For nothing? You clearly have never designed an app before. Positioning and sizing content to fit within the current resolution of the iPhone can be a challenge, especially if there is a lot of content. Scaling up for this reason alone would be an enormous relief for app designers / developers and greatly improve the user-experience for customers.

I started in web design and development a long time ago (before everyone and their grandma entered) and remember the standard screen resolution was something ridiculous like 800x600. It limited the creative possibilities. As the resolution went up, the quality of websites improved with it. We'll see the same thing happen (to an extent) with phones.

More space = more creative possibilities.

Well I guess they're doing it for something then, aren't they?

Good point... but a tiny bit presumptuous?

The OS would still see it as a legacy app and run it 640x960. It has to be explicitly set that its an app that works with the new resolution.

Seriously, that's a good point. When I wrote what I said, I was explicitly thinking of an app I wrote for a class I was teaching to show autoresize, etc. I wrote ONE (universal) app without a single "hard-coded" pixel location or dimension. And it worked. This was "back in the day" before Retina ever came to us. (And it was a totally lame/ugly app... but it worked to demo this point.)

But like I said, your point is good. I obviously had to set the meta to indicate both iPhone, (and iPod), and iPad targets.

So, now maybe you're suggesting that I'd have to also include a "long" iPhone as a target? In the past, yes... I would have. But I had another post in this thread that I'm assuming Apple will do something smart here. I think that they'll make smarter use of 960px (h) apps on their 1136px space. Maybe they do make devs "check a box" that says "runs in 1136px" though, still. Will be interesting to see... assuming this rumor has legs, at all.

Does it not bother anyone that all this is, is a stretched 4S with different back plate?? are u kidding me? Don't get me wrong, I love the current form factor, but it's getting old.

All these perfectly fitting rumors, one after the other, are too...perfect. It's just way out of character. This has never happened before. And quite frankly, I don't buy it one bit. This is NO WAY the new iPhone.

Look for real rumors to start popping up in about 2 months. Rumors that show something completely different then what we have been seeing over the past few days. Those are the rumors I'll be looking for.

A part of me just died. This rumor is continuing too long for me to think it might not happen, but the last thing I wanted was a taller phone. My hands cramp up because it's not wide enough at the moment.

apple has been known to leak rumours to avoid too much disappointment. Not saying that's what's happening, just that you can't be sure.

I'm iffy on the bigger screen but the added space could be nice. I'm really looking forward to getting back to iPhone nation. I switched from a 3GS to a BB (biggest mistake of my life... some of my friends convinced me to get one for BBM) so I'm anxiously awaiting to get back to the iPhone:)

Hhhm,

Im also not sure on the new height. I can see that it obviously gives you a home screen with an extra layer of icons, and in landscape mode you get more keyboard, but there are times in landscape that you need more height for the area you're typing in (the keyboard takes up too much space).

Dont forget there were rumors apple were testing 2 models, this might be one and the other one might be the real deal that we havent seen yet in the wild...

If this is indeed the new screen ratio i see apple changing the keyboard layout for the phone in 2 ways:

1) make the landscape keyboard flatter (more real estate on the bottom would allow it).

2) enable a split keyboard capability like that on the ipad where the keyboard sits on either side of the app screen, and users could type with both thumbs without obstructing the main app window.

Future apps could also take advantage by moving controls off to the sides and out of the main screen.

I'm quite interested to see how they pull off integrating apps of the old aspect ratio with this new ratio. I think I would have preferred the same ratio, only larger, so I get a larger keyboard in portrait mode (how I use my phone for typing).

I am guessing old apps will still have the option to run at 960x640 on the new iPhone. They don't have to stretch to 1132x640 or whatever the new resolution will be.

If the developers chose, they may update their app to fully stretch to 1132. All the standard apps that Apple provide, such as Safari, etc will of course stretch to 1132 without problems.

I can't imagine Apple keeping this screen ratio and size for more than 1 iteration of the iPhone. So if they know it's not gonna be for the long haul, why not change it now before introducing it to the world? Seems like it would add to the complexity or multiple screen sizes that developers would have to program for.

I've gone through 5-6 pages and I don't understand why you guys are buying into this because there's really not much point to the slight screen size except for the pure pleasure of what a lot of people think they want, at the expense of developers working harder. It's not like the iPad where the extra screen space does make a huge different from an user perspective while using apps designed specifically for it. Apple is about simplicity and focus so the only one possible reason I can come up with is if all future iDevices change to a 16:9 ratio including the future iTV or whatever it's called.

just taller 4 inch iphone? LEAVING!....

In fact, if iphone doesn't come w/ multiple size, I am leaving.

This is getting bit silly. One size does not fit all of them. apple's head is still stuck in 2007... Back then, 3.5 inch was fine because smart phone was limited on it's capability.

This is 2012. Smartphone is everything. Make it MULTIPLE size. Offer something like 3.5/4.0/4.3/4.7 .. why the hell not?
Fragementation? who the f cares? Samsung is selling their phone like hot potatoes.... Who the f is thinking in apple land these days?

I agree but let me add a little polish to your statement.

Anyway you cut it Apple "must" increase the screen size, period!!! When you increase the 3.5 inch screen size the resolution must also change, that's a given. Why not release one standard resolution such as 1280x720p and come out with various sizes. I see no problem in releasing a 4 inch, a 4.5 inch and a 5 inch iPhone with all the same resolution of 1280x720p. The 4 incher would have the highest dpi and the 5 incher would have the largest screen while 4.5 inch would be a nice compromise between the two. If the 5 incher turns out to be a huge flop fine, Apple will sell more 4 inch models. I don't see the harm because the 5 inch is no less compatible than the 4 inch model.

Like you said look at Samsung.

Galaxy Nexus = 4.65 inch at 1280x720
Galaxy S3 = 4.8 inch at 1280x720
Galaxy Note = 5.3 inch at 1280x800

I'm not asking for different processors between the sizes I listed. Each iPhone could look exactly the same for all I care. The only difference will be the screen size and battery. And keeping the 640 part of the resolution is a mistake if your going to give apps black bars or stretch them out in the first place. If your going to crack eggs don't leave shells in the cake batter.

Apple has such a great opportunity to steal market share from Android. And it's a shame that people will buy this product only because it has an Apple logo on it and their so vested in the ecosystem. Not because the product is truly without a doubt kick ass. If the past is any indication we will see the same screen size for the next 3 to 5 years. Meanwhile Android OEM's have already displayed 1920x1080p 5 inch panels. 5 inch will be the new standard in about a years time and Apple will be stuck at 4 inches loosing market share because their too stubborn to do anything about. Oh, and what did suing HTC accomplish? Absolutely nothing.

I just don't think you can stretch apps and that's it. Everything else including pictures and graphics will be stretched causing it to look plan ugly. Sure Apple can use a 2X option for older apps but it will look distorted because only the height changed while the width stayed the same. Remember back a few years ago when HD TV came out. You had 4:3 ratio content on a 16:9 ratio screen. Made the people look fatter. Do you really want that with graphic content? You must rewrite the entire App to take full advantage of the new resolution. Same idea when the retina iPad was released but the iPhone situation will be worst because Apple only increased top to bottom. Stretching apps is the laziest thing you could ever do.

Dude take your tin foil hat off. You are way wrong.

I don't know if I will like?

Pros of bigger screen: movies, iBooks, internet, really just most things involving reading, and games, well pretty much everything. But....

Cons: Bigger phone, fragmentation of aspect ratios (mainly a problem for developers), somewhat awkwardly tall, and I think it just would look weird. But we will see, :apple: tends to pull it off.

I can't recall an instance where I felt inhibited by the current length of the iPhone screen, unlike the width of the screen which I feel makes web browsing particularly awkward.

It's not a problem that needed fixing, especially by increasing the length of the overall device on it's own.

To me, it's making the device unnecessarily longer.

If the screen size dictated the size of the phone then you might be right but it's not.
Every iPhone before this has had the same size screen but the size has always changed due to the internal components and the antenna configuration.
It's the same this time.
The next iPhone is going to be LTE and the changes in antenna and battery size dicated a larger phone. A larger phone allowed for a larger screen.
They could have left the same size screen in the larger phone but what would have been the point in that?

Apple really needs to capture all demands for different needs to become the #1 supplier of smartphones by offering different choices!! I understand Apple wants their products to be perfect and they almost have been.

It's truly amazing how Apple can release just 1 new phone a year and stay as a top smartphone manufacturer. I do want more options in screen sizes!! People want it!!!
