Also remember that states laws on gift cards regardless of what there issued for vary. Like California there is no expiration date for gift cards

I just traded in a 16gig 3G iPad 1 in Bridgewater NJ and got a nice unrestricted $200 gift card. As soon as the guy saw me he said "iPad?". Said they're getting lots and lots of them coming in.

We actually hadn't been planning on getting rid of that iPad, but it's such a good deal we couldn't resist. Will consider future purchase of a mini (either retina or otherwise) to complement our existing iPad 3.

Sucks that my iPad 2 has a few cracks on the bezel... otherwise I'd do this.

Try anyways. The lady that did mine didn't even look at it other than to see that it powered on and to get the model number. Worst that can happen is they will say no.

----------

Target.com says some of the new iPads are only sold online, not in stores. (I know you have to go to a store in person to get the $200 card.)

Question 1: Once you have the $200 gift card, can you use it online at Target.com? Or are you limited to spending it on models carried in physical stores?

The lady told me the cards were in store only...that said guess you can add something to an online shopping cart, plug your gift card number in and see if it will take it.

Two things:

1. At first you could get the same deal online at http://www.targettradeinprogram.com by putting in the code NOVIPAD200 but that appears to be gone - YMMV

2. If they insist you use your gift card toward a new iPad, here's what I did: buy the cheapest one they have (I traded in two 1st gen iPads for $400, so got a $399 iPad 2), then walk it over to customer service and return it. In my case they gave me a $400 (+ tax) gift card with no restrictions.

In my Target they said exactly the opposite, said it was good in-store or online.

Anyone know if there's a limit? I see several iPad 1's on Craigslist for around 100 that I might buy up and turn in for a cheap upgrade.

In another thread here on the same subject, people were saying they traded in 4 iPads.

I used my trade in card online. You have to register the card first, and then when you are checking out you have to enter it as a credit card. It's not easy , but will work online.

I bought iTunes gift cards which were on sale at 10% off.

There is a phone number on the back of the card to call if you are having trouble using it on line.

What is Target going to do with all those iPads?

What is Target going to do with all those iPads?

Will they refurb. and resell them at a markup. Who would pay over $200 for a used Gen 1 iPad. So Target intends to sell them at a loss? Will they give them to sculls. I hope they don't toss them all in a land fill.

The guy told me that they're working with some existing trade-in company, although I didn't catch the name.

And so Target is handing them off, not doing anything themselves (assuming the info I received was accurate).

I turned mine in last night in a San Antonio store with no hassle. 200 gift card useable for anything in the store. I even checked it on the way out by buying something for my son.

Target is doing nothing with them. They hired a third party to take them all and either recycle them or sell them overseas to emerging market that are just now getting smart phones like India where the tablet and smartphone markets are in their infancy. A lot of these market are using 3G cell networks as their cheap reliable and easy to setup

Our Target - in Wisco - said it could be used towards ANY apple product or accessory. Traded in our 1st Gen iPad for a new 5S iPhone and paid NOTHING :) Still have a couple bucks left over for a case or something

Went to my local Target on 116th Street in NY. They said they were out of gift cards... therefore couldn't process the return. Took down name and number and said they would call once/if they got new cards in. Honestly... sounded like a lot of BS.

Duplicate Story Thread

I'm not sure why there is a second copy of this story.

There are a lot of answers here, but I will summarize my experience.

The Mobility Store is simply the computer kiosk in the Electronics department where they sell phones. Only they can do it for you. The original post from Target didn't say you had to use it towards a new iPad.

I had no problem trading in my first generation iPad and getting an Electronics Trade In Gift Card. They did not require me to purchase a new iPad. Others have been told you could use it on anything in the store or that you could only use that card in the Electronics department to check out.

Some have been told that since the iPad they wanted to upgrade to was not in stock, and they were not allowed to trade theirs in. Trying different stores has helped. Your milage may very, good luck.

Awesome deal, I saw at least 6 people turn in original iPads, I had to turn in my 2 since I gave my original away. I picked up a mini for $75 after a $200 and $25 gift card.

Edit, they almost didn't let me trade in because my button was sticking a bit. They also would not let me take a rain check on the trade-in had to buy in stock items only. The also said it was a third party company that did the trade-in program.

Boise, Idaho, Milwaukee Street store.
Kiosk is open 1400-2000 only.
Clerk powered up my first generation iPad, looked at it, got the model number from Settings, filled out a form on the kiosk's computer, printed the form, had me sign a receipt and handed me an unrestricted Target gift card for $200. No strings attached. Took about 10 minutes, mostly waiting for the printer.

The young lady was surprised about the reported hassles at some stores but she said the contractor handling the deal probably operates differently in larger markets.

This is going to come as a bit of a disappointment to a friend who was waffling on my offer to sell him my old iPad for $100. Snooze/lose/etc.

The Answer

Why are they doing this? Where do all these used iPads end up?

I talked to the guy about this... Its all run by a separate company (not target) and they break the iPads down into parts. Notice all the shops popping up that will fix your iPads? If you've ever been to one they are expensive. They will probably get $400+ in parts / service out of it.

:(

I just went to a downtown Seattle store a few mins ago. The lady took my name and phone number and said they would call when they had gift cards. iPad Air is out of stock. I am not impressed.

Hm.... I was going to hang on to my original iPad, but $200 is too good to pass up.

Here in Sacramento their are no iPad airs in stock in the target stores in the area. You could not buy a new iPad air even if you wanted to. The closest iPad I could find was in The Bay Area and that was a 16gb wifi air iPad. Since none are available online I don't see how they could require you to use the gift card to buy a new iPad. Let alone put an expiration date on the gift card. If there are none available and as far as I am aware there is no shortage of them.

Has anyone been able to actually buy an iPad air from target?
