My original post was simply stating that for someone to skip a generation of phone based on a screen size change is ludacris because Apple is so determined to avoid fragmintation they will not revert back to a smaller screen size after forcing their developers to adjust to the new one. And as far as your pervious comment goes what did you expect when you refer to me as a "Newbie" if that is the case then what does that make you? Considering that your account was created 3 months after mine... Grow up.

I don't think so. In fact I'm pretty sure that wasn't what you said.

Anyhow, being an active member in the Tech community is not a negative thing . The fact that you don't have any valid points or opinions while I engage topics frequently doesn't reflect negatively on ME ;)

Anyways, it's just different.
And it might be actually a great thing.

They pay those design guys a lot because they can see something different than all of us. And it actually seems to be almost always the right decision.

Next time I will explain myself better for incompetent.

what's different about it? It's the iphone 4 and the 4s about a finger longer?!?!?!!!!!

This level of delusion only happens at apple forums...

After 2 years of the same design the "different" they can come up with is pretty much the same only longer and more disproportionate? What the heck have they been working on? If they sat on their but and just added a bit of longer screen without glass they 'd have come up with this. It's about 2 hours work on a cad program.

People aren't asking for bigger phones, they are asking for bigger screens.

Let me put that into perspective

OMG, that's so right.

I'm jus waiting how Jonathan Ive is going to praise the design of "the new" iPhone - design straight from 2010 or something.

And that round big unusable home-button is so 2007...

Maybe Cook is sat at home reading all this handwringing about a carefully leaked red herring. However I believe 16:9 will fit with the future direction of Apple.

Personally, I am not a fan of a taller version of the iPhone 4S. If this is the actual iPhone 5 it seems like apple is on cruise control for the time being, Im sure the internals will be up to par with other top smartphones, but I firmly believe this design can leave the door WIDE open for other phone manufacturers to gain some market share, again this is only personal opinion, some might like a taller iPhone 4S.

I really hope this leak doesn't prove to be accurate.

1. It just looks awkward.

2. Changing only one aspect helps with one thing only - watching movies. It still doesn't address the two biggest concerns with the current screen size - the size of the keys on the keyboard and the size versus the amount of real estate that can be captured on the screen.

First, consider the keyboard. In portrait view, you'd get more real estate to view while the keyboard was up, but you still don't address those who find the keys themselves small to the point that accuracy is difficult. In landscape, the keys could get wider to fit the screen, but then the keyboard would take up an even larger portion of the screen, leaving you with even less viewable area than there is now. Not a winning proposition.

Second, the size - real estate issue. Say you're viewing a web site or an ebook, or just a plain old email. Without more width a regular sized website will hold more vertically but still be too small width-wise to view easily. Turn the phone to landscape view and you'll have the same problem as with the keyboard - even less vertical coverage than there was before. Want the words of your ebook to show up bigger? Not unless you want one word per line.

Ask yourself - will you watch enough movies with that full screen to justify making the phone more difficult to use the rest of the time.

It's becoming increasingly clear as smartphones continue to be able to do more and more that multiple screen sizes are a good thing. Apple already does it with computers. It sounds like they are going to do it with the iPad as well. Whiy not have 2 sizes of iPhone? You could have a 3.5" model the same as the current one and a 4.5" "Pro" model for those who do more browsing, play more games, or just want more space for viewing and writing emails. But this change is not the answer.

I'm pretty sure that if they do this, it is to obtain an eventual universal ratio for all Apple devices and/or to cash in on something to do with iOS 6.

That being said, I would put money on this being a decoy. Last year a lot of people were all to sure about a "tear drop" form factor, to the point where case manufacturers were already churning out products. And then the 4s happened. I think this year we are being led to believe in a "stretched 4s" design but what we will see during the demo will be much different.

I'm with You on this one 100%.

THIS.

"Tim Cook: I think it's a privilege to have people that care about the company and care enough to write, care enough to talk, and care enough to send me an email and say "you're out to lunch on this thing" and "you should be looking at this differently".

I think all of that is great, I love it"

Not to take a Samsung noted reference, but why is it that must follow the Shepard, you can't disagree with an idea . Just because Apple makes it doesn't mean the people who like Apple have to like it.

The best proof of this, IMHO, is the third-generation iPod shuffle. There's a reason the fourth generation brought back the little clickwheel.

Change for the sake of change is pointless.

Something to consider: This could have just been a prototype bezel to test a touchscreen home button. The longer bezel would account for the additional height needed for where the physical home button would usually go; explaining the abnormally long screen cutout. We've heard rumors of Apple doing away with the home button before, whether it will be done on the next iPhone or not, I'm sure at one point they have tested the concept. This could have just been a prototype bezel for that.

Like it or not, fragmentation of the displays has begun.

edit: why so many negative votes? There's a huge difference between simply doubling the resolution in both width and height and completely changing the aspect ratio. It doesn't matter much for apps like an address book but it's going to be annoying to code for a third device with some kinds of apps like games. iPhone and iPhone Retina at 3:2, iPad and iPad@2x at 4:3, iPhone 5@2x at 16:9... if that's not fragmentation I don't know what is. Just saying "it's not as bad as Android" is no excuse, it's fragmentation anyway.
Hopefully Apple is just trolling and these are "fake models" to throw us off. I don't want black bars on my apps.

However, how do you feel about the daily operations of the phone which do not involve video?

Are you in favor of this form factor? Do you feel like being taller is better then but the people in the android world are doing with their phones?
I can't comment much because I haven't made up my mind yet. However, I do wish for a screen that is larger (in the 4.5~ range), so I would welcome both width and height increases.

It seems to me like one of the main things I have a problem with, is the fact that the landscape keyboard is going to be taking up the same amount of space if not more than the current phone.
Apple might come up with some nice solutions for a landscape keyboard in landscape mode on a wider screen. See here for what I've come up with off the top of my head. Apple has more resources than me, so I trust they'll do a better job than a naïve solution of just enlarging the keyboard to fit a wider screen.

Yeah but if anyone's doing this now, cause it can't have just happened in a boom all of a sudden so orchestrated with multiple sources out of nowhere, so if anyone's doing it it's apple (and this design is so ridiculous it has to be a decoy). So, at the end of the day if apple show up with something different they have also intentionally deceived us. It's a loss loss to them, either a. poor designed product, or b. intentionally deceiving the user community to present something different and "amaze" them.

I am surprised they didn't revert there change to the nano yet. The new nano is pretty crappy.

No wonder Steve didn't do it, that looks like crap. Too tall to fit in a shirt pocket.

And you know this is what the new iPhone will look like? Why do we assume every rumor on a blog is accurate? What amazes me is how many people are scratching their heads wondering WTF but at the same time assuming it's real and legit. Tim Cook says Apple is working on stuff that will "blow your mind". He also commented on no fragmentation for App developers. Jony Ive says the stuff their working on now is their best stuff yet. Sorry but no way do I believe he's referring to a 16:9 iPhone 4S with a two-toned back.

If Apple's next iPhone looks anything like the "leaks" we've seen, I will sell my Apple stock. That's how much I don't buy these rumors.

Taller? Noo! I want it wider too!

I hear you!

Yeah, if this is real, it's pretty sad. Please, give us a larger (wider, of course) screen.

This taller screen also means one thing... that they are gonna stay with the UI icons layout for a very long time...

They are just adding one more row of icons. This means that even iOS 8 and 9 will still have the same icons look...

Dreadful...

What's your point? That you are delusional too? I am replying to someone that said that that "it's different" and apple pays designers to do different things referring to this leaked phone design. He took it for granted that this is must be the new iphone and I replied to his delusion that there was much different in this leak to the iphones 4 and 4s.

I even said in a later post:
(and this design is so ridiculous it has to be a decoy).

I too find it very hard to believe that this is the iphone 5, that I agree with you. But you can't expect me to think that this is not a planned decoy, an orchestrated misleading leak from apple, that all of a sudden in a few days different sources are coming up with a certain design, and then guess what, wwdc and apple amazes with another design...anyway we'll see, hold on to your stock, and sell it later apple is on the -% for a while now , wait for the $650 and then sell cause they are going down in stock price after that for a long stretch in my humble uninformed guess. :)
