Roku's interface and user experience is fairly nice. Far better remote than the Apple TV. Apple should just license them AirPlay.

Very smart move on Apple to link up with the TV manufacturers and TCL will want to jump on board ASAP as it will cost them some sales. Apple TV will still be the better way to watch TV and this may actually drive sales of that as folks who care about better privacy and much smoother way to watch than the manufacturers App will prefer Apple TV.

Most consumers care about price. If a picture is good enough, and most are, then the cheapest set will do; so there is no incentive for manufacturers to focus on privacy, especially since it would cost them money.

That is too bad, as what you were probably seeing was poor content and an improperly adjusted device. If the TCL set had Dolby Vision, it is substantially better than the HDR 10 (and the barely supported HDR 10+) in the Samsung device.
Well, I looked at multiple. The viewing angles just aren't right on that VA display on the TCL. Colors looked wack on all of them. I checked out some of the settings too. I think the consensus is that Samsung displays (on the same class of TV) are generally better.

Not for nothing, but the last rental car I got was a Hyundai and I was quite impressed. It drove better than some of doggy Fords I've gotten recently.

Fords,GM,Dodge are all cheap stuff too. They might look good when new but are cheap and don’t last.

I think Apple should focus on reoccurring items like Apple TV News or something that can generate reoccurring visitors watching.

Cheap stuff. I would never buy a TCL display. It’s like buying a Hyundai.

Not to de-rail the thread, but WOW. I can't believe some people still have this perception of Hyundai!! (I hear the same about Kia).

Do some research, talk to people who know cars, or read articles written by professional auto journalists. Hyundai makes fantastic cars, with great reliability. They are a behemoth of a company, manufacturing everything from cars, to industrial machinery, to trucks, buses, etc. They know how to build machines.

I've bought 3, including a 2019 Tucson for my wife just last week, and the most recent Genesis right before it spun off to its own luxury brand, now sold as the G80.) I leased it. I'm the type of person who gets tired of things easily and likes change, always wanting to try something new. Now the lease is almost up and I'm seriously considering getting the same car again, 2019 model year,- something I would normally never do. Its THAT good!

And yes, I've driven all the other cars, including MB, BMW, Audi (was very closely looking at the A4 before buying the Genesis, but the Audi lacked features my Genesis had for less money, and a much better warranty as WELL AS reliability). The auto industry is changing. Gone are the days when in order to get a nice luxurious car with all the latest options, and high quality interiors you had to look to European models. There's just less and less reason to buy those premium brands anymore.

Yawn. I honestly couldn't care less what's installed on a TV because I'm going to bypass all of it and plug the inputs of my choice (currently Apple TV, a blu-ray player and a PS4) through the HDMI and never touch the crapware the thing comes with. I'd rather my purchase dollar go toward the quality of the display instead. WAY easier to just plug in new devices from time to time as they're upgraded than buy a new TV.
You probably do speak for most Apple customers (including me) but not the majority of streaming TV viewers. People expect cheap 4K and do not want to pay additional money for setup boxes that add little additional value for them. It appears that overnight, Apple has turned off their hardware valve and opened up their services valve to full stream ahead. (pun intended)

Your anecdote reminds me of my father a little. He has driven and owned MB most of his life (he still owns a $110,000 MB but never drives it) but every since he tried my Prius a decade ago, he's only bought Toyota vehicles.

not gonna lie i was about to get a TCL 4k tv for my sister for xmas but when i went to bestbuy and saw it next to a samsung 4k panel for the same price... it was no question. samsung >>>>>>

You made the wrong call, actually. Samsung does make some good TVs, but the stuff they make in TCL's price range is trash. (Check Rtings, Wirecutter, et cetera for the numbers) Low picture quality, bad HDR implementation (i.e. it can receive HDR signal but not actually reproduce it, poor software support, and so on.

Wouldn't you just have to attach an Apple TV to it to get the functionality that you want ?
I have one right now but having built in airplay sounds much better (which is 99% of what I use my AppleTV for, plus I have the 4th Gen one which only does 1080p, so i would need to add the cost of a new AppleTV to my purchase)

researched it for 3 weeks before pulling the trigger. Had my sights set on the TCL. I really did. I had it in my cart on Amazon and everything. Went to BBY, and saw TCL quality vs Samsung. Thought it was a fluke. Messed with settings. Went to the 6 series TCL just to be sure. Even that was not nearly as good. Dunno. I mean, in a vacuum, I'm sure TCL looks good. But next to a vibrant and clear (and not patchy) Samsung display, it looks bad.

I used to work for a dealer who supplied body shops with Hyundai parts. Either they make you fail a driving test before you can buy one, or they are made out of cotton candy. I used to drop off enough parts to build an entire car.

I can see the reason why their commitment with Roku because of Roku OS that made their smartTV great. Samsung, LG and other their TV's are awesome better picture but their software are horrible laggy and slow, although lately has been improved but still no match to Roku OS. Obviously tvOS is exclusive to Apple but I'm glad more SmartTV's are supporting Airplay 2 the closest AppleTV experience for a non-Apple product.

I'm pretty sure the features were not comparable. Basically you were comparing apples to oranges.

Very comparable. Specs were very similar. Both VA panels. Same price, though the Samsung was 50" and TCL 55" (but I checked TCL's 49/50 inch model too). Colors looked worse on TCL and the viewing angle on the TCL was horrendous. Samsung's wasn't heaps better but it was noticeably so. They're the same class of TV. Both around the 400$ mark.
