In Nh stores, they only issue the gift card toward in store purchase at same time. You can't walk out with a card and if the model you want is out of stock, no deal. There were several folks that we're turned away. They do take ID info, so they can find out how you redeemed if there is a limit.

Other states and stores may be different.

Why are they doing this? Where do all these used iPads end up?

Yeah, wondered about this myself. There's obviously a certain amount of material you can recycle from the devices, and I'm sure many of them are resold in other markets where even a 1st gen iPad would be a significant device, but I have to assume that when you're taking $200 for even a 16GB wifi iPad 1 you're taking a loss. Most likely this is all designed to get people in the store, remind them that Target actually sells Apple products, maybe get some people to buy a mobile plan. In states like mine (UT) where they're not actually allowed to hand out the gift cards for trades it's also a guaranteed iPad sale.

I also suspect Apple is giving them incentive to do this, or it was part of the original deal to be a reseller. iPad 1 can't be upgraded to iOS 7, so I'm sure Apple wants them thinned out in the wild, I'm just surprised it's this important to them.

Is it AT LEAST $200?

WHat about a 64GB cellular iPad 3? I'm looking to upgrade to the new iPad Air.

They give higher quotes for later models and features. $200 is the minimum. http://targettradeinprogram.com You can look up their offer now.

I suspect the iPads will be used in educational programs in school districts. there is a demand for bulk amounts of tablets.

I traded my original iPad 64gb att cellular and got the 200 dollar gift card, but they have been sold out of iPad air for the past few days. So I could not use the gift card to buy one anyways. The told me the card never expired and I could use it for whatever I want to buy. With the gift card

Turned in 1st Generation Ipad Wednesday and went back to pick up the Ipad Air later that night. Paid $250 for the Ipad Air...

Target Trade In Progam

I traded in 2 1st gen iPads yesterday for $400. Bought a mini for $299 and got a $25.00 gift card as a bonus.

Note that the Ipad gift card is different from regular Target gift cards. Read the back of the card! The iPad card has an expiration date. Mine expires mid January. Regular Target cards have no expiration date.

Only Targets with Mobility stores are participating in this promo which I suspect is generally the Super Target stores. Check the Target store locator.

Good catch on the expiration date, but it says "Card funds never expire. After valid thru date, contact us for a free replacement Card." So you can keep the money after the expiration date, just need some hassle of replacing the card.

I traded in my iPad 2 and received a "Electronics trade-in card" which looks different from their regular gift cards. Yes mine has an expiration date too. But it works the same you can buy anything you want.

My local store (Colorado) did not give me any hassle. They did not ask me to buy anything on the spot, just took the iPad and gave me the card.

Really want to try and give this a chance... at the same time, I want to see what Best Buy will give me for my 3rd Gen WiFi+4G 32GB iPad. They are doing a similar thing that will go up to $350 in store.

I may be running around a lot on Friday/Saturday...

Really is a fantastic price. If you have an original iPad and want to trade it in for the $200 gift card, you could buy a Visa prepaid card instead of another iPad ($5 fee attached) but it's available if you don't want a new iPad.

I'm not sure if that's true. The T&C of regular Target gift cards say: "This GiftCard can be redeemed for merchandise or services (other than American Express® and Visa® gift cards and prepaid cards) at Target stores in the U.S. or Target.com, and cannot be redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law."

It's not as good as you think on eBay. 10% final value fee, 3% PayPal fee on the item+shipping total. Plus there's an insertion fee if you want to set a reserve. Take the $200.

Yes SO true. To sell a iPad 2 quickly on eBay you need to price it around $200. After all fees are considered Target's deal is better.

PLUS, target does not ask for box, case, charger, cord, etc. I kept all of my accessories to use with my other Apple devices.

I've been looking and looking and can't seem to find a solid answer: are they only giving $200 for iPad 2s as well? No more?

Thanks

The trade in gift card does not call out the gift card thing. But not sure if you can buy a visa gift card. It just says :

"Redeemable for merchandise or services at any Target stores in the United States or Target.com. ... Not refundable or redeemable for cash or credit, except where required by law."

Target.com says some of the new iPads are only sold online, not in stores. (I know you have to go to a store in person to get the $200 card.)

Question 1: Once you have the $200 gift card, can you use it online at Target.com? Or are you limited to spending it on models carried in physical stores?

5) Don't do the memory wipe before you go into the store. They need to see the serial number on the preferences panel. If you bring in a wiped iPad, you will have to reenter your appleID just to see the preferences panel. You can do a full wipe AFTER the Target Mobility guy finishes his data entry.

I don't remember the limitations of the iPad 1 and its OS... Question 2:

A.) Can it do an "instant wipe" the way newer iPhones can? (My old iPhone 3G could not: the erasure process took hours.)

B.) Assuming an instant wipe isn't possible... if you do wipe it in advance, what's the quickest way to get it bootable again to show the S/N? Can that be done without involving a computer or do you have to do a full OS install (minus restoring from backup of course)?

TIA!

worked like a charm

i saw the article on macrumors a couple of days ago and decided to take the 1st gen 16 gb wifi to target. 15 mins later i walked out with an ipad air 16 gb wifi (paid 300$). pretty good deal given that i hadn't used the ipad in a year.

I heard about this a few days ago and stopped at a local Target yesterday. Two people were in line waiting to trade in their iPads. Once the word spreads, I don't think Target will have much stock left. It's a great deal. I'm trading up my wife's 1st gen today.

Why are they doing this? Where do all these used iPads end up?

I asked the tech when I traded in my 32GB 3G first-gen yesterday. He wasn't sure, but he thinks they go back to Apple. I think Apple is hoping most people will buy new iPads with them -- and Target seems to be trying to get people to do that, judging from the comments I've seen. If one store gives you grief over this, though, leave and go to another one. You can find a tech who won't give you this hassle if you keep at it.

I didn't have to -- like someone else said, you can buy iTunes gift cards with the card they give you, if you want to. I wanted to buy a new Airport Express, but they don't have Apple Store cards, and for some crazy reason, App Store cards don't work in Apple Stores for physical merchandise (it's dumb).

So I left with $200 in App Store cards for $180. Dusty iPad I wasn't using anymore being converted to $200 in credit for software for my new 11" Air -- that's not a bad deal.

I am in Missouri.

Bait and switch: classic case

I went to two Seattle stores yesterday. They both insisted that to get the $200 trade-in value, it had to be an immediate in-store purchase of inventory on-hand, and (of course) neither store had the new iPad Air. They wouldn't issue just the gift card; said it was "store policy". When I asked them if they felt that was consistent with what Target had posted online, they told me they didn't know (and obviously didn't care): it was STORE POLICY.

So in essence, they're getting you in the store ("offer good for a limited time only!": a classic line), with the product unavailable that you want, and hoping to get you to buy something else, to clear out their old inventory. Definition of bait and switch. Not impressed, Target.

I told the guy that the campaign was massively misleading, and that he should take down the prominent display advertising the program as "get $200 for any iPad!"
