I personally think a taller iphone looks plain ugly. With all the really nice 4+ inch screens out there now, this seems like a foolish mistake. I've had iPhones for a long time, but if these rumors pan out, I'll be jumping ship and getting an Android

I can't comment much because I haven't made up my mind yet. However, I do wish for a screen that is larger (in the 4.5~ range), so I would welcome both width and height increases.

Apple might come up with some nice solutions for a landscape keyboard in landscape mode on a wider screen. See here for what I've come up with off the top of my head. Apple has more resources than me, so I trust they'll do a better job than a naïve solution of just enlarging the keyboard to fit a wider screen.

Yeah, I seem to remember you posting that. It does seem like an appropriate solution, however I would hope that they would put a numerical keyboard in the empty space.

Still...

4 inches is still too small. After being spoiled with the giant screen on my Galaxy Nexus, and other android phones being released, they are going to have to at least go to 4.3 inches, and make the phone wider. Games are going to be stretched to the maxx, making them look ridiculous. My dad has a Droid Incredible 2 with a 4 inch screen, and i have to say, it still feels verrryyy small.

Here's why these photos are not the real deal...

If these photos were representative of the next-gen iPhone, Apple would have inundated the originator of the photos as well as the web sites promoting the photos with cease-and-desist letters. Since that has not happened, and given Tim Cook's statements the other day about them "doubling down" on secrecy, I am quite confident that either these parts have no relationship to the next-gen iPhone or they are controlled misinformation leaks.

The next-gen iPhone will not look anything like these photos.

BS, im married to it too, but if this is true new iPhone, only question I will ask to myself will be: Android or WP?, probably will try a WP, this has better ecosystem potencial to my opinion.

I think you should go with android. 4.0 and up are very polished.

----------

Don't like.

Was going to switch from Android to iOS, but I'm on the fence now.

My belief is that none of this is real. Apple is smart enough not to do this.

Unless Cook really is that different.

Go with android. You wont regret it.

It's good that you admit to not being very knowledgeable on this topic. I recommend you reserve your judgement for when you see the real thing.

For instance, the newly suggested screen with an aspect ratio close to 16:9 would have much less (if any) black bars than the current 3:2, since most HD moves are exactly 16:9.

If all Apple cared about was watching movies, they would have made the iPad 16:9. Look at how people use their phones and you'll notice that the majority of the time they are holding them in portrait and not landscape.

There will be NO aspect ratio change for the iPhone 5. These rumors are bogus.

I don't think he said that...

Which seems strange after Tim Cook specifically mentioned "One Phone, one resolution" the other day...

Sorry. On the iPad and too lazy to "do the research." But I think he actually said "developers won't have to support multiple resolutions."

Might sound nitpicky, but, to me, these are two different statements. Devs don't HAVE to support the new res. Apple will do something "revolutionary" with the extra pixels for apps whose devs choose not to optimize/redesign.

That's my guess.

People often talk about fragmentation without considering what that actually means. Fragmentation is a word often used to describe a product that has several different variations accommodating many different devices. Apple has put out many different phones in the past five years and it seems to me that with these changes come necessary diversity.
When you think about what it means to have a mobile device, and an operating system that accommodates all products being made by the company, you would have to be a staunch supporter of legacy support to demand a continuation of technology which is clearly five years behind the curve.
While there maybe problems with coding for android devices, clear benefit is support amongst a slew of devices which the consumer chooses the best option.

Some people here are saying that the taller iPhone is a good idea because it keeps in line with the current mindset of Apple, I disagree. I feel as though going in this direction is exactly what cripples Microsoft. When you choose to ignore the future, and embrace the past, you are going nowhere fast.
Would it be so horrible to create a wider iPhone that is easier on the eyes and makes consumers happy? I feel like this is the question that Apple should be asking themselves right now. What exactly does a taller iPhone do for anybody? If we are talking about pocket-size, I think most people with android phones would argue that the size is appropriate. Some people with extreme large-size phones like the galaxy note may have problems. But this is a new age and I think we need to consider that this form factor is only going to be a hindrance in the progress of iOS, and the iPhone ecosystem.
If I was to develop the new iPhone, not only what I make it wider and larger, but I would also reduce the size of the app icons. I would include widgets, and by that I mean running applications that could display on the springboard.
The necessity for continuing a legacy of an operating system which is clearly the same as it was when it began five years ago is distressing.
I hope to see major improvements in iOS 6, and I do not mean a taller iPhone obviously. that is not a feature, it is not a feature to upgrade, I don't feel like I would want a phone like the one I have right now but just taller!

As believable as these rumors are, remember last year we had leaks about a redesigned iPhone and we didn't get it. I would still be optimistic about a design different than this.

Just plain not true

Android is resolution independent. The layout engine was designed from the beginning to accept any resolution and scale appropriately (based on the resolution and the size of the screen itself). iOS on the other hand was designed for only one and later they had to add others. Unfortunately that means every resolution needs its own layout for apps and the OS.

Sorry. Not true. Your longer post (and some others on this thread) erroneously suggest that everything in iOS is hard-mapped by pixel location. Just.... not.... true.

The SDK provides rich APIs for autoresize. Most iOS devs I know are just too lazy to take the time to learn how to use them. Sad, actually, because they handle this exact situation perfectly.

just taller 4 inch iphone? LEAVING!....

In fact, if iphone doesn't come w/ multiple size, I am leaving.

This is getting bit silly. One size does not fit all of them. apple's head is still stuck in 2007... Back then, 3.5 inch was fine because smart phone was limited on it's capability.

This is 2012. Smartphone is everything. Make it MULTIPLE size. Offer something like 3.5/4.0/4.3/4.7 .. why the hell not?
Fragementation? who the f cares? Samsung is selling their phone like hot potatoes.... Who the f is thinking in apple land these days?

I've been due for an upgrade since the end of February, and like most everyone else I'm not so sure I want a taller device. However I'll reserve judgement until it gets released by Apple.

Last year we never actually saw parts leaks. We only saw case leaks from third party manufacturers. This time around it seems legit. We can all bank on the next iPhone being a complete refresh anyway.

The OS would still see it as a legacy app and run it 640x960. It has to be explicitly set that its an app that works with the new resolution.

Even if this is not the real new iphone, the amount of people that will have any badly designed crap such as what we see here and still go, oh it's great, these guys at apple sure know design, they sure know how to do things differently and innovate, and why change an iconic design anyway, and oh this will be great for hd movies (on a phone...) and they can even add a numeric row in the keyboard...it's just astounding... apple can literally put out a turd call it iTurd and people will still say things like well at least apple calls it like it is, other people put out **** but apple redefines it, and things like this...amazing really.

All you "too tall", "won't fit in my pocket" guys: how about measuring out the rumored 10mm and see just how much height it will add? For reference sake, a U.S. penny is 19.05mm from edge to edge. Imagine cutting that penny in half and adding that length onto your iPhone. Is that really "too tall" and "won't fit in my pocket?" Just one cm represents the rumored stretch.

I suggest going one better: take your existing iPhone and measure it's length & width (or here's the actual size per Apple's site: 115.2mm X 58.6mm). Mock that size up with something that allows precise measurements of shapes like Apple's Pages. Now expand the 115.2mm to 125.2mm. Print that, cut it out and lay it next to your iphone. Better yet, lay your iphone on top of the cutout and see the "atrocity" the new one will be with that added 10mm.

IMO, bigger screen is good... especially when the case size itself is rumored to stay so close to the existing size. Yes, there might be some black bars for some apps or iOS6 might make good use of that added space (for example, notifications that don't cover the existing app).

A few thoughts:

1) I would have preferred that the (h) didn't change and Apple modified the top bezel and lower bezel (reducing size of home button).
2) Wouldn't that be great if these leaked photos are just a controlled leaks to determine their security leaks and doesn't even look like the iPhone 5.
3) If these leaks are legit, they're coming fast and furious - so there's a good chance we might see something more at WWDC.

I don't know how I feel about this. What's the point if apps can show another row of information. In Mail, we'll see another email in the list view, in Twitter an extra tweet. I don't see how having a bigger device would justify that.

I really thought they would make the iPhone better by removing more of the bezel and adding more screen, keeping the phone roughly the same size.

The rational explanation would be that they did this simply to add a larger battery to accommodate the 4G radio.

Steve Jobs circa 2009...;) But if Steve had he been healthy and fit and alive he wouldn't think like Steve Jobs circa 2009, if he was something he was flexible and adapted to the requirements of the time.

Really...

I'll believe it when I see the new iPhone at it's launch even. Anyone with a steady hand and access to a thick enough clear plastic can fake that front.

And to respond to those complaining about fragmentation or lack there of who cares really? Apple is going to do what it wants to, but seriously do you think that if they make the move to a taller 4" screen they'll keep the 3.5" iPhone 4S screen around longer than the year it sits as the entry level option? Not that it would be hard to do considering the way they manufacture them, but still I don't see it happening.

Oh and do we really need to keep comparing all the iPhone sales to those of the different Android phones?? Yes they sell, but do people realize that the majority of carriers sell those as a buy on get one free or give them as their free option on a new contract?

What's your point? That you are delusional too? I am replying to someone that said that that "it's different" and apple pays designers to do different things referring to this leaked phone design. He took it for granted that this is must be the new iphone and I replied to his delusion that there was much different in this leak to the iphones 4 and 4s.

I even said in a later post:

I too find it very hard to believe that this is the iphone 5, that I agree with you. But you can't expect me to think that this is not a planned decoy, an orchestrated misleading leak from apple, that all of a sudden in a few days different sources are coming up with a certain design, and then guess what, wwdc and apple amazes with another design...anyway we'll see, hold on to your stock, and sell it later apple is on the -% for a while now , wait for the $650 and then sell cause they are going down in stock price after that for a long stretch in my humble uninformed guess. :)
OK my bad. I agree with you. And when I see many things that seem so unlike Apple I call BS on it. This isn't just a black slit on a stainless steel band. I don't know if it's an intentional decoy but I bet all my Apple stock this is NOT what the final phone looks like.

If this turns out true I'll reserve judgement based on the fact that at first I thought widescreen televisions looked odd when they originally began to appear, where now they are the norm. And also I wonder about the landscape keyboard - room for the number pad as well?
