trickery. Purposely throttling supply so people think it's super popular. Ooh look we sold out in 45m....although we only sold 100k.

Except they report later that they have record numbers of sold iPhones

bye the way - your example of 45 minutes and 100000 units - how many per second is that? :). Ridiculous eh?

The upgrades to the base iPhone 12 (not including the ear buds and charger) are quite good.

The (here in the U.S.) +28% price increase of the base iPhone 12 is really stunning and I would expect it to cost Apple sales (launch day sales for the true believers not included), but we'll see.
The base iPhone 11 last year cost $699. This year the base iPhone cost $799 (AT&T / Verizon). That's a 14.3% increase. On other carriers or unlocked it's $829 which is a 18.6% increase. Where you getting 28%?

Personally, probably not. But they know there are many idiots out there in the world who do buy into the BS which could impact sales.
Reminds me of when I went to Wendy's and ordered food. It came up to $6.66 and the person asked if I wanted to add something to change that. Like... no.. why?

As an Apple fan, technologist (and fellow shareholder), I worry about the reputation Apple is earning for itself. And it isn’t “luxury.” Many of my family and friends left Apple because they view them as greedy and resting on their laurels. And these aren’t people who can’t afford it (one is a top tier surgeon who makes easily a half mil a year and his wife is a VP at a bank). Customers who leave on those terms aren’t easily, or quickly, won back.

An older colleague of mine is a top tier surgeon in his field and still uses an iPhone 5s

I think different people have different tastes, needs, independent of financial wherewithal

Have you seen the tech that’s packed into this phone ? It’s more powerful than many desktop computers. has more camera capability than many regular cameras as well as a wealth of other features people could have only dreamed even only a few years ago. Not to mention there is a phone at every price point now. Your family and friends seem to know very little about value, for such wealthy people.

I think the iPhone is firmly established as a luxury good at this point. Because of this, most people buying it are less price sensitive then would be the case for more of a commodity item. People that “stunned” by the price are probably already looking at cheaper Android options or some of the down-series phones that Apple offers to fill the value space. As a shareholder, I don’t think it’s going to have a (negative) material impact on sales. Demand is going to be very strong especially with 5G support that provides an element of future proofing even at the cheapest 12 mini option.

The iPhone is a necessity to anybody making over $15 an hour. The iPhone is a commodity. $399-$999.

and what difference will all that “desktop” class power make in the average person’s life compared to a phone 2-4 years old or a competitor? What new killer app takes advantage of it that a normal person will care about? Go ahead, I’ll wait...
