This sounded tempting to trade in my iPad 3, but not if it just meets the $200 minimum. Anyone able to confirm that? Their online quote is $190, so that means only $200 at the store possibly.

200$ for a first gen?
I might just buy a cheap one on epay and get the 200 from target.

As others have said, this ends on Saturday, so getting one from an online source likely isn't going to make it to you in time.

In other news - there are no <$200 iPads on Craigslist at the moment... (The guy in front of me at Target on the first day was turning in FOUR of them - I imagine all from Craigslist.)

I tried to trade in my first gen iPad at my local Target but it appears that most, if not all, stores in the San Jose area are out of the trade-in cards. One Target put me on a waiting list (I'm #46) while the other two Targets I visited says to check with them on Friday to see if they got any more cards in. While I would love to trade in my iPad for $200, Best Buy is willing to give me $95.
That would be the most ridiculous reason for not doing it. Print the freaking amount and barcode/number on a credit receipt and be done with it if the cards are not available. Justifying not doing this for tons of people because the cards are not there is just not right.

If you are not selling a ipad 1 (16-32gb) or a really bad shape ipad2 (16gb) this is not the deal for you. You will get a lot more off craigslist or ebay.

I just sold a ipad 3 for 300 pretty easily and it was a bit scuffed / dented.

Since Target is sold out (locally and online) of the Air I want, does anyone know of a surefire way to convert the gift card to cash so I can buy from Apple?

Is it AT LEAST $200?

WHat about a 64GB cellular iPad 3? I'm looking to upgrade to the new iPad Air.

I brought my iPad 3 64GB LTE into a Target here in Orange County California and they said they'd give me $235.00 credit for it. :( So, it's a much better deal (for consumers) to trade a 1st gen iPad for the $200.00

I'll trade my wife's 1st gen iPad and give her my iPad 3. I'll probably just keep the store credit until the iPad Mini 2 comes out then make up my mind between the Mini 2 and the Air.

The only thing I can think of (and also read here) is to try and use the $200 credit to buy a $200 Visa Gift Card. I'll try that later tonight and report back.

It's not as good as you think on eBay. 10% final value fee, 3% PayPal fee on the item+shipping total. Plus there's an insertion fee if you want to set a reserve. Take the $200.

Good points.

So if you sell for $250, free shipping, you actually walk away with

(250 - $25 - $7.50 = )

$217.50.

And maybe it costs you $10 to ship it.

So at that price you're only $7.50 ahead of the Target gift card price.

Just have to decide if it's worth it to you. I'll note I've seen a good number of 32 GB iPads on e-bay go for $275 or more. And keep in mind you can use that money for anything, not just stuff from target.

I've got a 32GB iPad 1 that I'm going to trade in. Does anyone know if the Target $200 store credit has an expiration date? Edit: Sorry, found my expiration answer here.

Redwood City, CA Target had only 30 cards on Thursday. There was a sign in list and I was #10 at 11:10am. The mobile area opened at 11:30 and I was out of there by 12:05. John was the only guy working on these trade ins. He was super nice and efficient.
- only 2 trade ins per person, but he is willing to make an exception if you are not a "reseller". Some lady had 4 and he accepted them. One guy had 14, but was only given 2 cards based on other people in line.
- you do not need to purchase an iPad to get the gift card.
- my 1st gen iPad was worth $65 without the promotion.

Rumors are there will be many more cards Friday and Saturday available. My recommendation, get there well before 11:30am and sign the list and come back to pick up the card.

Good luck.

So what happens to the trade in's? Do they use them for spare parts, sell them on to apple?

Back in the day when you traded in really old video games (for systems that my employer no longer sold games for) and got some measley trade-in credit for them, the games apparently were destined for downscale, non-US markets like Eastern Europe.

Target was gonna give us only like $205 for my wifes iPad2 32gb w/3g, so instead we swapped with a good friend of ours.

They had a 16gb iPad1 WiFi.

So our friends got a free upgrade, it was nice to help them out, as they don't have a lot of disposable income currently as they have 2 daughters in college.

We got a $200 Target gift card this afternoon for the iPad1.

We haven't decided on a mini or an air quite yet.

iPad 3rd generation w/ retina screen?

Hello everyone...I've wanted to get an iPad mini w/ retina (once it's available)...so do you think it would be a good idea to trade-in my iPad 3rd generation w/ retina screen for $200?

I would definitely like to know if you succeed. I guess the other option is to purchase a $200 item and return it for a refund, which hopefully would be a cash refund instead of another Target gift card.

I am tempted to do this, as it will significantly ease the pain of an $830 purchase, but on the other hand I really like to hold on to my old gadgets. The 1st gen iPad is a piece of tech history. I have computers from the 80s and even the first discman, as well as many other gadgets acquired over the years.

Traded in iPad (first gen, 32GB) in Roswell, GA

I got a $200 gift card. Expires 01/22, so that is definitely not an issue. No forced purchase. I heard the customer service guy say, to another customer, that the card was good only in the store. But the back of the "Electronics Trade-In Card" says it is redeemable in the store and at target.com. So, whatever. I have an iPad 3 already and was going to just go for a 16gb mini @ $299. Since it's a secondary device, and for watching netflix in bed, that is a great deal! I hope they get more in stock tomorrow as they were out. :(

Edit: The card says it actually never expires. After the 01/22 date you need to contact them for a replacement. Heh. No worries.

I posted earlier that I converted my trade in gift card to iTunes gift cards. My brother converted his to an Amazon gift card. I think any type of gift card Target sells would be OK.

Worked in Tucson

Worked just fine in Tucson at the Oro Valley store. Easy process--took 5 minutes, though I had to wait for my iPad 1 to charge enough so that the employee could get the serial number. Hadn't been used or charged in months...

The other night I traded in a 16GB iPad 3 WiFi and got the Electronics Gift Card. The person in the store said it could only be used in the Electonics Department, or at the Mobility Kiosk, and only in that store. (Orlando, Millenia). There would be no issue with waiting for the iPad Mini Retina and the funds on the card never expire. Reading the very very small print on the paperwork he gave me it does state that the card can be used for products and services at any Target store or Target.com. It did not state any restrictions on the departments or merchandise and the the card does state Electronics Trade In Gift Card. My plan was to save it anyway for an iPad mini with Retina display, so we will see.

For those of you who thought I got a bad deal, I see it was a good deal since I already have an iPad 4 with 64GB with WiFi and Cellular which I use as my primary iPad device. I also own an iPad mini with 64GB and just WiFi. This iPad 3 with 16GB was a prize that I had won at work and it didn't cost me anything at all. After getting the iPad 4 it was boxed back up and sat in the closet for months. I see it as a good deal because I got a $200 profit on it and a little extra space in the closet.

do you guys return the box, charger, cable? Or they give you the gift card by just trading in the naked iPad?

Just the iPad.

I walked in the downtown Seattle store near my office during lunch time with my iPad. The lady told me I did not need anything else, just the iPad. She could not do anything though since she said the store ran out of the gift cards. She only took my name and my number saying she would call. I have no idea if they will call in in a day, in a week or in a year. This reminds me of how much I dislike Target. If they ever call, I would bring the box and the charger just in case, but only if they ask for them. :)

My girlfriend has an engraved 16gb wifi ipad. Think I should make her jump on this because of the resale of the engraved one?

They run out of Gift at many locations. and out of iPad airs as well

They have run out of Gift cards at many locations. and out of iPad airs as well. spent 3 hours and 20 twenty bucks driving around . still no luck . The company doing this is not part of target they rent space . brightspot mobile . I would say do not waste your time . as for the target folks they were less than helpful.

Earlier this week, we shared a trade-in promotion from Target, which generated tremendous interest. Target is offering $200 for any iPad, including the original 1st generation models. Outside of the promotion, Target normally offers only $65 for a 16 GB Wi-Fi original iPad, which makes the $200 gift card a great deal.

Target's trade-in promotion is still going on, ending on Saturday, November 9, leaving two days to complete potential trade-ins. We've received some mixed reports about the success of the trade-ins. Trade-ins can only be done in-store to receive the special offer, as original iPad trade-ins online are still listed with a $65 value.

While Target has altered the wording on its original offer to suggest consumers trading in iPads should use the funds to purchase an iPad Air or iPad mini, many customers are still receiving $200 gift cards with no strings attached. Target's new promotional wording is below:According to our forums and emails we've received, Target has had some difficulty processing all of the trade-ins, and some Target stores seem to be unfamiliar with the details of the promotion. While some customers have had no issues trading in their iPads, others have faced long lines due to each store only having a few employees in the Mobile department, or been turned away entirely.

For most, the process is quick and simple. A Target employee will type in the model number, check to make sure the buttons are functional and that the screen isn't cracked, then enter a license number before handing over the gift card.

While some Target locations have insisted that the $200 trade-in value must be used for an iPad purchase, forum members have been able to circumvent this by claiming to wait for a Retina iPad mini or by visiting another Target location that did not implement the same restrictions.
