My MacBook Pro 14" does this, and my M1 MacBook Air doesn't. They are both running Monterey 12.0.1.
I think I have found how to reproduce it. So basically:

It happens to me when doing "Command-tap" or "Shift-tap". Simple taps seem to be fine.

The first tap gets registered, the second one doesn't. The second tap actually has to be 3 taps. So what should be "tap-shift-tap" becomes "tap-shift-tap-tap-tap".

- If I release the shift/command key before the end of the 3 taps and press it again, the count of 3 is reset and I must start over. So for exemple it can become "tap-shift-tap-tap-release-shift-tap-tap-tap".

- If the selection ends at the item directly next to the first one (if only 2 items are selected, basically) then all works well. If the selection is more than one item away, then it happens.

- it doesn't happen at all with my Touch ID Magic Keyboard when I connect it.
- it does not happen on my M1 MacBook Air, ever.
- it only happens with TAPS, clicks are fine but I don't care, I am a tap person.

Ironic thing is that now I've been "clicking" my Magic Trackpad (supplied with M1 iMac) for a few days, rather than using tap-to-click, I'm finding that I may actually prefer using it that way as it has a really nice clicking action compared to previous Trackpads I've used... I've also discovered how useful Force Click is!

I've been using tap-to-click for years as the trackpad on my old (but still going strong) 2014 Air has a fairly nasty clicking action. Fortunately my Air won't upgrade beyond Big Sur - I was thinking of "patching" it - but not now I ain't!

Damn you Apple - you're messing with my head! ?
(But you really do need to sort out your software quality control...)

Also experiencing the same tap to click issue. Works about 70% of the time for me. Extremely frustrating. I was about to take my m1 pro back to the store, but glad to hear that others are having similar issues and it appears to be software related. The other thing I noticed is 2 finger gestures are atrocious with Monterrey. Try pinching to zoom in Apple maps. It works maybe 40% of the time.

Exactly same experience here. Tap to click not working half of the time was already frustrating. But on top of that pinch to zoom is incredibly unreliable on my 14" MBP.

For what it's worth, I seem to have noticed a slight improvement in the 2 finger gestures after disabling tap to click altogether (until it's fixed). Might be a placebo effect though...

I have the same issue. It is so extremely annoying that I am planning to go back to Big Sur.

There is an Apple bug tracker ticket for this but Apple does not seem to be able to reproduce the issue (at least the three Apple devs who responded to that ticket). Which is odd because it happens on my MBP 16 Intel and MBP M1
This is really cumbersome because if they say it is not reproducible, it will not get fixed any time soon. :-(

Quality control at Apple is letting us down last couple of years. :-/

Based on what happened to me today, I would say that maybe Bluetooth is also a culprit. Can you confirm if there is any mouse or keyboard attached/configured on bluetooth settings?

Today I wake up my macBook pro with the magic 2 mouse, inserted password, but the mouse stopped working. A Off/on in BT solved the issue. After another sleep/wake the mouse also wake up the computer, but this time the mac detected the mouse as a "ordinary" mouse without touch capabilities. Again an Off/on sequence solved the issue.

I didn’t have any Bluetooth connections and I’m still getting the tap to click issue.

When I turnOff the bluetooth and then turn it on again it solve the problem but not completely, you can say 90%

Same thing here. Even with tap to click turned off, and even with an external trackpad, Apple Maps pinching to zoom or rotate fails to register a lot.

Simple two-finger scrolling has problems occasionally too, like it forgets to scroll so you have to swipe again. In general everything feels like the interface is made of ice, like it's slippery and hard to get anything where you want it.

Would it be possible to post the link to that bug tracker ticket here?

I have both the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros that were released last week, and both of them are experiencing issues with tap to click only firing intermittently. It's incredibly frustrating, but I'm happy I found this thread since it's a confirmed software issue. It needs to be fixed ASAP though.

Downgraded to Big Sur 11.6.1. No issues with tap to click or preventing trackpad from activating when a mouse is connected. Monterey is currently a no go for me, as much as I liked it. Hope it gets solved soon, specially because of the new machines!

Anybody having tap-to-click issues on Monterey: could you try something? Go to System Preferences/Sharing, disable the Airplay Receiver option. Please report back if it helps fixing the trackpad issues.

there is a thread on Reddit where people say it fixed various Bluetooth connectivity issues:

I’d try it myself but I’ve downgraded to Big Sur.

I've actually found I'm now liking clicking on my Magic Trackpad... BUT since day one there's been an annoying lag/delay when using it wirelessly, so I changed the setting and unplugged it...

Sadly only fine for a minute or two - then the lag returned!

But thanks for the tip as it was worth a go!

Seems to not work. Just attempted on my 14" Monterey 12.0.1. Turned off Airplay Receiver, tested with Cmd+Tap to Open Link in New Window in browsers. Still experiencing the issue.

I thought it was me until I found this thread. I took delivery yesterday of an M1 Pro and the trackpad has been fighting me. I’m stuck with Monterey 12.0 until Apple manages to address this.

Happening to me as well on a new 16" MBP trackpad, as well as while using the magic trackpad. Glad to find out this is a known issue!

Happening on my 14" MBP as well. I don't recall this happening on the old Intel MBP that was running Monterey though. Guess I was just lucky there. :)

It seems to be doubly compounded if one does a keypress at the same time (i.e. holding down "shift" to bypass the trash folder for an email).

Oh I'm so glad I'm not crazy!

2018 15" i9 MBP, running a completely clean install of 12.0.1.

I've used tap-to-click virtually exclusively since its introduction (it's gotta be way over 15 years ago). It's engrained in my interaction with the Mac at such a low level that its almost startling when it misses a tap. Especially on items that normally delay with no feedback (some financial "submit" buttons for example). I'm constantly checking the URL bar in Safari to see whether a new page is trying to load.

This issue really slows down user interaction everywhere in the system. I've tried and tried to find some combination of window switching, button tapping, double-taping, etc. to reproduce the issue to no avail. I was even wondering if it's hardware, but I distinctly noticed this upon updating to Monterey. Since the initial upgrade, I've since done a complete wipe, clean install, and Time Machine migration. It is possible something in my user could be responsible; I just haven't spent enough time on a separate Monterey boot drive (new user; no migration).

Based on what I've read in this thread, it sounds like people are still seeing the missing TTC even on fresh installs (and upgrades to 12.1).

I will add my own Feedback Report regarding the missing tap-to-clicks. Unbelievable regression bug! Breaking core, [what should be] low-level stuff, is sad. At least I now know it is common enough to fill a few pages here at MR, and not a hardware problem (me being just past the end of my APP for my 2018 15" Core-i9).

On a side note, I had previously updated to 12.1, but it killed FaceTime, which I depend on (any attempt answering or calling resulted in coreaudio getting stuck at 100% CPU and the call failing. Before that, I did use FaceTime a few times but noted there is no GUI whatsoever for a cell call – no keypad, no nothing. Only way to hangup is quitting FaceTime. A FaceTime call does get a green thing in the Menu Bar, but it has no active feedback for ongoing audio. After trying to fix FaceTime (reinstalls, log out/in, etc.), I gave up and went back to 12.0.1 clean + migrate. I still need to write feedback on this one.
