before i read hes an apple repair technician right when i saw the picture i was thinking this thread might end up being renamed to, need help bulding macbookk from scratch!!!! lol

 I can't wait to see the finished product. I wonder if this same process will work for an iPod Classic..?

I see no reason why it wouldn't. That actually sounds like a really good idea. The only thing is that you'd have to mask off the display with tape or something that won't come off in the solution as you cook it.

I used 4 packs of RIT dye when I did mine. Do you think you will get the results that you want with only 2 packs? I also just washed my plastic pieces in hot soapy water before dying. Be prepared to leave your stove burning on high for 6 hours straight :p. My gas bill was higher then normal that month ;) LOL

Im going to go out to Wal-Mart later today and pick up a few more yellow and orange. Last night they only had 2 golden yellows, and they were $3.49, so I will get a better deal today.

oh.. so you first need to get the white paint off before spraying it another color.?

Im using the same method that OrangeSTVguy did, boiling the bare plastic parts in RIT dye. Thats why I had to gut the thing, I'm not ready to toss my assembled MacBook into a pot of boiling water...

Thanks for the comments guys. Ill take a pic right before I drop in the plastic later today and tell you all how its going! :D

I think he was saying that the only macs with clear plastic that was painted, were the iBook G3s...(and G4s?)

All others are molded white plastic.

So, soaking in alcohol, other than cleaning it, will do nothing. Why did you feel the need to do it?

I knew a kid growing up that liked to take things apart, and tinker. He was pretty good at it, but screwed things up from time to time too...he also liked to fart on his hands and smell it, so I don't know as though I'd want to be in that same class of folks...

I see that now, but at-least its clean now and I'm ready to dye...

Im 16, so I would qualify as a kid I guess. As for farting on my hand and smelling it... Im not that weird. :p

Just bought 3 more packs of Golden Yellow and 2 of Sunshine Orange for 1.50 each at Wal-Mart. Beats 3.49 each! I will get started dying later.

OMG
I would freak out
if that was my Macbook
but it should look sick when you are done.

Its in and cooking! Got my friend to tend to the MacBook on the stove for a second so I could post this...

I expect this to take a couple more hours (its been one so far), but it will be worth it!

OMG!!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE NUTS!!!!!!!!
(don't take that in a bad way):p
I hope that you can get it back together and working, because there is no way in hell apple care would cover that. Good luck!!!

Don

I voided my warranty the week I got it with a icolours.ca jel. If it were still covered under AppleCare, I would be the one to fix it...

Anyway, its taking the stain nicely (its going to be Tangerine when its done). All but the back of the screen and bottomcase are finished, they need another 30 minutes.

This is pretty insane! I'm really excited to see the finished product

Good luck getting that back together by the way. I know you're an apple tech, but that's still gotta be a heck of a doozy.
